Chapter 207 Mockery

Amelia's words made Susan roll her eyes. "I don't care about your business," she said flatly.

Susan turned to leave. Being pregnant, she wanted to avoid any drama.

But Amelia blocked her path, arms crossed, smirking. "You're just jealous because you can't compete with me, right?"

"I'm not as full of myself as you," Susan shot back.

Susan couldn't fathom why women like Amelia existed. If Amelia wanted to marry rich, what did that have to do with her? Yet, Amelia had to flaunt it, oblivious to the risks she was taking.

"Hmph, Seb married you when you were pregnant, but he didn't even give you a wedding. As soon as your child died, he divorced you. Now you're just a divorced woman. But I do admire your knack for seducing men; you even snagged George. So, will he marry you, or is he just having fun? George is a top lawyer in Maple Valley. Would he marry a divorced woman like you? Better find someone who'll take you in before you end up with nothing again!" Amelia sneered, clearly enjoying Susan's misfortune.

Despite Amelia's taunts, Susan stayed calm. "No one can match your skills; you can get any man you want. But be careful, the higher you climb, the harder you fall."

"Are you cursing me?" Amelia's face twisted in anger.

Just as Amelia was about to lash out, her phone rang.

Seeing the caller ID, Amelia quickly answered, her tone softening. "Ethan, I got the stuff. I'll be back soon!"

After hanging up, Amelia glared at Susan. "We'll see about that!"

With that, Amelia strutted away, her heels clicking loudly.

Susan realized Amelia had come just to humiliate her. She smiled to herself, thinking Amelia's malice was all surface-level.

The real schemer was Amelia's mother, Sophia. Last time in Lindell Harbor, Sophia had tried to set her up with two thugs.

Just then, George walked out of the clinic.

Seeing Amelia leave, George frowned. "Did she come to see you?"

"Yeah," Susan nodded.

"What did she say?" George asked.

Susan smiled. "The usual. Bragging about her rich fiancé and mocking my situation."

George's face darkened. "What a piece of work. She should worry about herself."

"People like Amelia get blinded by their own success," Susan said, shaking her head.

"Enough about her. Just hearing about her is annoying. Let's go," George said, putting his arm around Susan as they headed home.

That evening, Serenity had made dinner but mentioned she had to leave for some family matters.

For a while, the big house was just George and Susan.

At the dinner table, as George was finishing up, Susan spoke up. "George, there's something I need to talk to you about."

"Sure, what's up?" George replied, smiling.

Susan hesitated. "The doctor says my health is good and the pregnancy is stable. I think I should make some plans. I can't stay here to have the baby. Even if I don't mind the gossip, I don't want to mess up your dating life. Don't you think?"

She used a light tone, hoping George wouldn't disagree.

George's face darkened, and he lost his appetite. "Didn't you say your mom doesn't know about your pregnancy? Where would you go?"

"I was thinking of Lindell Harbor. I know the area and could rent a small place," Susan said, smiling.

George paced the dining room, the tension thick in the air. Susan watched him, feeling anxious. George had been so kind to her, and she didn't know how to repay him if she kept accepting his help.

After a few more paces, George stopped and sat across from her. "Susan, I have an idea. Would you consider it?"

"What idea?" Susan asked, curious.

"My grandmother lives alone in a suburb near Maple Valley. It's beautiful and peaceful. She has a big house with a large yard. Why don't you stay with her?" George suggested.

Susan frowned and politely declined. "Wouldn't it be inappropriate for me to bother your grandmother?"

"You wouldn't be bothering her; you'd be helping me. My grandmother is getting old, and besides a housekeeper, she's alone. My mom passed away early, and I'm too busy to visit often. If you move in and keep her company, she'd be thrilled," George explained.

"But..." Susan hesitated.

"Even though your pregnancy is stable, complications can still happen. If my grandmother is there to look after you, I'll feel better. Think about it, Susan. If you're alone in Lindell Harbor and something happens, what will you do? You have to put your baby first," George urged.

His words hit home. Susan had nowhere to go and no one to look after her. She looked down at her slightly protruding belly and, after a moment, reluctantly agreed. "I'll stay with your grandmother for a few months, but I must come back when I'm close to giving birth."

"Deal!" George said, overjoyed. He ran to call his grandmother, Saskia Walker.

Sitting at the table, Susan was lost in thought. It felt like an invisible hand had been pushing her forward all these years, and she had no idea where she was headed.
