Chapter 394 Quarrel
Susan figured Linda was actually pretty chill and open-minded. After hanging out a few times, Linda didn't act all hostile, so Susan didn't see the point in lying to her. Plus, everyone would soon know she was starting her own accounting firm anyway.
"I'm not going back to Prosperity Group. I'm starting my own gig," Susan said with a grin.
Hearing this, Linda looked shocked. "I thought you'd either be Mrs. Anderson at home or the boss's wife at Prosperity Group. Didn't see this coming. Susan, you always keep me surprising."
"I'm not remarried to Seb yet, so I can't be Mrs. Anderson. Even if we do tie the knot again, I don't want to be his shadow. I need my own life and space," Susan laid it all out.
Linda stared at her for a sec before saying, "Now I get why Seb's into you. You're truly unique."
"Honestly, you're better than me. I just got lucky meeting him first," Susan said carefully, not wanting to hurt Linda's feelings.
Surprisingly, Linda was super cool about it. "Come on, you might think I'm all that, but women like me are a dime a dozen in any fancy office building. Seb deals with us every day. He didn't fall for them before, and he won't in the future. He's probably bored of our type. But someone like you, you're a rare find for him."
"Maybe," Susan smiled a bit.
She suddenly remembered the first time she met Seb at a bar. The memory was fuzzy. She only remembered Seb in a black suit, looking young and strong. She couldn't recall much else, not even his face.
Linda suddenly reached out her hand to Susan. "Susan, I wanna be friends with you. Is that cool?"
Susan was taken aback for a moment, then quickly shook her hand. "I'd love to be friends. Hope you don't mind."
Their hands met in the air, and Linda said, "Alright, I won't keep you from packing. Since we're friends now, don't blow me off when I ask you out for coffee."
"My treat," Susan said with a smile.
"I'm outta here," Linda said and walked out.
After Linda left, Susan smiled slightly.
She looked around the office. She hadn't been at Pioneer Accounting Firm long, but the past few months had been a wild ride.
From being shunned by colleagues and harassed by Elliott, almost landing in jail, to now being a department manager, treated like royalty by Walter, and getting her salary doubled—it all felt like a dream.
But honestly, Susan didn't like Pioneer Accounting Firm. It always felt suffocating, so she decided to bounce as soon as possible.
Before leaving, Susan thought, 'Maybe making friends with Linda is my only win at Pioneer Accounting Firm?'
Next, Isabella also managed to resign. For the next few days, Susan and Isabella were busy from dawn till dusk, hunting for office space, registering the company, hiring staff, and all that jazz.
That night, it was past nine when Susan finally dragged her tired self back home.
She kicked off her shoes and walked into the living room, only to see Seb, in a white shirt, sitting there under the bright lights. She was totally caught off guard! Seb, who had been away for a week, was back.
"When did you get back?" Susan asked, excitement bubbling up after not seeing him for a week.
"Where have you been? Do you even know what time it is? The kids are already asleep," Seb shot back, his brows furrowed, clearly not happy.
"Oh, I have something to tell you," Susan said with a smile, plopping down in front of him.
Lately, Susan had been out early and back late, barely spending time with the kids. She felt a bit guilty.
"What is it?" Seb asked, still looking annoyed.
"I quit my job. I’m starting my own accounting firm. Isabella quit too to help me, and Maria, who’s no longer at the law firm, is joining us. Isabella and I have been running around like crazy, looking for office space, registering the company, hiring staff. It’s been nuts," Susan eagerly spilled the beans.
But Seb cut her off, "Starting your own accounting firm? That’s ridiculous. Why didn’t you talk to me about this first?"
"You’ve been in the central district all week and didn’t have time to contact me. When was I supposed to discuss it with you?" Susan shot back.
Seb’s irritation grew. "Are you saying I’ve been neglecting you because I’ve been running back and forth between the central district and Maple Valley?"
"I never thought that," Susan denied.
In fact, she knew Seb had been super busy lately. Whether he was in Maple Valley or the central district, he was always swamped. Sometimes he’d be gone for days, even weeks. She couldn’t deny feeling lonely and empty.
Seb took a deep breath, trying to control his emotions, and paced back and forth in the living room.
Then he walked up to Susan and said softly, "I’m sorry. I’ve been under a lot of work pressure lately, and I took it out on you."
Hearing his apology, tears welled up in Susan’s eyes.
Seb continued calmly, "Susan, starting your own accounting firm is a big deal. Surviving in such a competitive environment isn’t as easy as you think. And our kids are still young. If you’re busy with work every day and I’m also swamped, neither of us will have time for the kids. This isn’t good for them. So my suggestion is to drop this idea immediately."
Susan thought that even if Seb didn’t support her starting an accounting firm, he wouldn’t outright oppose it. But his attitude now was unacceptable to her.
Frowning, she said, "Isabella and I have already quit our jobs, and Maria has joined us. Today, Isabella and I finalized the office space, and the paperwork is being processed. How can we just stop?"
"I can cover all the losses. I’ll give Isabella and Maria some money so they can find new jobs. I won’t let them suffer," Seb said, pulling out a checkbook and pen.
