Chapter 323 A Close Call
"I gotta find him!" Susan yelled, her voice cracking.
Henry grabbed her shoulders, his grip firm. "You can't swim, Susan! Jumping in is suicide!"
"Then let me die with him!" Susan shouted, her desperation raw and unfiltered.
Right then, Susan didn't care about life or death; all she knew was she couldn't let Seb die alone.
Henry's eyes widened for a second before he spoke calmly, "If you die, what happens to your kids?"
Susan froze.
Yeah, she still had Hayden and Spring. If she went down, what would happen to them? They couldn't lose both Seb and her.
Susan's emotions crumbled. She clung to Henry's arm, sobbing, "What about him? Is he gonna die?"
Just then, a noise came from the shore.
Henry and Susan looked up to see the rescue team rolling in. To their surprise, Leon was hopping out of the rescue truck. A bunch of officers were barking orders, sending sailors diving into the river.
Watching the uniformed guys swim towards Seb, Susan's heart filled with hope.
After what felt like forever, as expected, the soldiers brought Seb back.
As Seb was dragged ashore by two soldiers, Susan rushed over, grabbing his hand. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine." Seb's face was pale, but he still managed a smile.
His teeth were so white, even in the dim light of the setting sun.
Hearing Seb say he was fine and seeing that smile, Susan felt a wave of relief.
Seb twisted his wrist and grabbed Susan's hand.
Susan felt a jolt as Seb's wet hand clasped hers, sending a tingle up her arm.
It was then that Susan snapped back to reality.
Looking down at Seb holding her hand, Susan frowned. She felt embarrassed about losing her cool earlier and wanted to pull her hand back.
But it was too late; Seb had a tight grip on her hand.
People were gathering around them. Not wanting to make a scene, Susan decided to go along with it, though her face turned bright red.
Just then, medical personnel pushed through and asked, "Anyone hurt?"
A soldier replied, "His leg cramped, and his one leg got a nasty cut from a rock. The wound's big and needs cleaning ASAP!"
Hearing this, Susan's eyes widened as she looked at Seb. Wasn't he just smiling? How could he be hurt?
She glanced down at Seb's leg. A medic came up and cut open Seb's pant leg with scissors. Sure enough, his leg was covered in blood, with a long, deep gash filled with mud and sand. The mix of blood and muddy water was horrifying.
Seeing the wound, Susan's hands shook, and she couldn't bear to watch the medic clean it.
Seb's grip on her hand tightened.
She looked up and met Seb's eyes.
"Don't sweat it; it's just a scratch," Seb said, his voice deep and smooth.
After the medics patched Seb up, they loaded him into the ambulance.
Meanwhile, Dorothy was also rescued and was being taken to the hospital for a full check-up.
Watching the ambulance speed off into the night, Susan looked down at her hand, still feeling the warmth from Seb's grip.
When Seb was being loaded into the ambulance, he had held her hand tight, not wanting to let go.
But the ambulance couldn't fit everyone. Reluctantly, Seb let go of her hand. Yet, as he was lifted into the ambulance, he still managed to smile at her.
Susan sat in Henry's car, trailing the ambulance to the hospital.
It all felt like a dream; everything seemed too surreal.
After all this, she had no idea how to face Seb.
The car ride was dead silent. Henry drove with a furrowed brow, while Susan sat in the passenger seat, lost in her thoughts.
"You and Seb should just be together. Stop wasting time," Henry suddenly said.
Susan snapped out of her daze.
Turning to Henry, she thought she misheard. "What did you just say?"
Henry gave a bitter smile. "He loves you, and you love him. You'd die for each other. Why keep torturing yourselves?"
Susan's mind spun even more.
After a long pause, she said, "You don't get it. It's complicated."
"As long as you love each other, that's all that matters!" Henry said, sounding a bit frustrated.
Susan got where Henry was coming from. His marriage to Dorothy was a nightmare. It was sad to see Henry stuck with someone he didn't love.
Susan thought about her and Seb. Did it matter that they loved each other? The gap between them was too wide; she couldn't accept Seb anymore.
"What about Dorothy?" Susan asked as they neared the hospital.
She remembered Dorothy's threat before jumping into the river. If Henry didn't agree to stay with her, she'd take Amanda and end it all.
It was terrifying. Susan felt Dorothy had lost it, but she had no idea how to handle her.
After a long pause, Henry gripped the steering wheel tightly and said bitterly, "What can I do?"
Seeing the pain on Henry's face, Susan knew he was in a tough spot. He'd lost his job, reputation, and peace in this marriage.
Henry pulled into the hospital, and Susan saw the ambulance had already arrived, with medics quickly moving the injured inside.
Susan opened the car door, ready to get out, when she suddenly heard Henry's muffled sobs from behind.
She turned to see Henry crying into the steering wheel, his sobs quiet but heavy with emotion.
Though Henry was usually cultured and refined, he was also a strong-willed guy. But right now, facing all this, it was too much for him to handle.
