Chapter 161 Heart-Wrenching Pain
The next morning, Susan and Isabella decided to go job hunting together. Even without the mood, they still have to earn money and carry on with life.
By noon, they were exhausted and took a break on a bench, ordering hot drinks.
Even though it was winter, the midday sun was warm, making them feel cozy. The hot drinks helped too.
Isabella, holding her drink, pouted and said, "Everyone says finding a job is tough, but I didn't think it would be this hard. We've been at it all morning and only found a few small companies hiring."
Susan took a sip and replied, "The economy's bad right now. Big companies are laying people off, so only small ones with high turnover are hiring."
"So, what do we do? Work for a small company?" Isabella asked, worried.
Susan smirked, "It's less than two months until New Year. We can get a temporary job for now. They say the economy might get better by spring, and there's a lot of turnover at the end of the year. Big companies might start hiring again after the holidays. Plus, if we pass our CPA exams, it'll help us get better jobs with higher pay."
Isabella nodded, then suddenly stared at Susan, asking, "You sound so professional. Who told you all this?"
Susan's heart skipped a beat. She thought of Seb's stern, handsome face. Was she just repeating what he had told her?
To cover up, Susan quickly said, "I've been job hunting for days, so I've picked up some insights. Otherwise, it would all be for nothing."
Isabella didn't think much of it and nodded, "You're right. Since it's just over a month until New Year, why don't we look for jobs selling cosmetics or high-end clothes? Retail is busy at the end of the year and needs temporary salespeople. Plus, we're young and pretty, which should help!"
Seeing Isabella's confidence, Susan smiled.
Just then, a commotion erupted in the crowd on the commercial street.
Susan and Isabella looked over and saw people staring at a huge TV screen on a building.
Curious, Susan looked at the screen and was stunned.
It was showing a huge wedding photo. Seb looked stern and handsome, and Cynthia was dazzling and beautiful.
Seb wore a black, well-tailored suit, and Cynthia was in a white off-shoulder wedding dress with a diamond-studded crown. The backdrop was a blue sea and sky, with the bride's veil fluttering in the wind, creating a beautiful scene.
Seeing the photo, Isabella stomped her foot and said, "What's with this? Do they have to flaunt their wedding photo like an ad? Are they really getting married?"
Susan knew Isabella was trying to defend her. She pulled Isabella back to her seat, forcing a smile despite her breaking heart.
"How they get married is their business, not ours," Susan said lightly, though she cared deeply inside.
Isabella, still fuming, muttered, "Susan, that couple won't last. Just wait, they'll be divorced in less than two years!"
"Alright," Susan said, pulling Isabella's arm to signal her to sit down.
Isabella noticed people watching and blushed, quickly sitting down.
The crowd kept talking.
"The wedding photo on the screen is gorgeous. Is it an ad?" a girl pointed at the screen.
Her friend laughed, "No, it's real! The CEO of Prosperity Group in Maple Valley is getting married."
The first girl crossed her arms, envious, "They rented such a big screen for their wedding photo? The bride is so lucky!"
"He's a company boss; he doesn't care about the money!"
"But it shows he values his bride. It must be true love!"
"Stop dreaming. It has nothing to do with us. Let's go!" The second girl pulled her friend away.
No matter how strong Susan tried to appear, she couldn't fool herself. It felt like a heavy stone was pressing on her chest, making it hard to breathe.
Seeing Susan's pale face, Isabella held her shoulders.
Susan glanced at Isabella, then hugged her tightly, unable to hold back any longer.
The girl's words echoed in her ears—Seb truly loved Cynthia!
Those words were like a knife, piercing her heart. Susan clutched her chest, feeling unbearable pain.
Isabella didn't know how to comfort her, so she just held her tightly.
Susan was grateful for Isabella's support; otherwise, she would have broken down.
She had thought the shadow of her heartbreak had faded, but she had overestimated her ability to heal. Seb's name seemed deeply embedded in her heart, not easily forgotten.
A few minutes later, Isabella let go of Susan and smiled. "That's enough for today. Let's go back. I'll cook something delicious for you. We can plan our strategy for tomorrow, focusing on high-end stores and malls. We can work for a month or so to earn some living expenses. How about that?"
Susan nodded and said, "Why don't you go back first? I want to be alone for a while."
Isabella frowned.
Knowing Isabella was worried, Susan forced a smile and said, "Don't worry, I won't do anything stupid. I'm still young and decent-looking. Better days are ahead for me."
Isabella knew Susan well, so she nodded, gave her a few words of advice, and then turned to leave.
