Chapter 286 Emotional Agitation
The nurse stayed at the ward for like an hour, helping Susan pump out all her milk.
After that grueling hour, Susan was soaked in sweat. She slumped back against the headboard, panting and thinking, 'Man, no joke, being a mom is tough work.' She couldn't help but think of Catherine.
Ever since she and George called off the wedding, Catherine had been pretty distant. Susan was usually busy with Spring, so she hardly ever got to visit Catherine. She'd make a few calls here and there, but Catherine was always cold, which bummed Susan out. Lately, they hadn't talked at all.
Feeling a bit guilty, Susan thought, 'Once I'm better, I gotta go home and apologize to Mom.'
Just as the nurse left, a small figure came running in like the wind. "Mommy!"
Seeing Hayden rush in, Susan's face lit up, and all her discomfort seemed to vanish.
"Mommy, you feeling better?" Hayden leaned on the bed, his little face all serious.
"Much better," Susan said with a smile, gently stroking Hayden's cheek, her eyes full of love.
Hearing that, Hayden finally relaxed and a big smile spread across his face. "Mommy, don't get sick again, okay? It scares me."
"Okay, I promise," Susan nodded, still smiling.
Seb walked in behind Hayden. He finally got how much pain Susan had been in and felt pretty bad for not understanding before.
Hayden and Susan chatted a bit more. Seb stepped up, ruffled Hayden's hair, and said, "Hey buddy, let Mommy rest now. I'll take you home."
Hayden pouted, "No, I wanna stay with Mommy."
"Come on, be good. Mommy needs to rest to get better, okay? Otherwise, she'll stay sick longer," Seb said, trying to sound stern.
Hayden, though reluctant, looked at Susan and sensibly said, "Okay, Mommy. I'll go home and come back tomorrow."
"You're the best, Hayden," Susan smiled, touching his chubby little face.
Susan then looked up and met Seb's eyes.
"How's Spring?" She'd been stuck in bed all night and had no idea how Spring was doing.
Seb reassured her, "Don't worry; Mary knows her stuff. Spring's eating and sleeping well. By the time you're outta here, she should be weaned."
Susan nodded. "Thanks for having Mary take care of Spring for a few days."
"Got it. I'll take Hayden home now. I hired a nurse for you, and I'll be back later," Seb said, taking Hayden's hand and heading out.
"Wait," Susan called out.
Seb turned back, raising an eyebrow, looking at her intently.
"Spring's got a stubborn streak. Tell Mary to be extra patient," Susan said, still worried even though she trusted Mary. After all, Spring was too small.
"Okay," Seb nodded, giving Susan one last look before leaving with Hayden.
In the days that followed, Seb brought Hayden to see Susan every morning and showed her electronic photos of Spring. Seeing that Spring was doing well, Susan felt relieved and focused on getting better in the hospital.
There was this female nurse looking after Susan, and she was feeling pretty comfy. She also noticed Seb was keeping his distance this time around.
Every morning, Seb would bring Hayden to the hospital for about half an hour, then he'd use the excuse that Hayden had to go to preschool and he had to get to work, and he'd bounce.
Honestly, this setup was perfect—no awkwardness for her, no embarrassment for Seb.
This was probably the best way to handle things. Seb and she co-parented Hayden and Spring, but they didn't really interact.
Even though Susan sometimes felt a bit empty inside, wasn't this what she wanted from the start?
After this hospital stint, Susan realized how crucial health was, especially now that she had Hayden and Spring to look after. She couldn't afford to get sick. So, in the hospital, she strictly followed the doctor's orders, eating and drinking right, hoping to get better fast.
A week later, Susan's mastitis was cleared up, and she was finally ready to go home.
That morning, Seb brought Hayden to pick her up from the hospital.
Leon was driving, Seb was in the front seat, and Susan and Hayden were in the back.
The whole ride was pretty quiet, except for Hayden's chatter. The adults didn't say a word to each other. Susan thought it was a bit weird, but with Hayden around, it wasn't too tense.
When they got home, Leon brought in the stuff from the hospital, and Seb followed, holding Hayden's hand.
Not seeing Spring right away, Susan frowned and turned to Seb, asking, "Didn't you say Mary would bring Spring back?"
Seb didn't answer her directly but turned to Leon, "Leon, take Hayden downstairs and wait for me."
Leon got the hint and stepped forward, taking Hayden's hand, "Hey buddy, wanna go downstairs and play?"
"Okay." Hayden glanced at Seb and Susan, then added, "I know Daddy and Mommy have something to talk about, so I need to leave."
Susan frowned, Seb rolled his eyes at Hayden, and Leon chuckled, then took Hayden away.
Once they left, the house went silent.
"I need to talk to you about something," Seb said seriously to Susan.
Susan got anxious because she had a feeling she knew what it was about.
"Seb, are you planning to take Spring away from me? If so, I'm telling you, no way. Spring has to stay with me!" Susan cut in.
Seb frowned, "Susan, calm down and let me finish, okay?"
"I don't want to hear it. If you're trying to take Spring, I won't agree," Susan said stubbornly.
"No one's taking Spring away, not even me. I just want to talk about how we can better raise Spring and make things easier for you," Seb tried to explain.
But Susan wasn't listening. She was always scared Seb would try to take Spring. Spring had never been away from her since birth, and Susan wasn't about to let that change.
