Chapter 391 Can't Stay Any Longer
"Linda, you need something?" Susan asked, eyeing Linda's back with a bit of caution.
Linda spun around, arms crossed, and shot back with a hint of attitude, "Susan, should I be throwing you a party for snagging the VP spot?"
Susan was caught off guard. 'Guess Mr. Bell already spilled the beans to Linda. No wonder she's ticked,' she thought.
"Did Mr. Bell tell you that?" Susan asked.
Linda let out a cold laugh. "Who else would have the guts to do that?"
Susan was about to say something, but Linda cut her off. "The guy I like is your ex. I've busted my butt for this job, and now you're here, messing up my career plans. Do you know how long I've been gunning for that VP spot? Mr. Bell promised me that if I nailed my current role, I'd be next in line. But now, just when there's an opening, you waltz in. Susan, I don't even know how to deal with you right now."
Linda rubbed her forehead, clearly agitated.
Susan frowned and said, "Linda, you've got it all wrong. I never wanted to compete with you."
"Maybe you didn't mean to, but here we are. Everything I wanted, you've taken." With that, Linda started packing her stuff, tossing her cup and personal items into a box.
"Linda, what are you doing?" Susan rushed over, seeing Linda's frantic packing her own stuffs.
"What am I doing? I'm quitting," Linda snapped.
Susan hesitated, then grabbed the box and said, "Linda, Mr. Bell just told me he wants to promote me next month, but he didn't even ask if I wanted it."
"Are you saying you'd turn down the VP spot?" Linda scoffed.
"I really don't want it. I'll go tell Mr. Bell right now that I'm not taking the job," Susan said firmly.
Linda stared at Susan, confused. "Susan, even though I can't stand you, I gotta admit, everyone should earn their place. So don't try to butter me up. If you're messing with me, I'm not someone to mess with."
Susan, genuinely, said, "Linda, I'm not dumb. The only reason Mr. Bell wants me as VP is because of Seb. If I stay in such a big role, it'll just make things hard for Seb. So, I'm not taking the VP spot at Pioneer Accounting Firm, and I'm planning to quit by the end of the month."
Linda stared at Susan, thinking it over. She realized Susan had a point.
"Are you serious?" Linda still seemed a bit skeptical.
Susan smiled. "My future title is gonna be Mrs. President of Prosperity Group. Why would I cling to a VP spot here? Don't worry."
With that, Susan patted Linda on the shoulder and walked out of the office.
Walking down the hallway, Susan touched her face and thought, 'Susan, what the heck were you thinking? Mrs. President of Prosperity Group? Seb's gotta agree to remarry you first, girl.'
Susan headed back to find Walter and told him she didn't feel ready for the VP gig. She said she needed more time to sharpen her skills in her current role, or else she'd just embarrass herself if she messed up.
Walter was shocked at first. He thought Susan was dissing his company, but after hearing her out, he finally relaxed.
Leaving Walter's office, Susan felt a pang of regret. 'Such a prime chance to shine, and I just tossed it away? But hey, if it ain't meant to be, it ain't meant to be,' she thought, diving back into her work.
Over the next couple of days, Susan pieced things together. It turned out that Ingrid had seen her and Seb getting into the same car. Then, Ingrid bumped into Leon and tried to get the scoop. Leon, of course, set the record straight, saying he had nothing to do with Susan and that she was Seb's wife. Ingrid spread the word at the office, and it caught Walter's attention.
The rumors about her and Leon had been a pain for Susan, so it was a relief to have them squashed. But what came next was a bit much. Ever since she turned down the VP offer, Walter had been showering her with care, sending fresh fruit and goodies from around the world almost daily. By the end of the month, her salary had doubled.
At first, it was cool, but soon her colleagues started treating her with this weird respect. At Pioneer Accounting Firm, anyone who crossed Susan was in for a rough time.
So, in the days that followed, Susan grew more and more unhappy at work. Her good work was praised, but no one dared criticize her if she slipped up. Susan felt like she couldn't keep working there.
One evening, Susan wrapped her arms around Seb's neck and said playfully, "Seb, I'm thinking about quitting."
Seb, lost in thought, was surprised. "Why would you quit all of a sudden?"
Susan noticed his distraction and pouted. "Mr. Bell doubled my salary and said there'd be more raises coming."
"Isn't that a good thing? Don't you love money?" Seb teased.
"Hey, who said I only love money? I have standards," Susan shot back.
"Well, it's his choice to give it to you. You didn't twist his arm," Seb laughed.
Susan pouted and said, "Now it feels like I'm just going to work to be adored. Whether I do a good job or not, no one cares, and they all kiss up to me. I really can't stay at Pioneer Accounting Firm any longer. If I do, I'll lose my mind!"
