Chapter 153 Deception
For a moment, Susan's heart raced. She feared that Seb might have been in a car accident or some other mishap on the way, so she quickly turned and vamoosed.
Susan walked along the road from the Vital Records Office to the Prosperity Group building, looking around anxiously, but she didn't see any vehicles involved in an accident.
At this point, Susan sighed in relief. After all, it was good that there was no car accident. Maybe Seb was delayed by something important at the last minute.
She took out her phone and saw that it was almost noon. She had been walking in high heels for nearly an hour, and her feet were starting to hurt, so she found a bench for pedestrians to rest and sat down.
Looking up at the towering Prosperity Group building and then at the bustling traffic and crowds around her, Susan frowned.
Where on earth did Seb go? Why couldn't she reach him by phone, and why wasn't he responding to WhatsApp? What could be more important than their marriage registration?
Susan dialed Seb's phone number countless times, but still couldn't get through.
As the winter sun began to slant, her phone suddenly rang.
Susan immediately answered the call, anxiously saying, "Seb, where are you..."
Before she could finish, Isabella's anxious voice came through. "Susan, what are you doing? Why haven't I been able to reach you?"
Hearing Isabella's voice, the joy in Susan's heart instantly vanished. She replied, "I've been trying to call Seb, but I can't get through. That's probably why the line was busy."
Isabella didn't ask further and instead went straight to the point, "What's going on with you and Seb?"
"What do you mean?" Susan asked, puzzled.
"Didn't you say you were going to the Vital Records Office to get married with Seb today?" Isabella asked anxiously.
"Yes, what's wrong?" Susan felt Isabella's question was a bit odd.
"What's wrong? Do you know that Seb is currently holding a press conference, publicly announcing that he's going to marry Cynthia?" Isabella's voice was sharp.
"What did you say?" Isabella's words left Susan stunned.
How could this be? Isabella must be joking, but this went too far. She wouldn't joke about something like this!
Seeing that Susan was also in the dark, Isabella's tone softened. "Susan, where are you right now?"
"I'm right outside the Prosperity Group building. Seb said he would marry me today, but I couldn't find him, so I came here to check. Even Leon doesn't know where he is." Susan continued to explain, but she felt a bit uneasy. Was what Isabella said true?
If it wasn't true, then where was Seb?
His marrying Cynthia was absolutely impossible. Cynthia had already gone to Averlake, hadn't she?
"Susan, wait for me. I'll be right down!" Isabella said and hung up the phone.
Susan sat on the bench, looking at the endless stream of traffic, her brows tightly furrowed.
Although she didn't believe what Isabella had said, her heart was still uneasy. What was going on?
A few minutes later, Susan saw Isabella walking out of the Prosperity Group building. She quickly stood up and waved at Isabella, who then ran over.
Isabella looked Susan up and down, hesitating as if she found it hard to speak.
Normally, Isabella was quick to speak her mind. Seeing her act so strangely, Susan grabbed her hand and asked in confusion, "What's going on? Tell me quickly!"
At that moment, Susan knew Isabella wasn't making things up; there had to be a reason.
Isabella, unable to hold back, decided to tell the truth despite fearing it would hurt Susan.
"See for yourself." Isabella opened her phone and showed Susan the Prosperity Group employee group chat.
This group wasn't an official work group but was created by a high-ranking executive at Prosperity Group to foster camaraderie among employees. It usually contained information to enhance relationships and company culture. Susan had been in the group before but had left after resigning.
Susan suspiciously took the phone and saw a video. She tapped to play it.
Immediately, a solemnly decorated conference room appeared on the screen, with many reporters taking photos. It looked like a press conference was about to start.
Soon, amidst the noise, a handsome man in a black suit walked into the frame, accompanied by a beautiful woman holding his arm.
Their appearance caused a flurry of camera flashes, and seeing them made Susan's face turn pale.
In the video, Seb looked stern, while Cynthia was radiant. Seeing they together, Susan knew something was wrong. Her hand trembled as she held the phone.
"This was posted by a high-ranking executive in the group chat over half an hour ago. The entire Prosperity Group is in an uproar because of this video," Isabella said, frowning at the stunned Susan.
Soon, the video showed the media interviewing Seb and Cynthia.
"Mr. Anderson, you invited the media here today. Do you have an important announcement to make?"
"Mr. Anderson, who is this beautiful lady beside you?"
"Mr. Anderson, do you have good news to share with us?"
Facing the reporters, Seb remained stern, without a trace of a smile, while Cynthia beside him was radiant, smiling continuously with an air of pride and triumph.
Seb took the microphone and addressed the media briefly, "Everyone, I indeed have an announcement to make today. This is Cynthia Phillips, my long-time love. After careful consideration, we have decided to get married soon. Since Prosperity Group is launching a new project today, I thought it would be a good opportunity to share this happy news with you all!"
As soon as he finished speaking, the room erupted in noise, chaos, and cheers, and the video ended.
Susan stared at the phone screen, unable to believe it was real. She replayed the video several times before accepting the truth. It wasn't a rumor; it was real.
Cynthia hadn't gone to Averlake. Seb had been lying to her all along.
Why would Seb do this? If he didn't love her, he should have let her go. Why did he have to hurt her so deeply? Was this all part of Seb's plan?
Cynthia's radiant smile on the screen felt like a knife to Susan's heart, making her clutch her chest in pain.
