Chapter 11

"Susan's had a boyfriend for years, right? They must be getting married soon," Melissa said.

Amelia shook her head. "He dumped her a few months ago and went abroad to study."

"Then whose baby is she carrying?" Melissa asked, shocked.

Amelia's eyes lit up with an idea. "I bet it's an illegitimate child. Getting pregnant out of wedlock is a big deal in our company, especially with the restructuring. They won't keep someone who might go on maternity leave and can't focus on work," she said with a sly smile.

"You mean..." Melissa frowned.

Amelia whispered, "Aren't you in finance too? Find proof of Susan's pregnancy and report it to HR. With my connection to the HR manager, I can get you some credit."

"Susan and I have no beef. What's in it for me? Just to vent your anger?" Melissa didn't think it was worth it.

Amelia frowned. "Are you dumb? Seven in your team, but only three will stay.. Wendy's definitely staying, and by seniority, Susan's one of them. The last spot is between you and Isabella, so you only have a fifty-fifty chance. If Susan gets laid off, both you and Isabella can stay, and you won't have to worry about getting cut. Plus, HR will remember your help, and you might get a good position when the company merges with headquarters."

Melissa smiled. "You're sharp. Why didn't I think of that?"

"Without evidence, it's all for nothing," Amelia said.

"Don't worry, I'll keep an eye on her. She won't hide anything from me," Melissa said fiercely.

Amelia smiled with satisfaction.

That evening, Susan was having dinner with Catherine and her sister Dorothy at an old table.

Catherine suddenly said, "Susan, Abigail found a match for you. You should meet him this weekend."

Susan was taken aback and saw Dorothy winking at her. She found an excuse to refuse. "Mom, the company is merging soon, and I'm swamped. If I don't perform well, I might get laid off."

Catherine started lecturing. "Susan, you're not getting any younger. You should consider marriage. A good marriage is better than a good job."

"Mom, one has to rely on oneself in life. Like you married James..." Seeing Catherine's expression change, Susan quickly stopped talking.

Catherine put down her fork, her face bitter. "Because I made the wrong choice back then, I want you to have a good life now. That Amelia is in the same company as you. You can't let her outshine you. You must marry better than her and make me proud."

Seeing Catherine getting emotional, Susan and Dorothy both lowered their heads.

Catherine continued, "Abigail introduced a professor from Southern University. He comes from a good family and is said to be good-looking. It's hard to find such a good match!"

"Mom, isn't that the school I'm attending?" Dorothy asked, looking up.

"Yes, it's your school. His name is Henry Thompson," Catherine said, tapping her head.

"Mr. Thompson?" Dorothy perked up.

"You know him?" Catherine asked.

"He's a celebrity at our school, elegant and refined. His classes always have to be reserved in advance, or else you'll end up standing to listen," Dorothy said with a hint of admiration.

"See, this time it's definitely a good match," Catherine said, beaming.

Susan, however, felt like crying but had no choice. For Catherine's sake, she had to go along with it.
