Chapter 1000 Interrogation

Leon tried to smooth things over, "I wanted to leave right after the speech, but a bunch of politicians and big clients kept pulling me aside for drinks and chats. I mean, I'm the host today, so I couldn't just blow them off. That's why I'm late. Please don't be mad, okay?"

He reached out to hold Isabella's hand.

But Isabella pulled away, took a step forward, crossed her arms, and said, "What about Bronte? Care to explain?"

Leon frowned, "What are you talking about?"

Isabella's anger flared up. She turned around and glared at him. "What's going on with you two?"

"There's nothing between us," Leon said, spreading his hands, looking embarrassed.

But to Isabella, that embarrassment looked a lot like guilt.

She stormed into the walk-in closet, and Leon followed her.

Isabella grabbed the dress she wore to the party, walked up to Leon, and demanded, "You told me this dress was a limited edition from Johnson Corporation's Skyhaven brand. So why was Bronte wearing the same one tonight? Did you buy two?"

"No way. What are you thinking?" Leon quickly replied.

"Explain it to me," Isabella insisted.

Leon sighed, "Bronte is the Vice President of Johnson Corporation. This dress is from Skyhaven, which is a Johnson Corporation brand. It's not surprising she has one."

Isabella was momentarily speechless because his explanation made sense.

"She said you two grew up together and calls you Leon. What's that about?" Isabella pressed on.

Leon hesitated, then said, "Bronte's dad is a major shareholder and board member of Johnson Corporation and tight with my dad, so yeah, she knows me. We've known each other since we were kids, and my family calls me Leon, so she does too. But that doesn't mean we grew up together."

Isabella nodded. "Fine, but why didn't you ever mention this? Why let me think Bronte was just some regular employee at Prosperity Group?"

She felt like Leon had been hiding something. Otherwise, he should've told her when Bronte was being overly friendly.

Leon spread his hands, "I didn't think it was necessary. Bronte is just someone I knew from the past, not even a friend. I can't possibly give you a detailed rundown of everyone I know, can I?"

Isabella was left speechless, but his evasiveness made her feel something was off between him and Bronte.

"Fine, even if that's true, why didn't you tell me Bronte is the Vice President of Johnson Corporation?" Isabella asked.

"First, I didn't think it was necessary. Second, how long has it been since we last met? I didn't have the chance," Leon replied matter-of-factly.

Isabella was furious. "You were a lawyer; I can't argue with you!"

Isabella stormed out of the walk-in closet, leaving Leon standing there.

A little while later, Leon wearily pushed open the door to the master bedroom.

Isabella was leaning against the headboard, and Milo was fast asleep next to her.

Leon started to take off his suit and loosen his tie, getting ready for a shower.

Isabella, sitting by the bed, said, "You should sleep in the next room. Don't wake Milo."

Leon was taken aback.

He walked over to Isabella, glanced at Milo, and said softly, "I'll be really quiet."

Isabella turned her face away, refusing to look at him.

Leon sighed, "We haven't been together in a while. Don't you miss me at all?"

"I got used to it while you were gone," Isabella replied coldly.

Leon hesitated, looked at her for a moment, then silently grabbed his pajamas from the closet and left the room.

As soon as he was gone, tears welled up in Isabella's eyes.

She felt like Leon wasn't being honest with her. Bronte's boldness tonight made her think there was more to the story. Leon's explanations felt weak and unconvincing.

With tearful eyes, Isabella stared at the closed door. She had missed him so much and had been dreaming of his return. She thought tonight would be a sweet reunion, but it turned out to be anything but.

All night, Isabella tossed and turned, unable to sleep.

Early in the morning, she heard footsteps outside.

Even though they were faint, she knew it was Leon.

Not wanting to face him, she closed her eyes and pretended to sleep.

The door creaked open, and she heard him approach the bed.

Leon stood there for a long time before quietly leaving.

Isabella knew he must have looked at her and at Milo.

When the door closed again, tears streamed down her face.

In the days that followed, Leon left early and came back late, and Isabella made sure to avoid him. They didn't see each other for days.

One morning, Leon left for work later than usual, but Isabella still stayed in bed.

She only got up after she saw his car drive away from the window.

Her anger had subsided a bit, but she couldn't stand Leon's cold attitude.

Isabella was stubborn and refused to be the first to give in. So, even though they lived under the same roof, they hadn't seen each other for a week.

That morning, Isabella was on the new treadmill, working out.

Bronte's mockery about her weight had hit a nerve. She was determined to lose weight and not give Bronte another reason to mock her.

Kathy watched from the side, worried, and had urged her several times to have breakfast, but Isabella kept running.

Just then, the doorbell rang.

Kathy quickly went to answer it.
