Chapter 740 Embarrassment
Although Susan felt a bit regretful, since she was already there, she could only follow him inside.
The Anderson Family gathering was held in a small banquet hall, and the decor was, of course, very upscale. As soon as Susan walked in, she noticed there were about a dozen tables, and almost every table was full.
With just a glance, she saw that the men of the Anderson Family were all dressed very appropriately, and the women were all dressed to the nines, competing to outshine each other. Since it was winter, almost every woman was wearing a fur coat.
"Seb, your seat is over here!" At this moment, someone enthusiastically guided Seb.
"Okay." Seb smiled slightly and led Susan to the most prominent table.
"Hello, everyone!" Seb greeted and then sat down with Susan.
Susan hardly knew any of Seb's relatives, just familiar faces at best.
As soon as she sat down, Susan looked up and was immediately stunned by the face across from her!
George was sitting right across from her, with Maria by his side.
It made sense, George was also part of the Anderson Family, so he had every right to be there. It was just unexpected that they would end up at the same table.
"Seb, Susan." George's gaze lingered on Susan for a second before he greeted them.
Susan smiled and nodded, while Seb generously said, "Did you arrive early?"
"We've been here for 15 minutes," George replied.
"I went to pick up Susan, and there was a bit of traffic," Seb said, smiling at Susan.
At this moment, Maria smiled at Susan and said, "Susan, long time no see."
"Yes, it's been a while," Susan smiled back, feeling that talking to Maria now was really just a formality.
Maria had changed; today she looked very elegant and wealthy, quite fitting for George's status.
Susan noticed that George was very quiet, sitting there without saying much. Instead, it was Maria who kept serving him food and whispering to him, though he responded rather indifferently, answering only when asked.
While they were eating, one of Seb's relatives, Tessa Hawthorne, glanced at Susan and said in a sarcastic tone, "Susan, do you know what kind of gathering this is today?"
Hearing Tessa's words, Susan looked up and met her critical gaze.
Susan knew she had no good intentions, but she had to answer, given the large crowd at the table. "The Anderson Family gathering."
Hearing this, Tessa smirked and sneered, "Yes, this is our Anderson Family gathering. I remember you and Seb are divorced, right? In what capacity are you attending this gathering?"
"Could it be that you and Seb have remarried?" Another relative, Maeve Harrington, asked in surprise.
"No way! Seb, did you forget your mother's last words? Marrying that woman again would be a slap in the face to her memory!" Tessa declared, fixing Seb with a stern look.
At this moment, Susan felt very awkward sitting at the table.
Susan knew that some of the Anderson Family relatives had always wanted to gain some benefits because Seb's parents were the most successful in the Anderson Family.
But Todd was an honest official who never abused his power, which offended many in the Anderson Family. And Carol was a proud person who naturally looked down on these people, so they never got any benefits from Seb's parents and always made trouble for Seb and his family.
At this moment, Seb smiled and said to Tessa and Maeve, "Susan and I are not remarried, but in my heart, Susan has always been part of our Anderson Family. Besides, she is the mother of my children, so I brought her to this gathering. If you don't welcome her, then I can leave with her!"
Seb's words were very firm, making Tessa and Maeve a bit embarrassed, but they still didn't give up.
"You are part of our Anderson Family; how can you leave?"
"Yes, if anyone should leave, it should be her."
At this moment, George, who had been silent at the table, suddenly said, "If you two are quite finished meddling in other people's affairs, perhaps you could focus on your sons' legal troubles instead."
George's words left Tessa and Maeve speechless.
Seb looked at George and smiled, saying, "If certain people can't behave themselves, perhaps we should find a more hospitable place to dine."
"Seb, I agree," George immediately responded.
At this moment, Tessa and Maeve saw the awkward atmosphere and left the table angrily to eat at other tables.
Afterward, only Seb, Susan, George, and Maria were left at the table.
George then picked up his knife and fork and smiled. "Let's eat by ourselves!"
"Yes, eat more!" Seb also picked up his knife and fork and kept serving food to Susan.
Seeing this, Susan lowered her head to eat, thinking, 'They are actually on the same side, and they cooperated so well, driving away those so-called elders with just a few words.'
But Susan also knew that George spoke up for her.
She looked up and glanced at Maria, afraid she might overthink.
But Maria seemed to be entirely focused on George, serving him food, pouring him water, and handing him napkins.
Finally, George seemed a bit impatient but still spoke to Maria in a gentle tone, "I'm not a child; you don't need to take care of me like this. Just eat your own food."
Hearing this, Maria felt a bit disappointed but nodded, "Got it."
Seeing this somewhat awkward couple, Susan could guess their general state.
Watching Maria care for George in every way, but George not appreciating it, Susan felt a bit worried. After all, she hoped George and Maria would be loving, so she could feel better.
At this moment, she suddenly felt a tight grip on her left hand under the table!
Looking down, Susan saw Seb's large hand holding hers.
Looking up, Susan met Seb's apologetic gaze.
Then he whispered, "I'm sorry for making you feel uncomfortable."
Susan didn't know how to respond. Saying she wasn't uncomfortable seemed too humble, but saying she was uncomfortable was hard to admit.
The next moment, Seb frowned and said, "I regret bringing you here. I was a bit selfish, not wanting to face this alone, so I wanted you to accompany me, but it made you feel awkward."
Hearing this, Susan's heart softened.
He didn't want it to be like this either. From his words, Susan could hear his loneliness and helplessness.
