Chapter 387 Something On Her Mind
"Actually," Leon started to say something, but Seb cut him off, "I'm feeling pretty good about where we're at. Even if we don't tie the knot again right away, Susan, the kids, and I are still a happy crew."
Susan felt a cold shiver run down her spine and her nose started to sting. She looked up at the ceiling, trying to keep her tears in check.
"Mom..." Spring, who was in her arms, suddenly piped up.
Susan quickly covered Spring's mouth and hurried downstairs.
Once she got downstairs, her mind went blank, and she felt totally lost. She saw Mary busy in the kitchen and walked in with Spring in her arms.
"Mary, Seb and Mr. Johnson are talking about something. I'm taking Spring to the park for a bit," Susan said before bolting out the door.
As soon as she stepped outside, she couldn't hold back her tears anymore.
Worried that Kathy, who was picking up Hayden, might see her, Susan quickly headed towards the nearby park.
She always thought Seb would be all about remarrying her, giving her that dream wedding, letting her wear that perfect dress, and having Hayden and Spring as their flower kids, so they could live together openly and legit.
Susan wasn't one to fuss over formalities, but a guy giving a girl a formal status was definitely a sign of love and responsibility.
But she didn't expect Seb to think their current setup was just fine and had no plans to remarry her anytime soon.
Susan had no clue what was going on in Seb's head, but from her perspective, she just couldn't deal with it.
Even though Seb had said something kinda reassuring afterward, like even if they weren't remarried, they were still a family now.
A marriage certificate might be a drag for two people who didn't love each other, but for a couple in love, it was definitely a vow, a guarantee, and an expression of love.
Susan felt super upset and wanted to go back and ask Seb what he really thought.
But she ultimately ditched the idea because she didn't want Seb to think she was desperate to marry him, nor did she want him to marry her reluctantly. Those were things she couldn't stand.
Susan walked until she was exhausted, then plopped down on a park bench with Spring in her arms.
Even though Spring couldn't talk clearly yet, she was pretty sharp. Seeing Susan cry, she reached out to wipe her tears. "Don't cry!"
Seeing Spring's big, round eyes staring at her timidly, Susan's heart almost shattered.
For a moment, Susan felt super guilty for not keeping her emotions in check in front of her kid.
Then, she quickly wiped her tears and gently said to Spring, "Spring, be good. I'm not crying."
Spring was really well-behaved this time, sitting quietly on the bench with Susan, looking at the distant scenery. She didn't ask to play on the slide or run around but stayed quietly with Susan.
Susan gazed at the distant sunset, feeling all sorts of emotions. She didn't know how she was going to live peacefully in Seb's villa in the future because she was just the mother of his two kids and his ex-wife.
"Daddy!" At that moment, Spring suddenly pointed into the distance and called out.
Susan looked up and, sure enough, saw a guy in a black suit heading their way.
She quickly wiped her eyes, hoping Seb wouldn't notice she'd been crying.
When Seb got closer, Susan stood up.
Seb walked right up to the bench, scooped up Spring, and then looked at Susan.
Seb asked, "Everything cool with you and the kids?"
Susan nodded. "Yeah, we're good."
Seb studied her for a second, then touched her cheek and frowned. "Why are your eyes all red?"
"Just got some sand in them earlier," Susan lied quickly.
"Yeah, the wind's been crazy lately," Seb said, then put his arm around her shoulder. "Hayden's back. Let's head home for dinner."
"Okay," Susan replied, feeling a bit down, and followed him back home.
Later that evening, after Seb had showered, he climbed into bed and wrapped his arm around Susan's waist.
Susan had her back to him, pretending to be asleep.
"Still faking it? I've been gone a week. Don't you miss me?" Seb whispered in her ear.
Realizing she couldn't keep up the act, Susan bit her lip. "Of course I missed you."
Sensing her lack of enthusiasm, Seb flipped over, pinning her beneath him, and looked down at her in the dim light. "You feeling okay? You seemed off during dinner."
"No, just work stress, I guess," Susan avoided his gaze and made up an excuse.
Hearing this, Seb's eyes filled with concern. "Then you should rest up tonight. Tomorrow, I'll have Kathy make some nourishing soup for you. You got three days to get your energy back, and then we can have some fun."
"Get away!" Susan blushed, pushed him away, and turned her back to him.
Seeing her blush, Seb smiled, then lay back on his pillow, closing his eyes but still holding her hand.
Maybe Seb was tired from his travels, as Susan soon heard his even breathing.
Susan turned to look at Seb's chiseled face, gazing at him for a long time before letting out a soft sigh.
A few days later, on a weekend afternoon, Susan met up with Isabella for a chat.
"Why are you out in the middle of the day? Not at home with the kids?" Isabella asked, putting down her bag.
Susan gave a helpless smile. "I came out to buy something and felt bored, so I asked you out for coffee."
Hearing this, Isabella laughed. "Your life is so full and happy now. When do you ever feel bored?"
"I just missed you and wanted to talk. Is that not okay?" Susan stirred her coffee with a spoon.
"What's up? You seem to have something on your mind," Isabella observed Susan closely, noticing her lack of energy.
"Nothing, just feeling a bit tired lately," Susan replied.
At that moment, Isabella's sharp eyes noticed a box peeking out of Susan's bag. She reached over, picked it up, and frowned when she saw it. "Birth control pills?"
"Give it back," Susan snatched the box back, unwrapped it, and put the pills into her bag.
"Are you on birth control?" Isabella asked.
"Yeah," Susan nodded.
"Is it because you don't want kids, or Seb doesn't?" Isabella pressed.
"I don't know what he thinks. It's my own decision," Susan answered flatly.
