Chapter 454 The Mother-in-Law and Daughter-in-Law Relationship

In the evening, Seb rolled up to pick Susan from work, just like always.

Once she hopped in the car, Susan noticed Seb looked kinda beat and asked, "Rough day?"

"Yeah, just got back from the funeral home," Seb said.

Susan's face scrunched up. "You were at the funeral home all day?"

"Had some business buddies there, so I stuck around. Plus, there was some drama at the funeral home, and George was there to help sort it out," Seb explained.

"What kind of drama? Does it have anything to do with Sophia and Amelia?" Susan asked, confused.

Seb grinned and squeezed her hand. "You really got a sixth sense."

Susan rolled her eyes. "Dominic's dead, so of course Sophia and Amelia would want a piece of the pie. When my grandpa was on his deathbed, they caused a scene with James, but Grandpa was smart and donated everything to charity. He knew that no matter who got the inheritance, James and they wouldn't let that person live in peace."

"But this time, they're in deeper trouble. Not only do they get nothing, but they also have to deal with a huge debt," Seb said.

Susan frowned. "But they can't pay it back. Won't the debt just get wiped out in bankruptcy?"

Seb nodded. "The company's already in bankruptcy proceedings. After the bankruptcy, Dominic's assets are in the red, and the debts Sophia and Amelia racked up will be included. This wipes out their massive debt, but their credit's shot. No more living large, no high expenses, not even fancy dinners."

"That's like a death sentence for them," Susan said, knowing how much Sophia and Amelia loved to flaunt their wealth. Now, they'd have to live like regular folks.

Seb went on, "The banks and investment companies got wind of Dominic's death right away and froze all his assets, including his luxury stuff. Sophia and Amelia were too slow. Their high-end clothes, jewelry, and other luxury items are all frozen, including their bank accounts. So now they're homeless and causing a ruckus at the funeral home."

Susan couldn't help but smirk. "They tore families apart, turned them father and son against each other, and now they've caused Dominic's death. This is karma!"

Seeing Susan still upset, Seb put his arm around her shoulder and smiled. "They're down and out now, not worth stressing over. By the way, I got some good news for you."

"What good news?" Susan decided to drop the whole Sophia and Amelia thing, not wanting it to ruin her mood.

"My folks are coming to Maple Valley in a couple of days!" Seb said, grinning from ear to ear.

Susan's heart skipped a beat.

To be honest, Todd was a nice and easygoing guy, but Carol was a tough nut to crack. Susan still held a grudge against her, so she couldn't really be happy about it.

"Our wedding's still a month away. Why are they coming so early?" Susan asked, trying to be tactful.

Seb replied, "They said they wanted to see their grandkids and help us get ready for the wedding."

Susan nodded, knowing she couldn't stop them from coming to Maple Valley.

Seb kept going, "Since Dad retired, he's been pretty chill, but Mom can't handle it, so they've been bickering a lot. She just got back from a trip abroad to unwind. They always argue at home, so I thought inviting them over might help smooth things out."

"Dad's retirement was the best outcome, right? Why's Mom still not happy?" Susan knew Todd was lucky to retire without any drama; otherwise, he might've ended up in prison.

Seb sighed. "Mom was a knockout, smart, and super capable when she was younger, but she's really strong-willed and cares a lot about status. She was used to being treated like a big shot's wife, so now that Dad's retired, she can't deal with it."

"Yeah, I get that. It's tough to adjust when you're used to being on top," Susan nodded.

Seb suddenly grinned. "So, Mom's in a bad mood and finds everything annoying. When she comes, please be patient with her!"

Susan's heart skipped a beat.

No wonder he was talking about Carol's flaws in front of her. He wanted her to be more patient with Carol.

Actually, Carol was Seb's mom, and Seb was the man she loved and the father of her kids. Even if Carol was a bit harsh, she'd still be patient and respectful.

But what Carol did to her back then was too much. She not only teamed up with Cynthia to mess with her but also caused her child to be born prematurely. How could she let go of that grudge?

Seeing Susan stay quiet for a while, Seb held her hand and smiled. "You don't need to be too nervous. You're my wife now, the mother of our two kids. Mom won't be too harsh. She just has a sharp tongue."

Susan knew this wasn't the time to be stubborn. If she clashed with Carol, Seb would think she was being immature and disrespectful, which wouldn't be good for her.

So, she quickly smiled and said, "Don't worry. I'll be patient with Mom. After all, she's your mother and the kids' grandma. I should be respectful to her."

Seb smiled and pulled her into his arms, stroking her head. "I know you're not only a good wife but also a good mom and a good daughter-in-law!"

Susan nestled in Seb's arms, her eyes showing a hint of helplessness and sadness.

She thought she and Seb could talk about anything, but today she had to put on an act in front of him. She was very reluctant but had no choice.

If she told Seb about what happened back then, he wouldn't believe her without proof, and he'd think she was being petty and holding a grudge against Carol for not approving of their relationship.

So she could only bury the past in her heart for now and keep the peace when Carol arrived.

She wasn't one to hold grudges. After all, Carol was Seb's mom. If Carol genuinely treated her well in the future, Susan would forgive the past hurts. Of course, she hoped for that.
