Chapter 40

"What the heck is going on? Spill it already!" The female colleagues were all ears.

Susan glanced at Brooklyn, just as confused.

Brooklyn said, "I just saw Ms. Hernandez, and guess who was there again? Amelia. She was demanding to see Mr. Anderson, but Ms. Hernandez shut her down, saying he didn't have time for her."

"That's old news. Amelia's been chasing Mr. Anderson forever," Aria sneered.

Susan frowned. 'Wasn't Seb getting along with Amelia recently? Why the sudden cold shoulder? Did he find someone new?' The thought made her uneasy.

Brooklyn chuckled, "And get this, Amelia was holding a magazine, crying and asking Ellie if Mr. Anderson was really married and who his wife was. Isn't that hilarious? She's practically a semi-public prostitute and still dreaming of becoming Mrs. Anderson!"

Everyone disliked the arrogant Amelia, so they all shook their heads and laughed at Brooklyn's story.

Susan felt a wave of satisfaction. She could almost picture Amelia's devastated face.

Amelia was delusional. Wanting to marry Seb? With her personality, Seb would have to be crazy to marry her.

Of course, James married Sophia, who was just as bad as Amelia, and even left Catherine and their family. He must have been out of his mind too. But after all these years, James still seemed smugly content, leaving Susan speechless about the "cuckolded" James.

Finally, it was time to leave work. Susan and Isabella walked out of the office together.

Once they were alone, Isabella teased, "Hey, do you think Seb did that magazine interview and admitted he was married just to get rid of Amelia?"

Susan stared at her in shock. She hadn't thought of that. 'Right, Amelia should be aggressively pursuing Seb. Could it be that Seb found it hard to reject Amelia, so he came up with this idea to present himself as married?'

It was said that the teacher who had taught both Amelia and Seb was now very pleased with Amelia, and that teacher had taken great care of Seb back then. So, if the teacher spoke well of Amelia, Seb couldn't reject her too harshly. 'Was that why Seb came up with this idea? So, Seb had his moments of helplessness too,' she thought.

"Who knows? That's his business, and it has nothing to do with me," Susan said, feeling a bit disheartened about Seb. She had never been enthusiastic about him.

"Hey, Seb is your husband, okay?" Isabella reminded her.

Susan pursed her lips and gave a bitter smile. "To me, he's just the father of my child."

"Actually, I think Seb is quite special to you. Now that you are legally married, you could give it a try. What if it turns into something real? Besides, you have a child together. Even if it doesn't work out, you have nothing to lose!" Isabella tried to persuade Susan.

Susan rolled her eyes. "What I would lose is my most precious self-respect, okay?"

"Is self-respect worth anything?" Isabella scoffed.

Self-respect might not be worth much for the poor, but Susan still tried to maintain her dignity in front of Seb. For some reason, she just didn't want to bow down to him or be looked down upon.

Walking into the house, Susan called out while changing her shoes, "Mom, I'm back."

Catherine, wearing an apron and holding a spatula, poked her head out of the kitchen. "Hungry? Dinner's almost ready."

Susan washed her hands and started setting the table. Catherine placed the dishes down and smiled. "Susan, this Saturday is Paul Wilson's wedding. You should come with me to give a gift and congratulate him."

Susan frowned.

She got along well with Charles and Paul, but James's family had patched things up with Charles's family, likely due to Paul's bride, Shirley Wright, hailing from a notable background. Consequently, James's family had ingratiated themselves once more, behaving as if their past rift with Abigail never occurred. They now treated Abigail with utmost respect. Their presence at the upcoming event was certain, potentially sparking conflict, infuriating Abigail, and creating wedding complications.

Seeing Susan's hesitation, Catherine quickly persuaded, "A wedding is a big deal. Dorothy is busy with her studies, so Charles and Abigail will understand if she doesn't come. But if you don't go, it wouldn't be right, don't you think?"

Susan knew that although Catherine didn't say it, she still couldn't let go of James after all these years. Catherine actually wanted to see James, but Susan didn't want to point it out.

So, Susan nodded. "Alright."

Seeing Susan agree, Catherine was overjoyed and quickly served her some food. "You're eating for two now, eat more. Look at you, you're so thin and pale."

Saturday arrived, and Susan accompanied Catherine to the hotel where Charles's family was holding the wedding.

The hotel was decorated with blessings and red roses everywhere. Large photos of Paul and Shirley were displayed at the entrance, making it grand and impressive.

Charles, Abigail, Paul, and Shirley stood at the entrance to greet the guests. Paul wore a black tailcoat, looking very dignified, and Shirley wore a wedding dress with exquisite makeup.

Catherine pulled Susan aside and whispered, "Look how well-matched Paul and Shirley are. The wedding is so grand. You and Seb should have a proper wedding too."

Susan was at a loss for words. Her marriage with Seb would probably end after she gave birth. 'Having a wedding and then getting divorced would be pointless, wouldn't it?' she thought.

Of course, she couldn't say this to Catherine. She could only nod and say, "Paul and Shirley are wealthy. How can we compare to them?"

"It's a once-in-a-lifetime event. It should be decent," Catherine muttered as they walked up to Charles and Abigail.

They exchanged a few congratulatory words and handed over a decent gift. Susan then accompanied Catherine into the banquet hall.

As soon as they entered, they ran into James. Susan didn't want to see him and turned her head away.

"James, you came early?" Catherine was all smiles, finally seeing James.

James glanced at Catherine, then his gaze fell on Susan. He said with a face full of disdain, "Look at you now. How do you have the nerve to show up here? What will relatives and friends think?"
