Chapter 336 Taken Away
Since then, Susan's been busting her butt at the company, juggling Spring at home, doing laundry, cooking, and running her online store whenever she could squeeze in a minute. Her life was crazy busy, like, no time to even breathe. Every night, after wrapping up everything, her back would be killing her, but seeing Spring snoozing peacefully always made her smile.
Only Susan knew why she kept herself so swamped, leaving zero time to chill. She just didn’t want her mind to wander 'cause, honestly, letting her thoughts drift was way worse than staying busy.
The budget proposal for Skyreach Group was cruising along. In just over a week, it’d be done in another three to five days.
During this time, Elliott was being a total angel, not giving Susan any grief, and working his butt off. Even Fiona was being surprisingly chill, not only not causing trouble but also being super helpful with work stuff.
One morning, as soon as Susan plopped down at her desk, Fiona rushed in from outside.
"Susan, we’ve got a problem. Elliott had acute appendicitis last night and had surgery. He’s on a week’s leave and won’t be back for a week," Fiona blurted out, looking all frazzled.
Hearing this, Susan frowned and said, "But the Skyreach Group project is due next Monday. I can’t finish it alone in three days."
Fiona thought for a sec and said, "Then you’ll have to pull some overtime this weekend. I’ve got a business trip early tomorrow, and everyone else is swamped with their own stuff. I really can’t spare anyone to help you. Plus, others aren’t familiar with this project, and it’d take them a day or two to catch up. So even if I could spare someone, it wouldn’t be much help. It’s better if you just push through."
Fiona used her best negotiating tone and went on for a while. Faced with work, Susan never backed down, so she nodded and said, "I’ll do my best to get it done."
"I knew you wouldn’t let me down. Thanks for your hard work." Fiona nodded, looking satisfied, and then headed back to her office.
It was the weekend, so Susan hit up Mary and asked her to watch Hayden and Spring for the next few days. She had to grind non-stop for the next few days.
That midnight, Susan was still grinding away under the desk lamp.
Isabella got up in the middle of the night to hit the bathroom and saw Susan totally focused. She couldn’t help but gripe, "Do you really need to work this hard?"
"I gotta use the weekend to finish this project. It’s due on Monday," Susan said without even looking up.
Seeing this, Isabella frowned and said, "It’s a bummer I have to go on a field assignment early tomorrow. Otherwise, I’d help you."
"Don’t be silly. You’re not familiar with this project and have no leads. Go to sleep," Susan said, patting Isabella’s hand.
Isabella turned and scratched her head, then suddenly turned back and said, "Do you think Elliott is deliberately giving you a hard time?"
"What do you mean?" Susan looked up.
"He just happened to get appendicitis at the most critical moment. I feel like something’s fishy!" Isabella said.
Susan thought for a sec and felt something was off, but she couldn't quite put her finger on it. With Fiona jetting off on a business trip tomorrow, she had no choice but to finish this project, no matter what.
So, Susan said, "No point in overthinking it now. Elliott's already on leave. If I can't submit the project on Monday, it's all on me. The main thing now is to figure out how to get this done."
With that, Susan got back to work.
"I told you not to stick around at Pioneer Accounting Firm, but you wouldn't listen. You're just asking for trouble," Isabella muttered, yawning before heading back to bed.
After two days and three nights of non-stop grinding, Susan finally wrapped up the budget proposal three hours before work on Monday.
By the time she dragged herself into the office Monday morning, she was beyond exhausted.
In the past few days, she’d barely slept less than three hours a night, even timing her meals and bathroom breaks. Finally, she managed to finish the work on time.
Sitting in front of her computer, Susan turned it on, but it just showed a bunch of garbled text. After several attempts to restart, it still wouldn't work. She started to panic because the first half of the budget proposal was on that computer, and she needed to combine it with the second half for printing.
Just then, Fiona walked in with her bag. Seeing Susan, she immediately headed over to her desk.
"Susan, is the Skyreach Group budget proposal done?" Fiona asked, sounding urgent.
"Yeah," Susan nodded.
Hearing this, Fiona beamed and said, "Awesome! I knew you wouldn't let me down. If this goes through smoothly, I'll talk to Linda about getting you a raise. This project was urgent, the workload was heavy, and with Elliott's appendicitis, you've really pulled through!"
At that moment, Fiona's eyes met Susan's.
Susan, however, stood up anxiously and said, "Fiona, my computer suddenly won't turn on. Can you get someone to fix it ASAP? The first half of the budget proposal is still in there, and I can't print it without it!"
Hearing this, Fiona also got anxious and immediately called the maintenance department.
Soon, the tech guys came to fix it. Luckily, it wasn't a big deal and was sorted out in half an hour.
Once it was fixed, Susan quickly copied the files and handed them to the printing department to get them printed.
By noon, Susan finally placed the Skyreach Group budget proposal on Fiona's desk and let out a huge sigh of relief.
To her surprise, Fiona was super considerate this time and gave her a half day off, telling her to go home and rest in the afternoon.
Susan was so wiped out that she didn't think twice and went straight home to crash.
When she opened her eyes again, it was already the next morning.
She had slept for about seventeen hours, completely losing track of time.
Susan walked to the mirror and saw that her dark circles had lightened up a bit. She freshened up, threw on a white professional suit, and strutted to work in her high heels.
As soon as she walked into the office, she felt something was off. Her colleagues were whispering and gossiping about something.
Puzzled, Susan sat down at her desk. Suddenly, two men in police uniforms walked in.
"Are you Susan?" The two men walked straight up to her.
"Yeah," Susan nodded, totally confused.
