Chapter 584 Feel Lost
Susan walked to the entrance of the emergency room in shock. Looking inside, she saw Seb and Rylee by Carol's bedside, both in tears, while Andrew stood behind them.
"I'm not going to make it," Carol could barely speak.
Rylee held Carol's hand, crying, "Mom, you won't! You said you'd always be with me!"
"Mom," Seb, usually so strong, had red eyes, though he held back his tears.
Seeing this, Susan felt dizzy. Wasn't today Carol's birthday? How did things end up like this?
At that moment, Carol suddenly gripped Seb's hand and, with her last bit of strength, shouted, "Seb, you must divorce that woman!"
Seb was stunned by her words.
Susan heard this and felt her legs go weak, almost collapsing onto the floor!
"Mom," Seb frowned at Carol.
"You must divorce..." Carol passed away in the next moment.
"Mom!" Rylee screamed, crying uncontrollably.
Seb stared at Carol for a long time, holding her hand as tears finally fell.
Susan knew it was pointless to stay, so she turned and left the emergency room.
The spring night wind was still cold as Susan wandered aimlessly down the street. The neon lights in the distance were dazzling, but her heart felt empty.
The scene of Carol's last moments kept flashing in Susan's mind. She knew that when Carol uttered those words, her marriage with Seb was over.
She had thought they could be together forever this time, but fate had other plans. Happiness was fleeting.
If she had known, she might not have reconciled with him in the first place.
Thinking of this, Susan shook her head vigorously. She couldn't control her feelings for Seb; even a moment with him was precious to her.
Susan continued to wander the streets aimlessly, not knowing where to go or what to do next.
Carol was taken away by the medical staff, and Rylee sat in the hospital corridor, crying bitterly.
"Rylee, calm down. Crying like this will harm your health," Andrew said, holding Rylee's shoulder to comfort her.
"My mother...she's gone...and it's all her fault!" Rylee cried, her gaze suddenly fixing on Seb with a fierce intensity. "Seb, call the police! That woman...she murdered our mother! She has to pay!"
"How could Susan have murdered Mom?" Seb's face was haggard, his hands running through his thick hair.
"Mom said it herself! She said Susan pushed her down the stairs!" Rylee insisted.
Seb remained silent for a long time.
Andrew quickly interjected, "Rylee, you're upset. You're not thinking straight. I'm sure Susan would never do such a thing."
"Weren't you upstairs at the time? Did you see anything?" Rylee stared at Andrew.
Andrew hesitated, then said, "I heard Mom and Susan arguing, but I didn't see Susan push Mom. Maybe Mom just lost her balance."
"Did you see it or not? If you did, you're the key witness, and we can make that woman pay!" Rylee stood up abruptly.
Andrew didn't want to escalate the situation, fearing it might implicate him.
So, the next moment, Andrew said, "I'll tell the truth. I saw Mom grab Susan, but Susan didn't move at all. Mom lost her balance and fell down the stairs. It wasn't Susan's fault."
Hearing this, Seb glanced at Andrew and finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Rylee had to back down but added, "She's not innocent in all of this. If she hadn't argued with Mom, Mom wouldn't have fallen. Seb, don't forget Mom's last words. You must divorce that woman. She's a jinx. Ever since she came into our family, we've had no peace! Now our family has fallen apart!"
After a long pause, Seb stood up and said, "Rylee, I'll give Mom the justice, but we need to handle her funeral first."
With that, Seb took out his phone and started making arrangements for the funeral.
A few days later in the morning, Susan wore a black dress and held a bouquet of flowers.
As she approached the funeral home, she saw it surrounded by flowers and many people paying their respects.
As she neared the entrance, Susan hesitated, knowing she wouldn't be welcome. But she felt deeply guilty. Although Carol's fall wasn't her fault, she was the cause. Seeing such a vibrant person die so quickly was hard to accept, especially for Seb.
For the past few days, Susan had clutched her phone, wanting to call Seb but holding back.
She knew Seb must be struggling too, unsure of what to say to her. So, it was best not to talk for now.
"Susan!" Suddenly, someone called her from behind.
Susan turned to see Catherine, also dressed in black.
Seeing Catherine, Susan helplessly grabbed her hand. "Mom, when did you get back to Maple Valley?"
"I came as soon as I heard about Carol's death. Todd went inside, but I didn't feel comfortable going in, so I'm waiting here," Catherine said, looking towards the funeral home entrance.
Susan understood. Although Carol and Todd were divorced, they had been married for decades and had children together. Todd had to come to pay his respects.
Catherine then asked quietly, "Susan, how did Carol fall down the stairs? I heard it was her birthday that day."
Susan couldn't hold back her tears. "Mom, I argued with her that day, and she accidentally fell."
Catherine's eyes widened in shock. After a long pause, she asked, "How could this happen? What did Seb say? Did he blame you?"
Seeing Catherine's worried expression, Susan knew she couldn't mention Carol's last words. Otherwise, Catherine and Todd wouldn't be able to return to the central district in peace.
