Chapter 917 Lame Explanation
When Isabella heard that, she immediately stretched her neck and glared, "Are you kidding me? There's no one in the world I'm afraid of!"
"Then just go! You used to love these annual parties for the food and gifts," Susan said, holding Isabella's hand.
"Fine, I'll go, okay?" Isabella reluctantly agreed.
"Seb will pick me up after work, and we'll go together?" Susan said, grinning as Isabella gave in.
Isabella quickly shook her head, "I'll go by myself. Going with you guys would draw too much attention."
"Suit yourself," Susan said with a smile.
"Thanks for your dress," Isabella said, grabbing the dress box and heading out.
As soon as she left Susan's office, Isabella's smile vanished.
Right then, Isabella regretted agreeing to attend the Prosperity Group's annual party so easily.
Thinking back, it seemed like Susan had used some reverse psychology to get her to agree.
But Isabella also knew that Susan had always tried to set her up with Leon, and it never worked out. It seemed she hadn't given up yet.
Looking at the dress box in her hands, Isabella couldn't focus on her work. Her feelings were all over the place; she both wanted to see Leon and didn't want to see him.
Knowing that Seb would pick up Susan and that Leon would definitely be with them, Isabella left work early to go home and change to avoid Leon.
Isabella arrived fashionably late, wearing a long black dress, well after the party had started.
The banquet hall was huge, filled with flowers, drinks, and fruits.
There were tons of people at the party, men in suits and women dressed to impress.
Isabella ran into a few former colleagues and exchanged pleasantries before glancing around.
Suddenly, she spotted a familiar figure, and her heart skipped a beat.
Leon stood about 6 feet away, dressed in a black suit, holding a wine glass in his left hand, looking as sharp and energetic as ever.
The difference was that today, a flashy woman in a khaki long dress stood beside him. Isabella recognized her as Bronte Langley, a former colleague and now an assistant in the finance department at Prosperity Group.
Bronte lightly held Leon's arm, her eyes fixed on him with a bright, admiring gaze, her lips curved in a constant smile.
At this moment, Isabella frowned.
She couldn't help but think, 'Leon and Bronte? When did they get together? They seem pretty close. Could it be an office romance?'
Isabella felt uncomfortable, like a heavy stone was pressing on her chest, making it hard to breathe.
Just then, Leon suddenly found Isabella in the crowd.
Their eyes met briefly, and Leon frowned, while Isabella quickly lowered her gaze and turned away.
Upon arriving at the banquet hall, Susan casually mentioned that Isabella would also be attending.
Leon felt a bit uneasy when he heard that. Bronte had mentioned she couldn't find a date for the evening and asked him to help out. Leon had initially wanted to refuse. He had attended the Prosperity Group's annual parties for years and always went alone because he couldn't stand the inconvenience of bringing a date.
But then a vice president of Prosperity Group personally asked Leon to accompany Bronte. He couldn't say no to the VP, and it was just a date, not a marriage proposal, so he reluctantly agreed.
Knowing Isabella would be there made Leon uneasy. It wasn't that he didn't want to see her; he was worried she'd get the wrong idea about him and Bronte.
Isabella picked up a glass of red wine and took a sip, finding it bitter.
Leon gently pushed Bronte's hand off his arm and said, "A friend of mine just arrived. I'm going to say hello."
"Sure," Bronte replied with a compliant smile.
Leon walked straight to Isabella, hesitating for a few seconds behind her before saying, "You came too?"
Hearing someone speak behind her, Isabella turned around and saw Leon standing in front of her.
Seeing Leon, Isabella's heart raced.
But she wouldn't show her panic in front of him. She smiled and said, "Susan invited me."
"I know." Leon nodded.
"Then why did you ask?" Isabella muttered.
Leon pretended not to hear and glanced at the various foods on the long table, saying, "The pastries are especially good this time. You should try some."
"Thanks!" Isabella said, looking up with a distant attitude.
At this moment, Leon unintentionally glanced at Bronte, who was looking their way from a distance.
Isabella noticed his gaze and smiled, saying, "Bronte looks very pretty today."
Hearing this, Leon frowned and quickly said, "Bronte couldn't find a date last minute, so we just settled for a pairing."
Hearing this, Isabella couldn't hide her jealousy and said, "Leon, you're too ungrateful. Bronte is so pretty, and you say you're just making do. You're so arrogant."
Although Isabella's words seemed to defend Bronte, they actually expressed her own dissatisfaction.
Realizing that Isabella might have misunderstood, Leon quickly explained, "Isabella, don't misunderstand. Bronte and I are just colleagues."
At this moment, Isabella coldly interrupted Leon, saying, "Leon, it's none of my business. You don't need to explain to me. You're free to be with whoever you want, right?"
Leon stared at Isabella, gripping his wine glass tightly, his voice almost coming through gritted teeth. "You're absolutely right."
For some reason, seeing Leon angry made Isabella feel particularly satisfied.
She smirked, then turned her face away, no longer looking at him.
Seeing this, Leon felt it was pointless. He glanced at Isabella and then turned to leave.
When Isabella turned back, she saw that Leon had already left, and she couldn't help but feel annoyed.
At this moment, Isabella saw Leon walking straight to Bronte. Bronte beamed at him, and Leon even put his arm around Bronte's bare shoulder.
