Chapter 331 Struggling to Move Forward
Susan was all paranoid, thinking Linda would come after her and block her from getting that permanent gig. But turned out, she was just trippin'. Linda ain't the petty type; otherwise, she wouldn't be bossing it up at such a young age.
At first, Susan thought she could just bounce, but then Linda switched gears. "Mrs. Anderson, it's just us now. Be real with me. Are you planning to stick around at Pioneer Accounting Firm for the long haul? If you just came here to get a taste of the grind or to prove something, now that you're a permanent employee, mission accomplished, right?"
Susan's brow furrowed a bit. She thought, 'Looks like Linda's still salty. After all, she's a woman too, and her thing with Seb isn't just for show; she's probably got real feelings for him. Now, she's throwing shade, totally different from her usual self.'
Even though Susan didn't want to kiss up to Linda, she also didn't want to get dragged through the mud, especially since she and Seb were totally done.
So, Susan flashed a gentle smile and said, "Linda, I think you got it twisted. I'm not Mrs. Anderson anymore."
Linda frowned, hesitated for a sec, then sneered, "I remember you telling me when you first got here that you were raising kids solo after your divorce. Were you hiding something back then? Should I call it a sneaky move?"
Seeing Linda didn't get it, Susan got serious and said, "Linda, every word I said was legit. I divorced Seb ages ago and have been flying solo with a kid."
Linda stared at Susan for a few seconds, then blurted out, "You two are divorced?"
Thinking back to when Seb said Susan was the mother of his kids, it all clicked.
Susan nodded.
Linda suddenly grinned as she still had some hope.
Then, Linda said, "Sorry, I misjudged you. Thought you were playing me."
"Maybe you misunderstood," Susan replied with a slight smile.
From Linda's face, Susan could tell Linda was really into Seb.
'Seb's just a player, flirting around with zero responsibility,' Susan cursed in her head.
Linda then smiled and said, "Alright, we're cool now. Go back to work. If you need anything or have ideas, hit me up."
"Thanks." Susan said and walked out of Linda's office.
Susan finally exhaled. One less enemy to worry about. Knowing she was Seb's ex, Linda was way more chill with her since she wasn't a threat.
Back at her desk, Susan sat down and glanced up, spotting Elliott working away at his computer.
His face was still a mess, bruises everywhere. The female colleagues around couldn't help but giggle at his sorry state.
Susan shook her head, thinking, 'Serves him right for being a jerk. Seb actually did something good for once.'
After a day's grind, Susan noticed Elliott was like a whole new person. He was super quiet, didn't even glance her way, and definitely didn't harass her like before. He wasn't even cracking jokes with the other ladies.
When Elliott hit the restroom, the female employees joked that he had really turned over a new leaf.
Near the end of the day, Fiona called Susan into her office.
Susan sat across from Fiona, knowing this was probably about her permanent position.
Sure enough, Fiona slid a contract across the desk. "Linda's already told HR you're officially a permanent employee starting today. This is the contract between you and Pioneer Accounting Firm. If you're cool with it, sign here, and starting next month, you'll get the permanent employee salary and all the perks."
Susan frowned. She didn't expect the contract to land on Fiona's desk so fast. Honestly, she wasn't ready to lock herself into a long-term gig at Pioneer.
Seeing Susan hesitate, Fiona leaned back in her leather chair and smiled. "Linda thinks you're top-notch and told me to mentor you well. Honestly, Susan, I really admire you. Even though you've been separated from Mr. George Anderson and Mr. Seb Anderson for so long, they still go out of their way to look out for you."
Susan was stunned.
Seb had beaten up Elliott, talked to Linda, and pressured Dominic; she knew all that. But George too?
Seb and George didn't get along. They wouldn't team up. So, George must've acted on his own?
Seeing Susan stay quiet, Fiona continued, "From what I know, you're raising a kid alone and life's tough. You need a stable job, right? I get that you think we have beef, and you're scared I'll make things hard for you. If that's the only reason, you can ask Linda to transfer you to another group. We've got plenty of groups; you can't have beef with every group leader, right?"
Susan frowned. She didn't get Fiona's angle. Fiona probably wouldn't be so nice as to really let her switch another group.
But Susan didn't want to. If she did, the new team leader would think she was high-maintenance. Fiona, being sneaky, would definitely spread rumors, making her life just as hard in the new team.
So, she wasn't falling for Fiona's trick.
Seeing Susan still quiet, Fiona said, "Actually, now that Linda's got her eye on you, even if you work under me, I won't mess with you unless your work sucks. I think you can handle this job, right?"
As soon as Fiona finished, Susan grabbed a pen and quickly signed her name on the contract.
Fiona looked a bit shocked. After signing, Susan looked up at Fiona and said, "I'm not switching groups. I'm staying right here!"
