Chapter 243 Sensitivity
When George mentioned marriage, Susan's heart skipped a beat.
She glanced at George's calm face and forced a smile, thinking, 'Maybe I'm overreacting. He probably didn't mean it seriously.'
"But I haven't bought anything for my mom yet!" Susan frowned.
"I already did. Went to the mall and got everything," George replied.
Susan's eyes widened. "What? You bought everything? What did you get? Why didn't you tell me?"
"Clothes, jewelry, supplements, groceries. Check the back seat," George said, eyes on the road.
Susan turned around and saw gift boxes and shopping bags piled up.
She grabbed a bag and found a deep red cashmere coat inside, high-quality and perfect for a woman in her fifties.
Another bag had a famous gold jewelry brand logo. She opened a small red velvet box and found a simple, elegant gold necklace.
There were also boxes of expensive supplements. Susan frowned. "George, how much did all this cost?"
"Don't worry, just a small lawsuit's worth," George said casually.
Despite his reassurance, Susan felt uneasy.
She knew the coat alone was at least two thousand dollars, and with the necklace and supplements, it must have been around ten thousand. It was too much for their situation.
As she stared at these extravagant gifts, a wave of shame washed over Susan. Her family had always struggled. She had vowed to work hard and make money to give her mom, Catherine, a better life.
Even with a decent salary at Prosperity Group, life was still tough. She had only ever bought Catherine a pair of gold earrings, which had made her mom very happy.
Now, things were just starting to settle down. The past few years had been hard, and she hadn't been able to show her mom much appreciation. Susan's eyes welled up.
Seeing her tears, George quickly comforted her, "What's wrong? Isn't visiting Catherine a happy thing? This isn't like you. You're not this fragile."
"No, I'm just emotional. My mom's been through a lot, and I haven't been able to give her a good life," Susan said, wiping her tears.
"In the future, you have me to help take care of her," George assured, patting her hand.
"Okay." Susan smiled, not arguing.
Then George suddenly asked, "So, does this mean you've agreed to my proposal?"
"Proposal?" Susan looked at George, surprised.
Seeing Susan's shocked expression, George looked at her seriously, then smiled. "I'm thinking of us getting married after the New Year."
Susan was caught off guard. They'd only been together for a bit over half a month. Getting married so soon felt rushed, but she didn't want to upset George by outright refusing.
After a moment, she smiled and said, "George, isn't that a bit too soon?"
"Don't worry about it. I'll hire a wedding planner to handle everything. You just need to try on the wedding dress. The law firm gets busy about half a month after the New Year, so I won't have time for a vacation then. I thought we could get married after the New Year, then I'll take you, Spring, and Serenity on a trip. When we get back, we'll start our life together. What do you think?" George offered, smiling.
Hearing that George had everything planned, Susan found it hard to refuse. She furrowed her brows, unsure how to decline.
George added, "If you feel it's too rushed, I won't force you. We can talk about it later."
Impressed by his thoughtfulness, Susan smiled. "I just feel like I'm not ready yet. How about we wait a bit longer?"
"Alright, whatever you say," George replied with a smile.
"Okay." Susan nodded, smiling.
With the New Year approaching, the streets were packed, and traffic was heavy.
Susan looked out the window, feeling anxious. Was she really going to marry George and spend her life with him? The thought made her panic a bit.
She knew it wasn't pre-wedding jitters. This wasn't her first marriage, and she wasn't that sensitive about relationships.
But what was wrong with her? Hadn't she already decided to be with George, give Spring a complete family, and maybe even have a child together?
Lost in thought, Susan didn't notice they had arrived until George parked the car at Catherine's place.
"We're here," George said.
Susan snapped back to reality. She quickly got out, grabbed the shopping bags, and walked into the hallway with George.
After two knocks, Catherine's voice came from inside. "Coming!"
Catherine opened the door, and George greeted her first. "Catherine!"
"George, it's so great to see you!" Catherine exclaimed, beaming with joy.
"Mom, George brought you some gifts," Susan chimed in, smiling from behind.
"You shouldn't have, come on in!" Catherine stepped aside, letting them in.
"Mom, George bought you a cashmere coat and a gold necklace. Try them on and see if you like them," Susan said, carrying the bags into the living room.
As she looked up, she was surprised to see two people sitting there. She was stunned!
The two people in the living room were also stunned to see Susan. One looked taken aback, while the other stood up with a cold gaze.
