Chapter 98 A Chance Encounter
Even though George had strong arms, Susan still felt they weren't as powerful as Seb's. George's words were kind, but they didn't give her the same sense of security Seb did.
Thinking about it, Susan shook her head. Why was she still hung up on Seb? She needed to forget him.
Despite her determination, she touched her lips, remembering Seb's forceful kiss from a few days ago.
They soon stepped onto the red carpet and entered the mansion.
A couple in their sixties stood at the door to greet guests.
The man, Willard, looked energetic despite his white hair. The woman, Helen Hill, wore a deep red dress and gemstone jewelry, exuding a noble and kind aura.
Their manners were impeccable, and their frequent smiles showed a deep, harmonious relationship that others envied.
When George and Susan reached them, George bowed politely and said, "Mr. Ramirez, I wish you good health. Mrs. Ramirez, I wish you eternal youth!"
"George, your words are getting sweeter. Who's this young lady?" Helen asked, scrutinizing Susan.
Helen's sharp gaze made Susan a bit embarrassed, as if Helen could see right through her.
"Her name is Susan, she's my friend," George said vaguely.
Susan glanced at him, wondering why he didn't just say I was his employee. Was there some taboo?
Helen suddenly pointed at George and teased, "You better behave, especially since Vivian Rogers isn't here!"
"Mrs. Ramirez, please spare me today!" George stepped forward and held Helen's hand, his eyes pleading.
Susan didn't have time to think about who Vivian was. She quickly smiled and said, "Mr. Ramirez, Mrs. Ramirez, I hope I can attend your 50th wedding anniversary party in ten years!"
"You really know how to talk. I like you!" Helen laughed, pointing at Susan.
"I'll bring her to visit you another day," George said, then led Susan into the mansion, as many guests were still arriving.
The banquet hall was large and clearly designed for parties. The enormous crystal chandelier was incredibly luxurious. Guests in elegant attire chatted in small groups, while waiters carrying various foods and drinks moved through the crowd.
George and Susan each took a glass of red wine, sipping and chatting.
"You seem to know Mr. and Mrs. Ramirez well?" Susan asked.
Willard and Helen were a household name in both the political and business circles of Maple Valley. Although George was a prominent young lawyer, he was still young and had only recently opened a law firm. He shouldn't have much interaction with people like Willard and Helen.
George smiled and said, "The Ramirez family and our Anderson family have been friends for generations. Mr. and Mrs. Ramirez had a good relationship with my grandparents, so our families are very close!"
Susan nodded, but then her heart skipped a beat.
The Ramirez and Anderson families were old friends. Given the importance of today's event, Seb, a more influential member of the Anderson family, would likely be there.
Thinking about this, Susan felt flustered. She really didn't want to see Seb.
"What's wrong?" George asked, noticing her pale face and gently putting his arm around her shoulder.
"Nothing, just a bit dizzy," Susan lied.
"Want to sit over there?" George suggested.
That sounded like a good idea. Sitting in a corner might help her avoid Seb.
Susan nodded, and George supported her arm as they walked toward a corner seat.
But as luck would have it, they had only taken a few steps when two people walked toward them.
Susan saw them and realized there was no way to avoid them. She felt awkward.
Seb, in a black suit, and Cynthia, in a red mermaid gown, approached. Seb's eyes were coldly fixed on George's hand supporting Susan, while Cynthia, holding Seb's arm, stared sharply at Susan.
Their gazes made Susan very uneasy. She straightened her back, thinking, 'They wronged me. Why should I feel awkward? I won't let them look down on me.' So she immediately perked up.
"Seb, Cynthia, you're here too?" George greeted them while supporting Susan.
Seb ignored George, looking elsewhere.
George felt awkward but didn't mind. He assumed Seb was angry because he believed George was messing around with women and hadn't had a chance to explain.
Cynthia sneered, "George, you really are something, bringing Seb's ex-wife to Mr. Ramirez's party. Are you trying to embarrass our family?"
George was stunned. He turned to look at Susan, then asked Cynthia, "What do you mean, ex-wife?"
"You didn't know? I thought you wouldn't do something so inappropriate," Cynthia said in surprise.
Susan gave Cynthia a cold look, then turned to George and said, "She's right. I am Seb's ex-wife."
George was too shocked to speak. He looked at Seb, who was still looking elsewhere, and suddenly understood why Seb had been so agitated that day. Susan's ex-husband was Seb?
"See, she admitted it. If you care about the Anderson family's reputation, you should take her away and stop embarrassing us!" Cynthia, seeing Susan as a threat, spoke without restraint, aiming to make Seb hate Susan even more.
Susan looked at George, her eyes telling him that if he wanted her to leave, she would comply. She didn't want to embarrass George.
After the initial shock, George firmly took Susan's hand and said, "You are my date tonight. No one but Mr. Ramirez has the right to ask you to leave!"
Hearing this, Susan pressed her lips together, grateful that George didn't listen to Cynthia.
George then directly said to Cynthia, "If I remember correctly, you are not yet part of the Anderson family, right? So you have no right to speak on their behalf.."
