Chapter 237 With Me Here, You Don't Need to Worry

"What's this?" George frowned at the envelope Susan handed him.

Susan smiled. "It's the $10,000 you lent me. I've saved enough to pay you back!"

George's face darkened. "What do you mean by this?"

Susan replied, "I just saved enough to pay you back."

George grabbed the envelope, looking hurt. "Do you think I'm someone who takes advantage of others?"

Susan was puzzled. "What? No, I don't mean that."

"When I lent you the money, I had no strings attached. My proposal a few days ago was sincere. If you don't want to, I won't force you. I know you're tight on money, and now you're paying me back. Are you afraid I'll pressure you into a relationship?" George suggested.

Susan finally understood. George thought she was repaying him to avoid feeling pressured into a relationship. Conflicted and burdened with guilt, she struggled to find the right words to express her true feelings.

"George, I didn't mean that. I never thought that way," Susan attempted to clarify.

Without waiting for an explanation, George accepted the envelope, stating, "No need to explain. I'll take the money. I don't want you to feel uneasy. I'm leaving." With that, he turned on his heel and exited through the door

"George," Susan called softly, but he didn't turn back. He stepped out and closed the door behind him.

After he left, Susan felt regret. She sat on the sofa, holding her head, feeling guilty.

In the following days, George didn't show up, not even to see Spring.

Susan felt conflicted but didn't know how to reconcile with him. She feared he wouldn't believe her explanation.

She knew she had hurt George's self-esteem. She hoped time would heal things. Maybe in a few days, George would be fine. He wasn't a vengeful person.

Winter was getting colder, and Susan stayed busy with work and her online store.

Her online store's business had picked up. To expand her inventory, Susan went to a jewelry factory in the suburbs over the weekend.

The factory had a wide variety of styles and good quality products. Buying directly from the factory would be cheaper, so Susan wanted to stock up and sell them slowly.

It took over two hours by bus from Maple Valley to the factory. The round trip, plus picking out goods, would take all day. So, Susan couldn't nurse Spring at noon. Luckily, Spring was ten months old and could eat solid food.

In the afternoon, Susan picked out two boxes of goods. Just after paying, her phone rang urgently. It was Serenity on the line, likely inquiring about Susan's return time.

"Serenity, I'll be back shortly..." Susan started to say, but before she could finish, Serenity interrupted in a panic, "Ms. Wilson, Spring has a high fever, nearly 104 degrees! She looks really unwell. I'm terrified she might have a seizure!"

Susan felt a chill down her spine. "How did she get a fever so sudden? She was fine when I left! 104 is really high; she could have a seizure. Get her to the hospital now!" she instructed.

"I've never been to a hospital. I don't know what to do," Serenity replied as her voice was shaky.

Serenity was from a remote area and had never been to a big hospital. Susan was at a loss.

"Ms. Wilson, when can you get back?" Serenity asked.

"It'll take me at least two hours. Hold on, I'll see if George can take you to the hospital," Susan informed Serenity before ending the call.

George was the first person who came to mind in this emergency. Knowing she had no one else to rely on, Susan promptly dialed George's number.

"Hello?" he answered after a few rings.

"George, where are you? Do you have time?" Susan's voice was frantic.

A high fever in a child could cause seizures, which could be very serious.

"What happened?" George stood up from his desk, his voice tense.

"It's Spring. She has a fever of 104, but I'm in the suburbs and can't get back for at least two hours," Susan said, tears streaming down her face.

Since having Spring, Susan often felt helpless. Spring was her everything.

"Don't worry, I'll go right away and take Spring to the hospital. We'll meet there!" George said, grabbing his car keys and rushing out.

Susan could hear George's footsteps. She knew he would keep his word. He was probably already on his way.

"George, thank you!" Susan's emotions were all over the place. She didn't know how to express her gratitude.

Despite recent tension, George came to her aid without hesitation. Susan felt a mix of appreciation and guilt.George smiled. "With me here, you don't need to worry. Be safe on your way back. I’m getting into the elevator, bye!"
