Chapter 274 Canceling the Wedding
Henry furrowed his brow and asked Susan, "Susan, are you unhappy?"
Susan was momentarily speechless, unsure how to respond.
If Henry had asked half an hour ago, she would've said she was very happy. But now, everything had changed. Would he be even more shocked to hear the wedding was canceled?
Seeing Susan's silence, Henry said, "I thought you were happy, so I wished you well. But it seems that's not the case."
Susan looked closely at Henry. In just a few years, he was no longer the lively university lecturer she remembered.
Though his clothes were still neat and his demeanor gentle, his eyes lacked light, and he seemed drained, shrouded in despondency.
Seeing Henry like this, Susan felt a pang of regret and pain. Had he and Dorothy been struggling these past few years? How had time worn him down so much?
Despite her feelings, Susan knew Henry was now Dorothy's husband, and there was a rift between her and Dorothy. She couldn't have much contact with him.
Intervening, Susan spoke up, her tone determined, "Henry, my happiness is my concern alone. Your attention should remain centered on Dorothy and Amanda."Even though Susan and Dorothy were on the outs, Susan genuinely wished for Dorothy's happiness. She hoped that Dorothy and Henry could find joy in their relationship. After all, Amanda was an innocent party in their dynamic, and it was important for Catherine to have peace as well.
Hearing this, Henry looked deeply hurt. He turned away and said, "Susan, I can't go on with Dorothy."
Susan was shocked. "Are you planning to divorce Dorothy?" she asked, frowning.
Before Henry could answer, a sharp female voice came from behind Susan.
"Isn't it clear? You canceled the wedding, he divorces me, and then you two can start a new family!"
Susan turned and saw Dorothy approaching in high heels.
Dorothy looked arrogant, her eyes cold as she glared at Henry and disdainful as she looked at Susan, as if they were her enemies.
"Dorothy, what nonsense are you talking about?" Henry growled.
"Am I talking nonsense? We've been married for almost three years, and you've never forgotten her! The way you look at her is gentler than the way you look at me. Do you think I'm a fool?" Dorothy shouted.
Henry's face flushed, and finally, he stomped his foot and said, "Yes, you're right. I do like Susan. I've always liked her and never stopped!"
Dorothy was taken aback. "Henry, this is unbelievable!" Her voice trembled as tears welled up in her eyes, and she stepped back, overcome with emotion.
"Even if I may not be perfect, you were the one who willingly entered my life. I never forced you. You chose to be with me. I didn't deceive you. Right from the beginning, I couldn't offer you my full heart. You understood this but refused to acknowledge it," Henry's voice cracked, revealing the strain he was under as he reached his breaking point."Do you know how much I love you? And you say such things. For three years, I've stood by your side, attuned to your every mood. Your joy is my joy, your troubles are my own. I've taken care of your needs and raised Amanda well. What more can I do? How do I make you see the light?" Dorothy cried, squatting on the ground.
"Dorothy, love is mutual. You can't force it on someone who doesn't love you. It puts a lot of pressure on me. These three years have been tough. Yes, I tried to love you, but I just couldn't. I'm sorry!" Henry stepped back, his eyes full of apology but also determination.
"And what about Amanda?" Dorothy cried bitterly.
Mentioning Amanda, a trace of warmth flashed in Henry's eyes. "If you want to keep Amanda, I'll provide enough alimony for both of you every month. If not, I'll take custody, and you won't need to pay child support. You can visit her anytime," he offered.
Dorothy let out a cold laugh. "So, you've thought it all out. You've wanted to divorce me for a long time, haven't you?" Her eyes turned vicious.
Seeing the argument, Susan knew their conflict had been brewing for a long time. It seemed Henry was resolute this time, unwilling to retreat.
Feeling awkward and unable to handle their issues, Susan, still in her wedding dress, lifted her skirt and turned to walk towards the lounge. However, Dorothy swiftly intercepted her path, standing firm in her resolve.
Met with Dorothy's intense gaze, Susan couldn't help but feel a pang of revulsion. "What do you want?" she snapped.
"Did you and Henry make some kind of deal?" Dorothy asked.
"What do you mean by that? I don't understand," Susan said coldly.
Susan wondered what Dorothy was thinking. What did she have to do with Henry? Couldn't Dorothy see that any admiration he held for her was purely one-sided?
Dorothy, in a defeated tone, said, "Do you think I'm a fool? Henry is divorcing me, and you and George canceled today's wedding. Isn't there some connection?"
Susan braced for the confrontation, but the unfolding situation caught her off guard.
Henry was stunned, staring at Dorothy in disbelief. It was far-fetched. Susan and George were about to have their wedding, with hundreds of guests waiting. George canceling the wedding was truly shocking.
"Are you saying George just announced the wedding was canceled?" Susan confirmed with Dorothy.
Dorothy sneered, "Not only did he personally announce the cancellation, but he also took all the blame. Susan, George has always been obedient to you. This time, the cancellation must be because of you, right?"
