Chapter 1376 Best Man and Maid of Honor
After Daryl left, Cecilia's life settled back into its usual routine, but it felt almost too routine. Every day was the same: baking cakes, brewing coffee, closing the shop, eating, and sleeping. Cecilia suddenly realized her life had become as bland as plain oatmeal, completely devoid of any excitement.
Cecilia figured it was because Thaddeus wasn't around anymore. When Thaddeus was there, her days were full, and she'd fall asleep exhausted. Her dull life had nothing to do with that guy named Daryl.
While she was making a cake, Cecilia's phone suddenly rang.
She pulled out her phone and saw that it was Elowen calling.
After washing her hands, Cecilia answered the call.
"Hey, bride-to-be! Aren't you busy planning your wedding? How do you have time to call me?" Cecilia teased with a smile.
On the other end, Elowen spoke calmly, "Cecilia, I need a favor."
Cecilia chuckled, "You're about to marry into a wealthy family, what could you possibly need my help with? Just ask Elijah, he can handle anything!"
Elowen replied, "Even Elijah can't find me a suitable maid of honor."
Cecilia was taken aback. "Elowen, what do you mean?"
"Boss, I want you to be my maid of honor," Elowen answered.
Cecilia frowned and said, "Elowen, I've been married, had a child, and divorced. It's not exactly lucky for me to be your maid of honor. You should find a young, unmarried girl. If you really can't find anyone, ask Calliope. I'll give her special leave, but if she goes, I won't be able to attend your wedding."
Cecilia had her reasons. After all, she and Daryl were divorced, and attending Elijah's wedding didn't seem appropriate.
But Elowen pleaded, "Cecilia, please help me. I really want you to be my maid of honor. You have such a great image and presence; it would mean a lot to me. If you don't help me, I'll be really upset. Please, just this once."
Hearing Elowen's plea, Cecilia didn't know what to say and ended the call with a vague promise.
After hanging up, Cecilia frowned.
She used to be Daryl's wife and knew many people in the Fields family. Now that she was divorced, being the maid of honor at Elijah's wedding would be awkward for everyone. But Elowen kept pleading, and Elowen was a kind and hardworking girl who had helped a lot at the café, so Cecilia was conflicted.
Seeing Cecilia's troubled expression, Calliope laughed, "Elowen asked you to be her maid of honor, huh?"
Cecilia nodded, "Yeah, but I'm a divorced woman. How can I be a maid of honor?"
"Boss, don't be so old-fashioned. Just because you're divorced doesn't mean you can't be a maid of honor. Look at you, still young and beautiful. Standing next to Elowen, you'd make her proud. You know Elowen's parents divorced when she was young, and they both started new families and don't keep in touch with her. She was raised by her grandparents, who are no longer around. She probably wants you to be her maid of honor and a stand-in family member for support," Calliope explained.
Hearing this, Cecilia hesitated even more.
Calliope was right; Elowen was indeed a very unfortunate girl.
"Boss, don't worry. The new girl we hired is very capable, and I've almost mastered your cake-making skills. We can handle the café. Plus, you can take the opportunity to visit Thaddeus," Calliope encouraged.
"We'll see," Cecilia remained hesitant. Being a maid of honor would be really awkward.
The winter nights in Maple Valley were deep and dark. Daryl sat at his desk, a cigarette between his fingers.
Since returning from Cecilia's city, Daryl had become even more silent, and his smoking habit had worsened. Even in winter, he kept the window open, making his room quite cold.
Suddenly, a knock on the door broke the silence.
"Come in!" Daryl called out.
The door opened, and Elijah walked in.
As soon as he entered, Elijah frowned. "Daryl, can't you cut down on smoking? It's winter, and you'll catch a cold with the window open all the time!"
Elijah closed the window as he spoke.
Daryl took another drag of his cigarette, ignoring Elijah's advice. "How's the wedding planning going?" he asked.
"Everything's ready, except for a best man," Elijah replied.
"Finding a best man is easy. You have plenty of friends and classmates. If you can't find one, I can help," Daryl said.
Elijah grinned and approached Daryl. "No need for that. I have someone in mind."
Daryl looked at Elijah. "What do you mean?"
"Daryl, why don't you be my best man?" Elijah suggested with a smile.
Daryl frowned. "Are you kidding? I'm divorced."
"So what? I don't care. Dad's gone, and you're the closest person to me. I want you by my side when I get married," Elijah said emotionally.
Daryl paused, then nodded. "Alright."
"Really?" Elijah was thrilled.
"It's just being a best man, not a death sentence," Daryl said, giving Elijah a look.
"Promise you won't back out!" Elijah laughed.
"Why would I? It's late, go be with Elowen," Daryl said.
"Alright, I'm going. Don't forget!" Elijah reminded as he left.
Elijah walked into his and Elowen's bedroom, excited. "Daryl agreed to be my best man."
Elowen smiled, "And with my persistent pleading and a bit of a sob story, Cecilia agreed to be my maid of honor!"
"That's fantastic! Victory!" Elijah high-fived Elowen.
"Let's hope this brings them back together," Elijah added.
