Chapter 962 Saying One Thing and Meaning Another
Isabella scarfed down her food, eager to finish and avoid Leon's gaze.
After a bit, she glanced up and caught Leon staring at her with those intense eyes and a slight smirk. It made her skin crawl.
She slammed her fork down and snapped, "Can you stop staring at me? It's killing my appetite."
Leon just grinned wider. "If you weren't looking at me, you wouldn't know I was looking at you."
Isabella felt her blood boil.
Seeing her fuming, Leon quickly backed off. "Okay, okay, I won't look at you anymore. Just don't get mad; it's not good for our baby."
"It's my baby, not yours!" she shot back.
Leon sighed. "Alright, your baby."
Isabella huffed, feeling a bit better, and went back to her meal in silence.
Once she was done, she put her utensils down, shot Leon a look, and got up, cradling her belly as she left the dining room.
Normally, she'd chill on the couch and watch TV after eating, but she wanted to avoid Leon, so she headed upstairs.
Just as she reached the stairs, Leon rushed over and grabbed her arm. "The stairs are steep. Take your time!"
Isabella rolled her eyes. "I don't need your help!"
She shoved his hand away and stepped onto the stairs, but her foot slipped.
Leon caught her just in time.
Isabella's heart raced. Seven months pregnant, a fall could be disastrous.
"You okay?" Leon asked, his voice full of worry.
Still shaken, Isabella looked up and saw the concern in his eyes. It stirred something inside her.
That worried look was familiar, even more intense than before. She needed someone to care for her now, and it indeed touched her heart.
But then she remembered how he had once tried to force her to abort the baby. She couldn't forgive him.
She pushed his hand away again. "I'm fine."
Holding the railing tightly, she made her way upstairs.
Leon followed her, worried she might slip again.
Isabella knew he was behind her but quickly opened her bedroom door, went in, and locked it.
Leaning against the door, she took a deep breath.
She heard the door to the next room open and close, knowing he had gone in there.
Isabella frowned. Her life had been peaceful, if a bit lonely, but his presence had thrown everything off. She didn't know how to handle it.
That evening, she called Susan.
"Did Leon come to see you?" Susan asked as soon as she picked up.
Isabella frowned. "You knew? Why didn't you give me a heads-up? If I'd known he'd be here, I'd have booked a flight back to Maple Valley right away."
"I knew you'd say that, so I kept quiet," Susan replied.
"You're such a traitor! Now that you're Seb's wife, you're siding with his employees, huh?" Isabella grumbled.
Susan dropped the teasing and got serious. "Isabella, I don't know why Leon wanted you to give up the baby last time, but I know he's a responsible guy. He's really sincere about seeing you this time. Maybe give him a chance, and yourself too. The baby needs a dad."
"We grew up without dads and turned out fine, didn't we? And now we both have kids," Isabella shot back.
"But we know the struggles we went through. If we had good dads, our lives might not have been perfect, but they wouldn't have been so tough, right?" Susan said, her voice full of emotion.
Isabella was silent, not knowing what to say, but she still didn't want to change her mind.
After a long pause, Susan added, "You have two months left before the baby is due. I was really worried, especially with only Kathy there to help you. Cecilia's kind, but she's got her own stuff going on. Now that Leon's there, I can finally relax a bit."
"Seems like you trust Leon more than Seb," Isabella said, a hint of jealousy in her voice.
"What? Are you jealous?" Susan laughed.
"No way! Who he ends up with doesn't matter to me anymore. I actually hope he finds someone and gets married soon so he won't bother me!" Isabella said angrily.
"You're just saying that. If that day ever comes, you'll regret it," Susan said.
"Alright, I'm done talking to you. You must've taken Leon's money to speak up for him." With that, Isabella hung up.
She tossed her phone aside and placed her hand on her belly, feeling all sorts of confused.
The next morning, Isabella slept in late.
With the baby growing, she couldn't get up early and was always super sleepy, often combining breakfast and lunch.
She slowly walked downstairs. The living room was quiet, and Kathy was alone in the kitchen prepping lunch. Isabella found it odd that Leon wasn't around.
Soon, Kathy set lunch on the dining table.
Isabella started eating, occasionally glancing at Kathy, who was quietly eating across from her. She wanted to ask where Leon had gone but couldn't bring herself to do it.
Kathy noticed Isabella's puzzled look and said, "Oh, Mr. Johnson went out early this morning and said not to wait for him for lunch."
Isabella hesitated for a moment before saying, "Did he take his luggage? I think he should go back as soon as possible!"
Kathy squinted and smiled. "Ms. Brown, we often say one thing and mean another, but you should know your limits. Don't push Mr. Johnson away."
