Chapter 994 It's Not Easy Being the CEO's Wife
Leon had a rough night, and first thing in the morning, he took Isabella and Milo to the hospital.
Isabella noticed Zane looked really sick, but his mind was still sharp. He kept his eyes open, probably waiting for Leon to bring Milo to see him.
Right then, Isabella felt a wave of sadness. As people neared the end, they craved family more, but that kind of bond took everyday effort to maintain.
By now, Zane's world was probably full of helplessness. Finding out that the wife he'd been with for over ten years had schizophrenia must've been a huge blow. But not making sure Leon and his mom were settled before remarrying and having more kids was pretty messed up.
When Zane saw the one-month-old Milo, he cried tears of joy.
Even though Leon brought Milo to see Zane, he never called him "father" again. But Leon stayed with him in the hospital for two days and nights until he passed away.
In the days that followed, Isabella stayed home with Milo while Leon handled the funeral arrangements.
That evening, Leon walked into the bedroom, looking worn out.
Isabella, who'd been bored out of her mind these past few days, quickly went up to him and asked, "Is the funeral over?"
"Yeah," Leon nodded.
Leon was in a black suit and white shirt, his eyes bloodshot, and his jaw covered in stubble, looking totally exhausted.
No surprise there—Leon was the only one left in the Johnson Family during the three days of the funeral. Isabella could imagine how drained he was.
"How's Nora doing?" Isabella asked, frowning.
Leon replied, "She doesn't know he died. She's not in a good place mentally, so I'm not telling her to avoid upsetting her again."
"That's probably for the best," Isabella nodded.
Then Leon said, "He left a last wish before he died: to be buried with my mom after she passes away."
Hearing this, Isabella was stunned and then asked, "What about his deceased wife?"
Zane had married another woman back then and had a pair of kids, but they all died in a plane crash.
Leon sighed and answered, "He said he gave the best of himself to that woman in this life and felt guilty towards my mom. So after his death, he wanted to be with her to make up for his sins."
Hearing this, Isabella said softly, "After Nora dies, being alone would be too lonely."
Leon took a deep breath and said, "This is the most right thing he's done in his life."
Sensing that Leon still had some unresolved resentment, Isabella stepped forward and placed her hand on his chest, advising, "Everything is in the past now. We should look forward, right?"
At this moment, Leon smiled and held Isabella's shoulder. "You're right."
Hearing this, Isabella hugged Leon's waist, pressed her face against his chest, and asked softly, "You must be exhausted these past few days. Take a hot bath first."
After saying that, Isabella turned to run the bath for Leon.
At this moment, Leon grabbed Isabella's wrist. "No need, I have to leave soon!"
Hearing this, Isabella frowned and asked, "You just got back, where are you going?"
"Skyhaven," Leon replied.
"Skyhaven? What for?" Isabella was surprised.
Leon got serious. "I've started taking over the Johnson Corporation. There's a branch in Skyhaven, and my grandfather has a lot of assets there. I need to fly over and handle things."
Leon glanced at his watch. "The plane leaves in two hours. I came back to see you and pack a few clothes before heading out."
Isabella asked reluctantly, "How long will you be gone?"
"At least a week, maybe longer," Leon said, looking deeply at her.
Isabella felt a pang of sadness and threw herself into Leon's arms. She'd been looking forward to him finishing Zane's funeral, but now he was leaving again. She felt empty inside, having gotten used to his company. Without him, her world felt like it was falling apart.
Over the years, Isabella had few relatives around her. She was strong and independent, but since being with Leon, she felt like she couldn't live without him anymore.
Seeing her reluctance, Leon smiled. "I'll handle things in Skyhaven as quickly as I can and come back. Once I'm done, I'll spend a few days at home with you and Milo."
"Okay, be careful. I'll pack your things right away." Isabella quickly left his embrace, turned to the wardrobe, grabbed a suitcase, and started packing his clothes.
Seeing her thoughtful manner, Leon smiled, then walked to the bed, bent down to look at the sleeping Milo, gently pinched his little hand, and stared at him intently.
After Leon left, Isabella felt bored.
For the first two days, Leon called to check in, but then there was no news. Worried, Isabella called him twice, but both times a man claiming to be his secretary answered, saying Leon was very busy and couldn't take the call.
Isabella understood that taking over a large corporation came with many challenges, so she didn't want to bother him and waited patiently at home.
One day, Susan came to visit Isabella and Milo.
When Susan asked about Leon, Isabella couldn't help but complain, "He left for Skyhaven right after the funeral, taking only a few clothes. It's been almost a week, and he's only called twice. Now when I call, his secretary always answers."
Susan smiled. "Did you think being the wife of a CEO was easy?"
"I get it now, but Seb is with you every day. If this keeps up, once I stop breastfeeding, I'll go to Johnson Corporation and be his secretary," Isabella grumbled.
"Alright, Leon has just taken over the company's affairs, and he's under a lot of pressure. You should be more understanding," Susan advised.
Isabella calmed down. "I understand. It's just that sometimes I think it was better before. At least back then, he could be with me every day."
