Chapter 89 High Position
"I quit my job to have a baby," Susan said honestly.
George nodded and exchanged a look with Anna.
Anna then said seriously, "Ms. Wilson, that's it for today. We'll be in touch."
"Okay," Susan replied, already knowing it was a no. She politely excused herself.
That evening, Isabella came home exhausted and saw Susan relaxing with a face mask. "I'm dead tired from overtime, and you're here chilling."
"Do you think I don't want to work? If I don't find a job soon, I'll starve," Susan said, frustrated.
"How did the interview go?" Isabella asked while changing.
"Guess," Susan replied.
"What?" Isabella asked.
"No chance," Susan said, feeling down.
"Don't be so negative," Isabella nudged her.
Susan sighed, "I made the interviewers laugh. No way they'll hire me."
Thinking about how Anna was shocked and George laughed, Susan felt oddly satisfied. She'd never been so candid with superiors before.
Just then, Susan's phone beeped.
"You got an email. Check it. Maybe it's good news," Isabella said.
"It's probably spam," Susan shrugged.
"Just check it," Isabella insisted, tossing the phone to her.
Susan grabbed the phone, glanced at it, and suddenly ripped off her face mask, staring in disbelief.
"What happened? Don't scare me!" Isabella asked, surprised.
Susan hugged Isabella. "I got the job!"
Isabella was shocked. "Is it the financial manager position at George and Vivian Law Firm?"
Susan nodded excitedly.
Isabella laughed. "How lucky are you? What's the salary?"
"Three-month probation, $8,000 base, $10,000 after, plus bonuses!" Susan jumped up.
"Higher than at Prosperity Group?" Isabella's eyes widened.
"You bet!" Susan nodded and flopped onto the bed.
This was the best news she'd had in days, lifting her spirits.
Isabella sighed, "You're so lucky. I'm failing at everything."
"I'm more envious of you. No relationships, no heartbreak," Susan said sadly.
Isabella quickly changed the subject. "Tomorrow's your first day. Pick out something nice to wear. Make a good impression!"
Susan agreed and started picking out clothes, shoes, and a bag for tomorrow.
The next morning, Susan arrived on time at George and Vivian Law Firm.
Today, Susan wore a simple white shirt, black striped trousers, matching boots, and a black coat. She and Isabella had spent all night picking out this professional look.
As expected, Susan had to meet the boss on her first day, so she headed straight to George Anderson's office, the boss and chief lawyer of George and Vivian Law Firm.
"Are you Ms. Wilson?" a woman in a pink shirt asked, standing up from her desk.
"Yes," Susan replied, guessing she was George's secretary.
"Hello, I'm Mr. Anderson's secretary, Zoe Parker," the woman introduced herself.
"Nice to meet you, Miss Parker. Looking forward to working with you," Susan smiled.
Susan knew from experience that a secretary could be the boss's trusted ally or even have a closer relationship. Zoe was not someone to offend.
"Likewise. Mr. Anderson wants to see you right away," Zoe smiled back.
"Okay," Susan nodded and knocked on George's office door.
"Come in!" a male voice called from inside.
Susan opened the door, walked to the desk, and smiled. "Mr. Anderson, I'm Susan..."
When George looked up from his documents, Susan froze, recognizing him.
Seeing her surprise, George smiled. "Surprised to see me?"
Susan hadn't realized the young man from the interview was actually the boss and chief lawyer. She felt a bit embarrassed about her performance yesterday.
"You're both younger than I expected," Susan said, hoping it sounded flattering.
George laughed. "You're not as straightforward today as you were yesterday."
Susan blushed. Before she could respond, George continued, "Do you know why I chose you as my financial manager?"
Susan shook her head, having spent the entire night wondering if he'd found her amusing.
George's expression turned serious. "Because you're honest. I need a financial manager who tells the truth. I'm busy with lawsuits and managing this firm, so I don't want to play mind games. Can you keep being straightforward with me?"
His words reignited Susan's passion for work. George was the kind of boss she liked.
This was her dream job: heads down, honest work, no office politics.
"Yes!" Susan answered confidently.
George smiled, stood up, and extended his hand.
Susan didn't hesitate and shook his hand firmly.
