Chapter 406 Beat You to Death
Henry and Hailey locked eyes for a couple of seconds before Hailey suddenly threw her arms around him. She turned to Dorothy and said, "We're together now. Go ahead, hit us. We messed up, so hit us if it makes you feel better!"
Hailey then closed her eyes, snuggling into Henry's chest, bracing herself for whatever was coming.
Henry, looking down at Hailey, tightened his grip around her and closed his eyes too.
Susan, watching them hug, felt a pang of envy. They were facing the storm together. Sure, their timing sucked, but Henry and Dorothy's marriage had its own issues. Suddenly, Susan got it—Henry had found his true love, and Hailey didn't seem so bad. Actually, she even admired her a bit.
To Dorothy, though, this was a slap in the face. No way was she gonna let this slide.
Dorothy raised her purse and yelled, "Oh, you wanna get hit together? Fine, I'll beat you both to a pulp, you filthy cheaters!"
She swung her purse, smacking Henry and Hailey in the head and face, while the crowd egged her on.
James chimed in, "Yeah, beat 'em! Beat these cheaters to death!"
Amanda, in James's arms, saw her dad getting hit and started crying, "Don't hit my Daddy!"
Susan felt a knot in her stomach. She knew she couldn't stop this mess. She stepped forward and took Amanda from James.
Susan carried Amanda through the crowd and sat on a bench in the hallway.
Amanda was shaking like a leaf. Susan patted her back, holding her close, and whispered, "Amanda, don't be scared. Mommy's just teaching Daddy a lesson; she won't really hurt him..."
Amanda slowly stopped trembling under Susan's soothing words.
Susan was fuming at Dorothy's actions. Every time there was drama, she'd drag Amanda into it, scaring the poor kid. Hailey was right—Dorothy wasn't fit to be a mom!
After a while, Dorothy got tired of swinging her purse.
James then stepped up and punched Henry a couple of times, then slapped Hailey around.
In no time, Henry and Hailey were a mess, all bruised and battered.
Someone called the cops, and a few officers showed up, making James and Dorothy back off.
"What's going on here? You beat them up like this; you're coming with us to the station to make a statement," said a cop.
James quickly jumped in, "Officer, that's my daughter, that's my son-in-law, and that woman is the mistress. They're having an affair, and we had to teach them a lesson. You gotta understand they're filthy cheaters!"
"No matter the reason, beating them up like that is a no-go!" The cop pointed at the bruised and bloodied Henry and Hailey.
Catherine quickly jumped in, "Officer, my daughter just lost it. She promises it won't happen again. Can you cut her some slack this time?"
"Enough chit-chat. We're just doing our job. Come with us," the cop said, then hauled James and Dorothy away.
Susan and Catherine naturally took Amanda along. On the way, James kept cursing, while Dorothy, looking dazed, stared daggers at Henry and Hailey.
By the time they got to the police station, it was already dark.
Soon, Henry's parents showed up. After talking with Henry, they took Amanda, saying it was best for them to look after her given the mess.
Catherine and Susan couldn't argue; it was Dorothy's call since she was Amanda's mom.
This time, Dorothy agreed to let Henry's parents take Amanda, realizing that using Amanda to threaten Henry was a dead end.
Soon, James, Dorothy, Henry, and Hailey finished giving their statements.
The cop came out and said, "James, Dorothy, you caused minor injuries to Henry and Hailey. See if you can settle this. If not, you're looking at half a month in detention!"
Dorothy didn't react, but James shouted, "Is there no justice? These filthy cheaters are having an affair, and we get detained? No way, we want a lawyer!"
"We're just doing our job, not scared of you getting a lawyer," the cop said and walked off.
"Think I'm scared of you?" James muttered, pointing at the cop's back once they were out of earshot.
Susan was fuming at James; he was just making things worse.
Catherine spoke up, "Henry, you wronged our Dorothy. You're educated people; making a big scene won't help your reputation. Why not just let it go?"
Catherine didn't want Dorothy to go to jail. Since Dorothy wasn't talking, Susan couldn't say anything, and James was spouting nonsense, she had to step up.
Before Henry could speak, Hailey said, "We were publicly humiliated and beaten. What reputation do we have left?"
Catherine swallowed and said, "After all, you are the mistress, Hailey. Making a big scene won't be good for you."
"I'm not afraid of it now. Anyway, I won't marry anyone but Henry in this life. Reputation doesn't matter to me anymore," Hailey said, clutching Henry's arm and looking up at him.
Henry glanced at Hailey, then said to Catherine, "Mom, it depends on Dorothy."
Catherine was a bit confused and turned to look at Dorothy, who was sitting silently on the bench.
Dorothy coldly stared at Henry and said, "Henry, you want to force me to divorce, right? I'm telling you, no way!"
With that, Dorothy stood up to leave.
"Dorothy, stop right there!" Catherine shouted at her.
