Chapter 470 You Are So Heartless
Seeing Todd was okay, Seb let out a big sigh of relief.
"Dad, you just had surgery. Chill with the talking," Seb said softly.
"Alright," Todd nodded.
Since Seb walked in, he hadn't even glanced at her. Susan felt all kinds of uneasy, worried he'd pin the blame on her.
"Dad needs to rest. Let's chat outside," Seb told Carol as Todd closed his eyes.
So, Seb, Carol, and Susan left the room.
Seb first asked Leon to take the staff outside to wait.
Then, Seb turned and asked, "What the heck happened? How did Dad end up getting hit by a car?"
"I..." Susan started to answer.
Carol cut in, "You should ask your lovely wife. If she hadn't come back halfway to argue with me, your dad wouldn't have chased after her, and he wouldn't have been hit by a car!"
Hearing this, Seb turned to Susan and asked sternly, "Is that true?"
Susan first nodded, then shook her head like crazy.
"Is it or isn't it?" Seb's voice was super intense now.
Seeing Susan at a loss for words, Carol smirked.
Susan didn't know how to answer Seb, but Carol's version was kinda right. She found it hard to argue, but she knew she had to clear her name. She couldn't let Carol twist the truth.
Then, Susan said, "Seb, I forgot my phone at home, so I went back to get it. I didn't expect to overhear Mom and Rylee talking. She said she was deliberately making things hard for me, wanting to tame me, afraid I wouldn't listen to her in the future and threaten her spot in the family. Hearing this, I got mad and argued with her. I..."
At this moment, Carol interrupted Susan, "See, she admits she came back to argue with me, right?"
"Why did I argue with you? Is everything my fault?" Susan couldn't help but shout at Carol.
"Look, Seb, even when you're here, she acts like this. Imagine how disrespectful she was to me this morning, and she even tried to hit me!" Carol accused.
"Why are you twisting the truth? You were the one who tried to hit me first, and I just grabbed your hand," Susan argued.
"So you pushed me down?" Carol said.
"I did push you, but you held onto the sofa and didn't fall!" Susan immediately replied.
"Even if I hit you, you shouldn't have fought back. I'm your mother-in-law. Do you have any family manners?" Carol persisted.
"I told you not to mention the words 'family manners' to me," Susan snapped back.
For a moment, Susan and Carol argued back and forth.
"Enough!" Seb shouted.
His voice was loud and commanding. Carol and Susan quickly shut up, not daring to say another word because Seb's face looked super grim, and he might blow up any second.
"This is a hospital. Don't you feel embarrassed arguing like this for others to hear?" Seb said, holding back his anger.
"I'm still an elder. I can't stand her behavior," Carol muttered, but her voice was noticeably smaller, and her tone carried a hint of grievance.
Susan stayed silent.
After a bit, Seb turned to Carol and said, "Mom, you're wiped out. Let Kathy take you home to rest. Susan and I will stay here."
Carol nodded and left with Kathy.
Once they were gone, the hallway got real quiet, just Seb and Susan left standing there.
Susan looked up and met Seb's gaze. He was frowning hard, staring right at her.
After a moment, Susan broke the silence, "Go ahead, lay into me. I know I’m partly to blame for Dad’s condition."
Honestly, Susan felt super guilty, but Carol's blaming made her want to defend herself. If Seb scolded her now, she might actually feel a bit better.
Seb stepped closer, looking down at her, and said, "I know you didn’t do it on purpose."
Hearing this, a relieved smile spread across Susan's face.
She knew he wouldn’t buy into Carol’s one-sided story. He got her; she wasn’t a bad person!
Then, Seb continued, "But I still gotta call you out. Your temper is too stubborn, and you get riled up too easily. You don’t know how to be flexible, which is why you clash with Mom. She’s an elder, and arguing with her just brings trouble on yourself, like now."
Seb’s words hit home, and Susan’s eyes filled with tears.
The next moment, he reached out and wiped the tears from her cheeks with his thumb.
"Seb, I don’t think Carol and I can live together anymore. We just can’t get along," Susan said, looking at him with sad, helpless eyes.
She knew she was putting Seb in a tough spot, but if she kept living with Carol, bigger problems might pop up.
After thinking for a moment, Seb said, "Why don’t you stay somewhere else for a bit? When Mom leaves Maple Valley, you can come back. We can’t have any more drama at home."
"I’ll stay with Isabella for a few days," Susan nodded. Even though she didn’t want to leave Hayden and Spring, there wasn’t another option.
At this moment, Seb held Susan’s shoulders and said earnestly, "Susan, I’m sorry. I might have to neglect you for a while. I need to give my mom an explanation for what happened today. Otherwise, there’ll be no peace at home."
Susan understood his feelings. She knew Carol’s temperament. If Seb didn’t show some "tough love" towards her, Carol wouldn’t let it go.
"I get it," Susan nodded and lowered her eyes.
He looked at her deeply, then reached out and pulled her into his arms.
Suddenly being pulled into his embrace, Susan felt a rush of emotions. Resting her chin on his shoulder, she said softly, "You’re so heartless. You’ve been gone for days without a word."
These past few nights, she really struggled to sleep. But her pride wouldn’t let her reach out to him first, so she waited indefinitely to see who would cave first. Only she knew the anxiety she felt inside.
But she didn’t expect this to happen, and he was urgently called back.
