Chapter 118 Beaten

"I am, who are you?" Susan asked, thinking it was someone coming to settle a bill, still smiling.

Vivian strutted up in her high heels, eyeing Susan up and down. "Are you Susan?" she asked.

"Yes, and you are..." Susan began, but before she could finish, Vivian slapped her hard across the face.

The slap echoed through the office. Susan's ear went deaf instantly, and she staggered in her own high heels. If Maria hadn't caught her, she would've fallen.

"Who do you think you are, hitting people like that? Do you even know where you are?" Maria snapped at Vivian.

Vivian glanced at Maria, took off her sunglasses, revealing her perfectly made-up face, and sneered, "You must be new here. No wonder you don't recognize me."

Supported by Maria, Susan shook her head, trying to clear the ringing in her ear. She was starting to panic.

"Who are you?" Maria demanded.

Just then, Fiona walked in with a few others. Seeing Vivian, she smiled and said, "Miss Rogers, you're here?"

"If I didn't come, someone here would be causing chaos!" Vivian shot a look at Susan.

"No one can mess with you," Fiona said, sucking up to Vivian, and the others followed suit.

Though Susan couldn't hear, she could tell from their expressions that this woman was someone important. She guessed it must be Vivian.

Vivian stepped closer to Susan, and Fiona pushed Maria away. Cornering Susan against the wall, Vivian pointed at her face. "I've seen women like you, trying to climb up by any means when they see a man with money and power. Have you ever thought about your own status? What do you have besides being a bit younger? It's pathetic!"

Susan, unable to hear, shouted, "You have no right to hit me, no matter your reason!"

Susan's voice was particularly loud because she couldn't hear well. She grew increasingly anxious—could she be going deaf?

Fiona stepped forward and shoved Susan. "Being a homewrecker is reason enough. How dare you act like you're in the right? You deserve it!"

The employees behind Vivian were gossiping, clearly enjoying Susan's misfortune.

Susan, panicking from her sudden deafness, tried to push Fiona and Vivian away, but they blocked her and kept berating her.

Just then, George appeared. He pulled Vivian away, glanced at the helpless Susan, and then looked at Vivian.

"Why are you back?" George frowned at Vivian.

"Can't I come back?" Vivian shot back, her eyes sharp.

"That's not what I meant!" George said, noticing something was wrong with Susan.

Seeing George, Susan felt like she had found a savior. She knew only he could help her now.

"I can't hear!" Susan shouted, her voice loud with fear and her inability to hear herself.

Everyone was shocked.

George immediately stepped forward to support her. "What's wrong?" he asked.

Susan couldn't hear him, only repeating, "I can't hear, my ears can't hear."

George quickly said, "I'll take you to the hospital!" and pulled her along.

Susan couldn't hear him but followed, trusting George to help.

"George," Vivian called out, frowning as he left with Susan, but he ignored her.

"I didn't hit her that hard. How can she not hear?" Vivian muttered after they left.

"She's faking it. She's full of tricks," Fiona added.

Vivian looked at Fiona and agreed, her guilt fading. "Susan's cunning. I'll have to take her seriously."

"See? I told you she's tricky," Fiona said, fueling the fire.

"Hmph, I'll make sure she gets out of George and Vivian Law Firm!" Vivian said, clenching her fist before leaving.

Fiona smirked, satisfied.

George took Susan to the hospital, explained the situation, and she was taken for tests.

The medical staff, in white coats and masks, used cold instruments to examine her. Susan couldn't hear anything, relying on her eyes to understand.

She saw the mouths of the masked staff moving but couldn't hear them or the instruments. She only felt their coldness.

Maria stayed by her side, holding her hand for comfort.

Susan had faced many hardships, but none made her feel so lost and helpless.

Today, she was really scared. What if she couldn't hear anymore? She'd be deaf.

She wouldn't hear voices, music, or even car horns. How would she live, work, and support her family? Dorothy hadn't graduated yet, and the household burdens were still on her.

After the tests, Maria helped Susan out of the examination room.

George, waiting outside, anxiously stepped forward. "Susan, can you still not hear?" he asked.

Susan saw his mouth moving but could only shake her head in confusion.

At that moment, a figure in a black trench coat quickly approached her from the stairwell.
