Chapter 14
At the end of the month, Isabella burst into the office, grabbed Susan's hand, and dragged her outside.
"Where are we going?" Susan asked, puzzled.
"The company posted the list of retained employees. Let's check it out," Isabella said urgently.
Susan sighed, "I have a feeling you'll definitely stay."
Seeing Susan's downcast look, Isabella reassured her, "You've always done well. Maybe you'll be on the list too."
"It'd be great if you stayed. Anyway, I'm going on maternity leave soon." The company knew about her unwed pregnancy, so she was sure she'd be fired. Plus, the HR manager Robert was Amelia's lover, and Amelia would be the first to go after her.
When they got to the conference room, it was already packed. Isabella and Susan squeezed in.
Isabella anxiously scanned the list for her name.
Susan had lost interest in the list. She looked up and saw Amelia strutting over arrogantly.
Amelia smirked, "Susan, even if you can't stay, with your skills, you'll find a better job than at Prosperity Group in no time. Unlike me, who has to keep working hard here."
Susan shot back, "Everyone knows how you managed to stay. No need to flaunt it."
Amelia was about to retort when Isabella let out an excited scream, "Susan, we both made it!"
Isabella's words shocked not only Susan but also Amelia.
Susan and Amelia looked up at the list, their eyes quickly scanning it.
Sure enough, within seconds, they both found Susan's name.
Susan thought she was seeing things. She blinked and looked again, and her name was still there.
"Susan, we all made the cut! We're staying on!"!" Isabella almost jumped up, pulling Susan along.
Susan's mouth dropped open in joy.
She had actually made it. Overjoyed, Susan grabbed Isabella's hand and squeezed out of the conference room. The two went off to celebrate, completely ignoring the dumbfounded Amelia.
Amelia hadn't yet recovered from the shock when Melissa stormed up to her, shouting angrily, "Amelia!"
Amelia looked up to meet Melissa's questioning gaze. Before she could speak, Melissa dragged her to an empty terrace.
"Didn't you say that if I got evidence to report Susan, she'd be laid off and I'd stay? Now I've gone through all the trouble to get the evidence and report her, but she's the one who stayed, and I'm the one being laid off?" Melissa was furious.
Amelia was speechless. She turned and started walking away, saying, "I'll go ask Robert."
"No need to ask. He's been laid off too!" Melissa shouted at Amelia's back.
Hearing this, Amelia turned around, staring at Melissa in shock.
Melissa crossed her arms angrily and said, "Serves me right."
Amelia frowned, thought for a moment, then stepped forward to console her, "Melissa, don't worry. Once I get to the headquarters and make some connections, I'll definitely get you back in."
Melissa looked at Amelia skeptically. "Are you kidding me? Connections aren't something you can just make on a whim."
But Amelia was full of confidence. "Didn't Robert fall for my charm in just a few days? The headquarters is full of powerful people. As long as I connect with someone influential, I'll definitely get you back in."
Amelia was right. She had interned at the company for a few months before being promoted, and she hadn't been laid off because she quickly got close to Robert.
Melissa saw that Amelia had some skills, which is why she stayed close to her. Now, Melissa had no other options but to trust her.
"Alright, I'll wait. Don't let me down," Melissa's anger subsided.
"Just wait and see," Amelia said, patting her chest.
