Chapter 41 Conflict
Susan looked pale from morning sickness and couldn't wear makeup. She dressed down, avoiding high heels, and looked pretty plain. She wasn't exactly a source of family pride, especially being pregnant, and James didn't even know she was married.
James's words made Susan see red. She snapped back, "I don't steal, I don't rob, and I don't mess around with men. Why should I be ashamed to be here?"
Susan glanced over at Sophia and Amelia, already seated at a nearby banquet table.
James wasn't dumb. He caught Susan's drift and got even angrier. "You've completely embarrassed me!"
"You're mistaken. The daughter who embarrasses you is over there. I have nothing to do with you anymore," Susan said coldly.
"Do you want to get slapped again?" James stepped forward, hands on his hips.
"If you hit me again, I'll call the cops!" Susan shot back.
"Both of you, knock it off! Why do you always fight when you're together?" Catherine quickly stepped between them, looking helpless.
Hearing Susan's threat to call the police, James seemed to back off a bit. He cursed at Catherine, "Look at what you've raised! No manners at all. Not only is she ungrateful, but she's also pregnant out of wedlock. She has no shame!"
After a few more nasty words, James stormed off. Susan, still fuming, wanted to chase after him, but Catherine held her back.
"Susan, today is Paul's wedding. We can't help Charles much, so let's not cause any trouble!" Catherine said, almost in tears.
Susan knew Catherine had spent a long time getting ready today. The clothes she wore were ones she had been saving for a special occasion. Susan understood that she wanted to see James, as it had been a long time since they last met. Now, after being scolded by James for not knowing how to raise her, Catherine felt terrible. Susan decided to let it go and not argue with James anymore.
Trying to keep the peace, Catherine and Susan sat at a banquet table far from James, Sophia, and Amelia.
Catherine was no longer part of the Wilson family, and Susan hadn't achieved much either, so the Wilson family's snobbish relatives didn't pay them any attention.
In contrast, James and Sophia were doing quite well. They had opened an insurance company and bought a big house, so the relatives were very friendly with them, constantly toasting each other.
Although Charles, Abigail, Paul, and Shirley all came to toast Catherine and Susan, not neglecting them, Catherine still felt uncomfortable and ate very little.
Susan noticed this and felt a pang of sadness. She whispered to Catherine, "Mom, it's getting late. How about we go home?"
Catherine looked at the guests enjoying their meals and shook her head. "We've already come, so let's stay a bit longer. We don't want people to say we're impolite."
Catherine was a typical good wife, but she was too weak and never fought back, always accepting things as they were. This was why James had taken almost all the family assets and left Susan and Dorothy with Catherine.
But that's just how Catherine was, and Susan had to let her be. Suddenly feeling nauseous again, Susan told Catherine and quickly headed to the restroom.
After dry heaving for a bit, Susan came out and noticed a large flower basket at the entrance of the banquet hall. The ribbon read, "Seb Anderson wishes the newlyweds a lifetime of happiness."
Seeing the flower basket, Susan was stunned and couldn't snap out of it.
'Why would Seb send a flower basket to Paul and Shirley?' She thought for a moment and figured that Paul and Shirley must have some work connection with Prosperity Group, so Seb sent a flower basket as a gesture. As for attending the banquet, someone as high-profile as Seb wouldn't bother.
Just as Susan was about to step inside, someone called out to her from behind.
"Mrs. Anderson, you're here too?"
Susan turned around and saw Leon standing behind her. She was a bit surprised and said, "You came to deliver the flower basket?"
'It must be that Seb didn't come and sent Leon to deliver the flower basket and gift,' she thought.
Leon shook his head and replied, "I came with Mr. Anderson."
"Seb is here too?" Susan looked around but didn't see him.
Leon quickly explained, "Mr. Anderson ran into some acquaintances and is dining with them in a private room."
Hearing this, Susan was even more puzzled. Why would Seb lower himself to attend a common wedding banquet today?
"Oh, I'll go in first then." Although surprised, Susan didn't say anything more and turned to enter the banquet hall.
Susan stayed with Catherine until the banquet ended, and they left the hall.
In the hotel lobby, Catherine suddenly saw James approaching and quickly smiled to greet him. Susan, seeing this, didn't want to interfere and stayed where she was.
"James, did you have a good meal?" Catherine asked, somewhat submissively.
"If you have something to say, say it quickly. I'm in a hurry to leave," James said impatiently.
Catherine smiled and said, "Dorothy is in her sophomore year of college. You have a lot of experience. Can you help her think about her future career?"
"Since Dorothy has always been dull, she can just find any job when she graduates," James said with disdain.
Catherine persisted, "Dorothy is your daughter too. Can you help her think about it?"
"Fine, I got it," James reluctantly agreed.
Seeing Catherine being so submissive, Susan was already fuming. She immediately walked over, grabbed Catherine, and said, "Mom, you've said enough. Let's go!"
Catherine wanted to say something more.
At that moment, a sharp voice suddenly came from behind them.
"Catherine, you've been divorced from James for so many years. Why are you still shamelessly clinging to him? Are you really that desperate? He's married now, so stop bothering him. If you keep this up, you'll become a mistress!" Sophia said arrogantly.
Catherine, who never argued, was so angry that her eyes turned red. She stammered, "How can you say that? James and I have Susan and Dorothy together. Can't I discuss Dorothy's matters with him now?"
