Chapter 7
"You've been pregnant for five weeks and didn't know? What a careless mom. Take a rest, then handle the hospital admission. It'd be best if you could get your family to stay with you," the female doctor said, shaking her head as she walked away.
Pregnant for five weeks?
It took Susan a few minutes to process what was happening.
Staring at the report in her hand, she was on the verge of tears.
'That guy's a real piece of work. First, he made me lose $650, and now, after all these tests, it's another $1,000. And if that wasn't enough, he left me with a baby!'
Even though it was hard to accept, after thinking it over for hours, Susan decided to keep the baby. She just couldn't bring herself to end this little life.
Gritting her teeth, Susan decided to get admitted to protect the pregnancy. Luckily, it was Saturday, so she could take a few days off next week.
Susan called her best friend and colleague, Isabella, asking her to grab some clothes and necessities from her place and to tell Catherine she was on a sudden business trip to cover for her.
After sorting everything out, Susan settled in for the treatment to protect her pregnancy.
On Monday during lunch break, Isabella rushed over from the office to visit Susan.
"Did Wendy approve my leave?" Susan asked nervously as soon as she saw Isabella.
Wendy was known for saying, "Unless your parents are dead or you're getting a divorce, no one gets leave for trivial matters."
Isabella pulled out a leave slip and said, surprised, "I was thinking of an excuse for you, but as soon as I handed over the slip, Wendy just signed it and gave you a week off. She even said if you need more time, just ask."
Hearing this, Susan frowned. "Done, I'm probably the first one to get laid off."
"Don't be so negative," Isabella tried to comfort her.
"Well, if I get laid off, there's nothing I can do. I'll just leave it to fate!" Susan said lightly, though she was actually worried. If she got laid off, her whole family's livelihood would be in trouble.
"By the way, whose is this?" Isabella asked, pointing at Susan's belly in confusion.
Susan and Isabella were very close, so she didn't hide it from her. "Over a month ago, I went out, got drunk, and ended up with a male escort. I accidentally got pregnant!"
"You don't even know who the father is?" Isabella's eyes widened in shock.
"Not knowing is better. The child will have no ties in the future," Susan said simply.
"So, you're planning to be a single mom?" Isabella asked.
"I want to have this baby," Susan said, touching her still flat belly.
Isabella was stunned for a moment before she worriedly said, "Susan, the layoffs are coming soon. Is it really wise to choose to have a baby now, especially as a single mom?"
Susan replied, "I'll take it one step at a time. My mom raised me and my sister even when things were tough."
Isabella shook her head in disbelief.
Meanwhile, Leon was meticulously reporting today's news to Seb. Seb felt like a thunderbolt had struck his mind, leaving him momentarily at a loss.
After a few seconds of being stunned, Seb turned and took a cigarette from the pack on his desk. He then picked up a lighter to light it.
Perhaps a bit nervous, Seb tried several times, but the lighter failed to produce a flame.
Seeing this, Leon quickly stepped forward and took the lighter from Seb's hand. He struck the flint, and the lighter finally produced a flame. He stepped forward to light the cigarette in Seb's mouth.
Seb took a few deep drags and then walked to the floor-to-ceiling window, gazing at the distant scenery.
