Chapter 157 Something Happened

Susan was enjoying her meal when the door suddenly unlocked from the outside.

She looked up to see Isabella dragging a suitcase and carrying a travel bag, looking a mess.

"Are you moving in?" Susan asked, confused, as she saw the downcast Isabella.

Isabella saw Susan eating at the table, dropped her stuff, and rushed over.

"You're eating? Smells amazing, give me some!" Isabella grabbed the bowl from Susan and started devouring the food.

Stunned and heartbroken, Susan hadn't eaten properly for days. Now Isabella was taking her food?

"Can you leave me some?" Susan pleaded, almost in tears, as Isabella quickly ate most of the food.

After a bit, Isabella smacked her lips and said, "Your cooking's getting better!"

Susan looked at the nearly empty bowl and could only sip the remaining soup, feeling wronged.

Isabella glanced around the apartment and then at the now clean and refreshed Susan. "Wow, you really cleaned up. Looks like you're over your heartbreak."

"What kind of friend are you? I'm heartbroken, and you come to steal my food," Susan joked.

Isabella nodded, "If you can joke, you must be fine. I'm the one in trouble!"

"What happened?" Susan asked, puzzled.

"I have an announcement: you have to take me in," Isabella said, starting to unpack.

Susan followed her, asking, "What about your place? Why do you need to stay with me? I'm over my heartbreak; I won't do anything crazy."

Isabella rolled her eyes and sat on the sofa with her clothes, looking dejected. "I'm worse off than you. You lost a boyfriend; I lost my job and I'm broke. My lease is up soon, and I can't pay the rent. I told the landlord I wouldn't renew, packed my stuff, and came here."

Susan frowned and grabbed Isabella's hand, asking, "How did you lose your job? Did Seb retaliate?"

She regretted taking Isabella to see Seb. Isabella worked at Prosperity Group and relied on Seb for her job. Now, Susan felt guilty because Isabella lost her job too.

"Seb isn't that petty. It's Cynthia. She's back at Prosperity Group as an inspector and made my life hell. I couldn't stay there, so I resigned. I'll start job hunting tomorrow," Isabella said casually.

Susan felt even guiltier and said, "I'm so sorry, Isabella. This is all my fault."

Isabella had a sick mom, Michelle, to support and was already struggling. Now, because of Susan, she lost her job, and Susan felt terrible.

But Isabella smiled and said, "You've already caused me enough trouble. Just take me in for a few months."

Susan quickly nodded. "I'll take you in and cover breakfast, lunch, dinner, fruits, milk, and all your daily needs."

"That's more like it!" Isabella laughed.

Susan grabbed her phone, which had been dead, and charged it. As soon as it turned on, a text message popped up, and she slapped her forehead.

"Darn it!"

"What's wrong?" Isabella asked.

"I was supposed to start at a new company yesterday, but I forgot. They texted me saying the position's filled!" Susan pouted.

Isabella shrugged. "You weren't happy with that job anyway. Come job hunting with me tomorrow. We can find something together."

"Alright," Susan agreed reluctantly.

Just then, Susan's phone rang.

"It's my mom," she told Isabella before answering. "Mom, what's up?"

Catherine sounded anxious. "Susan, why couldn't I reach you? There's something wrong at home. Come back quickly!"

Susan got worried. "Mom, what happened? Don't scare me."

"You'll know when you get back." Catherine hung up abruptly.

Susan felt relieved, guessing Catherine was just angry and nothing major had happened.

"What's up?" Isabella asked.

"My mom wants me home. You unpack; I gotta go!" Susan said, grabbing her coat.

Susan rushed home and made it back before dark. The atmosphere was tense. Catherine was on the sofa, looking furious.

Susan cautiously sat down. "Mom, who made you angry?"

Catherine looked up and noticed Susan's swollen eyes. "What happened to your eyes?"

"Oh, nothing, just didn't sleep well," Susan tried to brush it off.

But Catherine wasn't buying it. She knew Susan rarely cried. "No, your eyes are swollen from crying. What the hell is going on?"

Susan realized she couldn't hide it. 'Mom would find out about my breakup with Seb sooner or later. Better to tell her now.'

"Mom, Seb and I broke up for good this time," she confessed.
