Chapter 177 Deep Affection
"You're awake?"
Susan turned to see George smiling by her hospital bed.
"What are you doing here?" she asked, struggling to sit up.
George quickly adjusted the bed and placed a pillow behind her.
"You had a high fever and were convulsing. Luckily, I got here early; it could have been much worse," he said, sitting down.
Susan tried to recall; she remembered trembling with a high fever before everything went blurry and she must have passed out.
Looking at George, she realized he had saved her again. If it weren't for him, she might not have made it.
"Did you bring me to the hospital?" she asked.
"Yes," George nodded.
She vaguely remembered being lifted by strong arms, feeling warm and safe, like a dream where she was back in Seb's arms.
"I owe you one again," she said, pushing thoughts of Seb away.
"As long as you're okay, that's all that matters," George replied.
After a moment, Susan asked, "How did you know I was sick? And how did you get into my house?"
"I kicked your door down. But don't worry, I've already arranged for a new one," George said awkwardly.
"You kicked the door down?" Susan was surprised. George, usually gentle and refined, had shown unexpected strength.
Seeing her skeptical look, George flexed his arm. "I'm stronger than I look!"
Susan burst into laughter.
George smiled, relaxed and happy.
"What's so funny?" a voice came from outside.
They looked up to see Jessica walking in with flowers.
"Ms. Green?" Susan was surprised by her visit.
Jessica glanced at George, then smiled at Susan. "You look much better. Get well soon."
George took the bouquet from Jessica and placed it in a vase by the bed.
"Thank you," Susan smiled.
"Ms. Green, I need to take two days off," Susan said apologetically to Jessica.
"Take three days off. Get well before you come back. Otherwise, someone might say I'm exploiting you," Jessica replied, glancing at George.
"I never said that," George quickly responded.
Jessica teased, "You didn't say it, but didn't you call me to say the work I gave Susan was too exhausting and that's why she got sick?"
"Did you really take my joke seriously?" George said awkwardly, adjusting his tie.
"When have I ever not believed you, Lawyer Anderson?" Jessica laughed.
Susan watched their easy banter and asked, "You two know each other?"
"We..." George began.
Jessica cut him off, "Know each other? We're old friends! Right, Mr. Anderson?"
George looked a bit nervous, adjusting his tie and smiling awkwardly. "Yes, we've been friends for many years."
"How could it be such a coincidence?" Susan was surprised.
After a few more words, Jessica said, "I have a lot to do at the office. Take care of yourself. I have to go."
"Take care, Ms. Green," Susan nodded.
Jessica glanced at George, who said, "I'll walk you out."
Jessica left first, and George followed. Susan noticed George seemed to have trouble walking. She frowned, wondering if he hurt his leg kicking the door. Feeling guilty and touched, she watched them leave.
Once they were far from the ward, George and Jessica stopped.
George stepped forward, lowering his voice. "Jessica, what are you doing? Why did you say all that in front of Susan?"
"Where did I say anything wrong? Should we pretend we don't know each other?" Jessica retorted, a bit agitated.
"But you didn't have to make it seem like there's something between us," George said anxiously, stomping his foot.
Seeing George's anxious expression, Jessica stepped closer, looked at him with soft eyes, and smiled, "Isn't there something between us?"
Jessica's demeanor drove George crazy. He turned his face away, his voice cold. "Jessica, we're adults. Don't forget our agreement."
"Don't worry, I won't ruin your plans. But it seems she doesn't have much interest in you. I'm afraid you don't stand much of a chance this time," Jessica said, then walked away in her high heels.
Watching Jessica leave, George frowned, then went back to the ward.
As soon as he entered, Susan asked anxiously, "Is your leg injured?"
George paused, then walked over and smiled, "It's nothing, just a minor injury."
"Did you hurt it while kicking the door?" Susan's eyes were fixed on his leg, filled with concern.
