Chapter 867 Infinite Comfort
At that moment, Susan could fully sense Hugo's concern for her, which went beyond mere friendship and left her feeling deeply uneasy.
Hugo suddenly realized he messed up.
He scratched his head and said, "Sorry, Susan. I got too worked up. I heard the bell, and it sounded weird, not like my servant. When I checked next door and you weren't there, I freaked out. This place is huge, and it's like a ghost town at night. The servants are all downstairs. I was scared something happened to you, so..."
Susan felt bad. She was the one wandering around, making Hugo worry. He was just looking out for her, but she had misjudged him.
She quickly said, "Sorry for making you worry."
"As long as you're okay," Hugo said, finally relaxing and smiling.
"I'm not cold," Susan said, trying to give back the robe since Hugo was still shirtless.
Hugo stopped her, saying, "Women are more delicate than men. I'm actually feeling kinda hot right now!"
He struck a bodybuilder pose, making Susan smile and look away because it felt a bit awkward.
"There's a big patch of tulips over there, really pretty!" Susan pointed out the window.
Hugo walked up behind her, looking at the red and yellow flowers in the distance. "My grandmother was from Luminara. She loved tulips, so over sixty years ago, my grandfather planted these here."
Susan turned to Hugo, surprised. She remembered Hugo mentioning his grandmother was a Luminara, and he had a quarter Luminara blood, which made him love Luminara culture and women.
Seeing her surprise, Hugo smiled and said, "You kinda look like my grandmother. My grandfather went against the Royal Family to marry her. He loved her a lot. Sadly, she was in poor health and passed away early. He never remarried and stayed single until he died."
Susan frowned and said, "Your grandfather was really devoted."
"Yeah, the men in our family are all like that. My grandfather, my brother, all very devoted and faithful. Our family is super close. Even though we're noble, none of us have mistresses," Hugo said.
"What about you? Why aren't you married yet? Do you have someone you're into?" Susan asked.
Hugo scratched his head and shrugged, "I just haven't met the one I can be devoted to for life."
Susan smiled and said, "I think so too."
Hugo looked deeply at Susan, who was smiling beautifully in the morning light.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" Susan felt embarrassed under Hugo's gaze and looked down.
Hugo suddenly said, "There's something I don't know if I should say."
Susan thought, 'We've been hanging out for days, and Hugo hasn't asked about Seb at all. He's Seb's friend, so he probably knows about our situation.'
She looked up and said, "I think we're friends, so there's nothing off-limits."
"Of course we're friends, and you're a very important friend to me," Hugo said seriously.
"Are you going to talk about Seb?" Susan asked.
Hugo smiled and looked down. "You know everything."
"We've broken up," Susan said, looking at Hugo.
Hugo frowned, confused. "I don't get it. In Northstar City, you two were so in love. Why is he marrying someone else just a few months later? What happened? You guys have two kids, right?"
Susan's mood had been better, but Hugo's mention of Seb brought back the pain.
Seeing her gloomy expression, Hugo frowned and said, "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have brought it up."
Susan forced a smile. "Not mentioning it doesn't mean it didn't happen. Did you know he get married?"
Hugo replied, "I got his wedding invite a few days ago. The bride's name is Ellie."
"That's his secretary," Susan said.
Hugo's eyes widened. "Did they fall in love over time? Or was she a homewrecker?"
Susan glanced at Hugo, then looked out the window at the tulips. "Neither. Seb and I were never meant to be."
She stared at the flowers, feeling infinite sadness. But no matter how sad she was, she had to move on and take care of her kids.
Her eyes welled up with tears, and her vision of the flowers blurred.
Seeing her shoulders tremble, Hugo frowned and stepped forward, holding her shoulders.
Susan really needed a shoulder to lean on. She covered her mouth, trying not to cry out loud.
A strong arm gently embraced her.
She leaned lightly on his shoulder, tears falling onto Hugo's chest.
Hugo didn't say anything, just silently stayed with her, his hand stroking her back, giving her comfort.
In front of the castle window, a man and a woman leaned gently against each other, their faces full of sorrow, while the tulips swayed in the wind.
After a long time, Susan calmed down and realized she had lost her composure.
She quickly got up from Hugo's shoulder and stepped back, putting some distance between them.
"I'm sorry!" Susan apologized, her face still wet with tears.
Hugo smiled at her. "It's okay. I'm happy to give you some support."
Susan blushed, feeling awkward, especially since he was still shirtless.
She turned and ran along the path Hugo had come from.
