Chapter 56 Consideration
About half an hour later, the door creaked open.
Susan, who had been admiring a painting on the wall, turned to see Seb walk in. She studied his face. Despite his stern expression, there was no trace of the heated argument he'd just had with Carol.
"These paintings are pretty nice," Susan said with a smile, trying to ease the earlier tension.
Seb smirked. "They're all authentic works by famous artists."
Susan quickly stuck out her tongue, realizing her ignorance. "How famous are we talking?"
"Top-tier in their time. The first and second place ones are in my dad's study and safe. Even I can't look at them casually," Seb replied.
The auction price for these top contemporary artists' works must be astronomical. If they are the first and second place, it must be tens of millions of dollars. Susan knew Seb's family was wealthy, but she didn't expect them to be this rich.
Everything in Seb's house was an antique, no wonder Carol thought any woman around Seb was after their family fortune.
"Hungry? We can eat now," Seb said, noticing Susan's surprised expression.
"Sure," Susan nodded.
Seeing Susan's reluctant gaze at the paintings, Seb said with amusement, "If you like them, I'll give you a couple."
"No way! The police would think I stole them. Plus, I'd be scared of them getting stolen. Having these around is like carrying a time bomb. It's safer to leave them here," Susan said, remembering the police post a hundred feet in front of the Anderson mansion, likely there on purpose. After all, Seb's family was a combination of high-ranking officials and wealthy elites.
Seb couldn't help but laugh. Susan always had a way of saying things that were both surprising and amusing.
Sitting at the large dining table on the first floor of the villa, with a dozen exquisite dishes, various pastries, and desserts laid out, and tableware matching the mahogany furniture, Susan felt like she had stepped into a palace.
"Our chef is best at royal cuisine. Try it, it tastes pretty good," Seb said, picking up his fork.
At this moment, Susan glanced at the main seat and the seat opposite Seb.
Seb understood Susan's meaning and explained, "My mom has a gathering with her friends, so she won't be eating at home. It's just the two of us for lunch today."
Hearing this, Susan immediately showed a relaxed smile. She picked up her utensils and began to taste the exquisite dishes she had never seen before.
Just now, Susan was worried about how awkward it would be to eat with Carol. Her stomach had been growling, and she thought she wouldn't get to eat much today, but to her surprise, Carol wasn't there.
Seeing Susan's relaxed and happy demeanor, Seb casually said while eating, "I didn't expect you to not be afraid of my mom at all."
Hearing this, Susan glared at him and said, "She's not a monster, why should I be afraid of her? She's your mother, my mother-in-law in name, so I just have to tolerate her a bit."
Seb smirked. "So far, no one has dared to talk to my mom like that."
"I'm just standing up for myself. No one deserves to be insulted, and the accusations she made against me are too serious to ignore," Susan said, pouting.
Seb glanced at Susan and suddenly asked, "What accusations did she make against you?"
"Obviously, that I'm after your money. Do you even need to ask?" Susan felt Seb's intelligence was failing him.
"So you're saying you're not after my money?" Seb smirked.
"Isn't that obvious?" Susan's voice grew louder.
"So you're after me?" Seb asked, a bit shamelessly.
Hearing this, Susan hesitated for a moment, then quickly picked up her juice to cover her sudden nervousness and said, "Please, you're not as attractive to me as your money."
She married Seb just to give her child a legitimate status. 'How could Seb forget the words he used to persuade me back then? But why did I feel nervous at this moment?' Susan thought, trying to calm herself down.
Seb was stunned for a moment, then suddenly said, "After lunch, we'll head back to Maple Valley."
"So soon?" Susan asked in surprise.
She thought they would stay for a day or two since Seb rarely came home.
"Why, you don't want to leave and want to stay a couple more days?" Seb's face returned to its usual sternness, but his tone had a hint of teasing.
"No, I just feel a bit out of place here," Susan said, looking around. She felt the place was too grand and noble, and she wouldn't be able to sleep at night.
The next moment, Seb instructed Laura to call Leon to prepare the car. Half an hour later, they were driving out of the central district.
After about half an hour's drive, the car suddenly turned into what looked like a high-end resort.
Susan couldn't help but ask Seb beside her, "Aren't we going back to Maple Valley?"
Seb glanced at the puzzled Susan and said, "Since we're already out, let's stay here for a night and take a break."
Hearing this, Susan smiled knowingly. She thought Seb's suggestion was great and turned to admire the scenery of the resort outside the window.
Although the resort's scenery was beautiful, Susan, being pregnant, couldn't handle much fatigue. She went straight to sleep upon returning to the hotel.
The afternoon sun was exceptionally bright. Susan was sleeping in the bedroom while Seb was working on his computer in the living room.
Susan was a light sleeper. Although she was drowsy, she could still hear the voices from outside.
"Mr. Anderson, Ronald Lewis from the resort heard that you and Mrs. Anderson are staying here, so he and Mrs. Lewis are hosting a dinner to welcome you and Mrs. Anderson," said Leon.
Seb hesitated for a moment and replied, "Tell Ronald that Susan's pregnancy symptoms are severe, and she's not up for guests. Thank him for his hospitality, and I'll host them at Maple Valley another day."
"Understood. Mr. Anderson, you're so good to Mrs. Anderson. Mr. Lewis had offended you in the past, and now you're letting bygones be bygones for Mrs. Anderson's sake. Mr. Lewis is really lucky," Leon said with a smile.
"It's been so long, I've forgotten about it," Seb said lightly.
"You say that, but you always hated people like Mr. Lewis who are untrustworthy," Leon said.
