Chapter 1207 Palpitations
Hearing his changed voice, Cecilia's tears flowed even more fiercely.
She heartlessly hung up the phone.
Staring at the still-flashing phone screen with tearful eyes, Cecilia realized that she and Daryl were saying their final goodbye.
For two consecutive days, her mood was very low.
On Saturday morning, Barry drove over to pick her up.
Golden sunlight bathed the earth as Barry cheerfully drove, and she, sitting in the passenger seat, admired the scenery through the car window.
"Once you leave the city, the air feels so much better," Barry said with a smile.
"Yeah, the city is too noisy," Cecilia nodded.
Two hours later, he brought her to a picturesque place.
In the valley, the maple leaves were a fiery red, a small stream flowed continuously by the roadside, the air was fresh, and birds chirped in the serene valley, purifying one's soul.
He plucked a fiery red maple leaf from a branch and handed it to her. "For you."
Seeing the fiery red maple leaf in his hand, Cecilia smiled and took it. "Thank you."
Then, Cecilia sat on a large rock, holding the maple leaf in her hand.
Barry stood 15 feet away from her, with an easel in front of him, focused on painting a portrait of Cecilia.
In the evening, Barry and Cecilia had dinner at a restaurant in a mountain lodge, with the TV in the hall broadcasting Maple Valley news.
"Although the environment here is nice, it's a bit cold. Make sure to bundle up," Barry still thoughtfully reminded her.
"I'm not a child anymore, stop nagging," Cecilia said with a smile.
Barry was considerate. Living with him in the future would be very happy.
"I always feel like I'm nagging, but if I don't remind you, I feel uneasy," Barry said.
"I know you care about me," Cecilia said sincerely.
"By the way, since the environment here is so good, why don't we stay a few more days?" Barry suddenly suggested.
Cecilia thought for a moment and then said, "Sure, I haven't taken my annual leave yet, so why not take it now."
Cecilia had been feeling very stressed and down lately. Since she had already made a choice, it was better to stay away from Maple Valley for a while. She hoped that she and Barry could gradually get better, which would help her let go of Daryl sooner.
Hearing Cecilia agree, Barry was very happy and quickly said, "There's an even more beautiful place 200 miles from here. We can leave tomorrow."
"Okay," Cecilia nodded and continued eating.
Then, they chatted.
Suddenly, the female anchor on the Maple Valley news reported a breaking news story on TV.
"Now for a breaking news story. This evening, a flight from Maple Valley to Skyhaven encountered a malfunction during takeoff, forcing an emergency landing. The plane's tail was damaged, and a fire broke out. Several crew members and passengers were injured or killed. According to the passenger list provided by the airport, Mr. Daryl Fields, the CEO of the Fields Group from Maple Valley, was on this flight..."
Upon hearing this news, Cecilia's hand trembled, and her knife and fork fell to the floor!
What? An emergency landing? Daryl was on that flight?
No! She must have misheard. How could it be such a coincidence?
Just a few days ago, he had said goodbye to her. How could he have encountered a plane crash so soon?
Cecilia's heart was pounding, her hands were shaking, and she was filled with panic.
Seeing her pale face, Barry glanced at the TV screen and hesitated before saying, "Are you worried about him?"
The panicked Cecilia met his probing gaze.
Then, Cecilia said, "I'm sorry, Barry. I know I shouldn't be worried about him anymore, but it's a matter of life and death."
As she spoke, her eyes welled up with tears.
Cecilia was trying hard to control herself, but she couldn't because Daryl might have been in an accident.
Barry said considerately, "I understand. After all, you and he were once close. I believe he will be okay."
"Hopefully," Cecilia replied, trying hard to control her emotions. It was indeed inappropriate for her to be so concerned about her ex-boyfriend in front of her current boyfriend.
Then, Cecilia signaled the waiter for a new set of cutlery and said with a smile, "Let's eat. He has nothing to do with me anymore."
After saying this, Cecilia lowered her head to eat, but she knew her lips were trembling.
Barry didn't say anything more and also lowered his head to eat.
They barely spoke during the meal.
After dinner, Cecilia excused herself, saying she was a bit tired, and went back to her room to rest.
In fact, how could she sleep?
Tossing and turning, she finally couldn't control her worry and called Douglas.
Although it was close to midnight, Douglas quickly answered the phone.
"Miss Thorne?" Douglas's voice came through the phone.
Cecilia asked urgently, "Douglas, how is he?"
At that moment, there was a lot of noise on the phone, — crying, talking, and footsteps.
Douglas said, "The Fields family is now at the airport. The injured have been taken to the hospital, and the identities of the deceased are still being confirmed. Mr. Fields is not among the survivors from the plane."
Hearing Douglas's sorrowful words, her mind went blank!
No Daryl among the survivors? What does that mean? Does it mean he is either dead or injured?
Thinking of this, she felt as if a heavy stone was pressing on her heart, making it hard to breathe.
"How could this happen? Why did he go to Skyhaven?" After a moment of silence, Cecilia was almost going crazy.
"Mr. Fields has been in a bad mood these days, so he arranged to go to Skyhaven with friends to relax, but didn't expect this to happen," Douglas answered sadly.
"If you hear any news about him, please let me know immediately." she knew that saying anything more was useless, so she just said this and then hung up the phone in disappointment.
That night, she stared at the ceiling until dawn.
Her mind and eyes were filled with Daryl's face, which she couldn't get rid of. The next morning, she came out of the guest room with dark circles under her eyes.
Sitting in the restaurant, Cecilia didn't touch her breakfast.
Sitting across from her, Barry frowned and looked at her. Seeing her pale face, he naturally understood what was going on.
"Why aren't you eating?" Barry placed a plate with fried eggs in front of Cecilia.
