Chapter 419 Yesterday Was His Birthday
"What?" Susan gawked at Isabella.
Isabella just grinned and asked, "Is it true that women hit their prime in their thirties and forties?"
"How... how would I know?" Susan's face turned beet red, and she stammered a bit.
She knew Isabella was hinting at something. She was a thirty-year-old woman with a long-term partner.
Seeing Susan blush, Isabella smirked. "If you don't know, who would? You haven't been looking too hot lately, probably 'cause you're unsatisfied. You should patch things up with Seb quick, or you'll drive yourself nuts!"
"You're such a pain!" Susan glanced at her desk, grabbed her mouse pad, and chucked it at Isabella.
Isabella quickly ducked out and shut the door, and the mouse pad hit the door and fell to the ground.
After Isabella left, Susan felt bored. She sat in her chair, trying to focus on work, but her mind kept drifting.
That evening, Susan left work early to pick up Hayden from school.
"Mommy, how come you have time to pick me up today?" Hayden held Susan's hand, looking super happy.
As they walked, Susan looked down at Hayden and smiled. "I missed you today, so I came to pick you up."
"Can you pick me up from school every day from now on?" Hayden suddenly asked, blinking up at Susan.
Hearing this, Susan felt a bit troubled. "Well, I promise that as long as I have time, I'll come to pick you up, okay?"
"Okay." Hayden nodded happily.
Then Hayden suddenly said, "Mommy, let's hurry home and eat cake!"
"You want cake? Alright, I'll buy some from the bakery up ahead," Susan said with a smile.
But Hayden shook his head. "No need to buy. Daddy brought home a big birthday cake last night."
Hearing this, Susan stopped in her tracks and asked in confusion, "Birthday cake? Whose birthday is it?"
'Seb bought a birthday cake? Is it someone's birthday at home? Hayden's birthday is in winter, Spring's is in spring, and mine is in summer. Now it's late autumn. Could it be Mary or Kathy's birthday?' Susan thought.
"Mommy, don't you know? Yesterday was Daddy's birthday!" Hayden said, looking puzzled.
Susan was taken aback by this!
She really didn't know when Seb's birthday was. They had been apart so much over the years that they never celebrated each other's birthdays.
Hayden continued, "Mommy, last night we waited for you with Daddy, but Spring and I fell asleep waiting, so we didn't get to eat the birthday cake. Daddy said we had to wait for you to come home to cut the cake!"
Susan looked down at Hayden's upset face, gently touched his cheek, and felt a mix of emotions.
He waited for her at home last night? He was waiting for her to celebrate his birthday? Thinking of this, Susan felt a bit sad.
How could she have known it was his birthday yesterday? Maybe they lacked communication, or maybe she wasn't attentive enough?
But even if she were attentive, even if they communicated, they were destined not to be together. Why add to the sadness?
"Mommy, shouldn't you get Daddy a belated birthday gift?" Hayden suddenly asked, looking at Susan.
Hearing this, Susan felt even more complexed and said, "His birthday has already passed; let's buy it next year."
With that, she took Hayden home.
As Susan and Hayden got close to the villa, they saw a Bentley parked out front slowly start up and drive off.
"Daddy's car!" Hayden shouted, pointing at it.
Susan saw it too but wasn't sure if Seb was inside. It was around the time he'd usually get home from work, though.
"Maybe your Daddy just got home from work," Susan said.
Hayden, all excited, grabbed Susan's hand and ran towards the villa, yelling, "Daddy's home! I wanna cut the cake with Daddy!"
Susan's mind was a mess. She had no idea how to face Seb, but she followed Hayden inside anyway.
"Daddy!" Hayden let go of Susan's hand as soon as they got in and bolted towards the living room, shouting.
Susan changed her shoes and walked into the living room, just in time to see Kathy smiling as she came out of the kitchen.
"Hayden, your Daddy just left. Didn't you see him at the door?" Kathy asked, looking puzzled at Hayden and then at Susan.
Hearing this, Susan frowned.
Knowing he wasn't home, Susan then felt a wave of relief. She wasn't as tense anymore.
"We saw the car leaving but didn't see him," Susan replied.
Kathy then said, "Mr. Anderson said he needed to go to the central district. He came back to grab some clothes and then left."
"Daddy went to the central district again? I wanted him to cut the cake for me," Hayden said, looking super bummed.
Knowing he went to the central district again, Susan suddenly felt a bit breathless.
Kathy smiled and said, "I put the cake in the fridge. I'll go cut it for you."
"Okay." Hayden was all excited again.
In no time, Hayden and Spring were sitting at the dining table, each munching on a piece of cake.
Watching them eat happily, Susan smiled, but she felt a bit uneasy inside.
At that moment, Kathy said with a smile, "Ms. Wilson, last night Mr. Anderson asked me to make your favorite dishes. He waited with the kids for you for a long time, but you didn't come home."
"I... didn't know it was his birthday yesterday." Susan looked at Kathy in surprise and finally said.
He waited with the kids for her all night? He even had Kathy make her favorite dishes? Did he want to celebrate his birthday with her?
Susan was increasingly confused by Seb. He had Maya now. Shouldn't he be celebrating with Maya? Why did he leave this opportunity for her?
"Ms. Wilson, don't think I'm nagging, but Mr. Anderson responds better to kindness than to harshness. You need to be gentle with him. Mr. Anderson is actually very good to you. Honestly, I've never seen him tolerate anyone as much as he tolerates you. You just hold your pride too high. Sometimes you need to lower your tone a bit, so he has a way to back down, don't you think?" Kathy kindly advised Susan.
Susan thought to herself, 'Even if I lower my attitude, will he come back to me? He and Maya probably already have feelings for each other, or maybe they're even talking about marriage by now.'
Then Susan smiled and said, "Kathy, this cake looks good. You should have a piece too. I'm going upstairs to change."
With that, Susan turned and walked away.
