Chapter 235 Let Me Take Care of You
Susan stared at the elevator's indicator light, hoping it would hurry up. But today, it seemed to stop at every floor. She pressed the button a few times, but it didn't help.
Just then, George, dressed in a suit and carrying a briefcase, walked out of the house.
"Aren't you gonna chill for a bit? Heading to work?" Susan asked, trying to stay calm despite feeling awkward.
George seemed just like his usual self, and Susan figured she might be overanalyzing things.
With a smile, George explained, "I've got a ton of work at the law firm. No time to rest."
Glancing at his watch, he frowned. "You're going to be late."
"Yeah," Susan said, eyeing the slow elevator.
"I can drive you. We still have time," George offered.
"No need. We're not going the same way, and you're busy. I'll call a cab." Susan shook her head.
Finally, the elevator arrived.
Susan, holding a piece of bread, walked in, and George followed.
Once the doors closed, they were stuck in the small space together.
Neither spoke. Susan felt the atmosphere was a bit strange.
In the reflective walls, she saw George watching her. She frowned and quickly took a bite of her bread to hide her nerves.
"Is it my fault you didn't have time for breakfast?" George suddenly asked.
Susan choked on the bread, surprised he spoke.
"What's wrong?" George, worried, patted her back.
Susan felt a wave of embarrassment flood over her. How could she choke at a time like this? She was still coughing as the elevator doors pinged open on the first floor.
George stood by, anxious, but could only pat her back. After a couple of minutes, Susan caught her breath, clutching her chest, her face flushed.
"Feeling better?" George asked, frowning.
"I'm fine." Susan shook her head.
Seeing she was okay, George took the bread from her hand, smiling. "Looks like you can't enjoy this. I'll finish it."
"You didn't have breakfast either?" Susan asked, surprised at how heartily he ate.
"I had a fever all night and no appetite," George replied with a smile.
Watching him eat her half-eaten bread without disgust, Susan felt a mix of emotions.
"I have to go," she said, still in a hurry, and turned to leave.
With a mouthful of bread, George grabbed her wrist. "It's rush hour; you won't get a cab. Let me give you a ride," he said, swallowing the bread.
"But," Susan started to refuse, not wanting to trouble him.
George, however, was already pulling her towards the parking lot.
Under his insistence, Susan got into his car.
On the way, she stared out the window, feeling George's occasional glances and faint smile.
That smile gave her goosebumps. She wasn't sure if she was overthinking or if George was acting differently today. Either way, she felt uneasy.
"Sorry for making you take care of me last night. You barely got any shut-eye, skipped breakfast, and now you're running late." George finally broke the silence.
Susan quickly replied, "You were sick. Besides, you're driving me to work now, so I shouldn't be late."
Glancing at her phone, she saw there was still some leeway. Yet, memories of the previous night made her cheeks flush."Um."
"Um."
They both spoke at the same time and then stopped.
Susan tucked her hair behind her ear and made small talk. "By the way, your friend's company is doing well, getting a lot of business."
"My friend comes from a business family. He's starting his own venture, and his family has given him a lot of connections. He told me you're doing great at his company and wants to give you a raise. He's afraid you'll leave. Where else could he find such a diligent and capable employee?" George said with a smile.
Despite the awkwardness, George seemed in a good mood and looked energetic, not like someone who had just been sick.
Susan smiled. "The boss takes good care of me, letting me have an extra half-hour break at noon to feed Spring. The work isn't much, so I definitely won't leave."
"If he knew you said that, he'd be delighted." George laughed.
Soon, the car stopped in front of Susan's building.
George looked at his watch. "It's five minutes to nine, just in time."
"Thank you," Susan said, unbuckling her seatbelt. She picked up her bag and reached for the door.
George frowned and grabbed her arm. "Wait!"
Surprised, Susan turned back to see George's serious expression. He seemed to want to say something but hesitated.
"What's wrong?" she asked.
"Susan, let me take care of you and Spring," George said, his eyes fixed on her. His voice was soft but earnest.
Susan was stunned!
'What did George mean by taking care of me and Spring?' She mulled over his words, feeling lost and unsure how to react. She hadn't anticipated such a comment right before she was about to step out of the car.
Seeing her hesitation, George continued, "You need a man, Spring needs a father, and I need someone to take care of me. Wouldn't it be good for the three of us to meet each other's needs?"
