Chapter 973 The Unpredictable Future
When Isabella heard the news, she just lost it.
She grabbed her stomach and yelled, "Why didn't you tell me sooner?"
The thought of her kid possibly having schizophrenia freaked her out. She'd seen people with it before, and it was terrifying. Her head felt like it was going to explode from anxiety.
Leon stepped up, kneeling on the lawn, and grabbed her shoulders, looking worried. "I didn't tell you because I was scared you couldn't handle it and you'd be worried all the time. I didn't want you living in fear every day."
Isabella wasn't having it. She shoved his hands off her shoulders, furious. "If you'd told me earlier, I could've gotten a contraceptive shot. I wouldn't be pregnant now. It's too late to fix anything. What's the point of saying this now?"
Leon looked full of regret. "I know, it's all my fault. I should've been honest from the start. But now that things are like this, let's face it together, okay?"
"How am I supposed to face it? My kid might have schizophrenia. If that's the case, I'd rather not give birth. I'm a mother; how can I watch my kid suffer like this?" Isabella clutched her chest, crying.
Seeing her painful look, Leon frowned. "I've talked to a top psychiatrist. The doctor said there's a one in four chance our kid could inherit it."
A glimmer of hope flashed in Isabella's eyes.
One in four meant a 75% chance her kid would be fine. That was good news, but the 25% chance still scared her.
"So don't be too pessimistic. Our baby has a 75% chance of being healthy," Leon tried to comfort her.
Isabella still couldn't accept it. "What if our kid is in that 25%?"
Leon looked serious. After a moment, he said firmly, "Don't worry, I'll always protect you and our kid. I can give you both the best life."
Isabella sneered. "We want a healthy life, not the best life!"
Leon could only look at her, feeling guilty.
Then, Isabella raised her hand and slapped him hard across the face.
The slap echoed in the air.
Isabella coldly said, "This slap is for my baby because you're an irresponsible father!"
Leon looked at her, full of guilt. "Isabella, if it makes you feel better, do anything to me. Just don't get too emotional; it's not good for you or the baby."
His words made her even angrier.
At that moment, Nora, who was in a wheelchair, saw Isabella hitting Leon and got scared. She shouted, "Don't hit Leon!"
Isabella frowned at Nora's reaction.
Leon quickly turned around, held Nora's hand, and gently said, "Mom, no one's hitting me. Your daughter-in-law is just playing with me!"
Nora calmed down right away and stared at Isabella, who was still sitting on the lawn.
"Her name's Isabella. She's your daughter-in-law," Leon said, looking at Isabella.
Isabella was annoyed hearing Leon introduce her like that. But with Nora being mentally unstable, she couldn't say anything and just tried to stand up slowly.
Maybe because she'd been sitting too long and was heavily pregnant, Isabella found it tough to get up.
Seeing this, Leon quickly moved to help her, but she coldly pushed him away.
"I have a grandson!" Nora exclaimed, pointing at Isabella's belly like a child.
Leon smiled slightly. "Yeah, Mom, you're going to have a grandson. When the baby is born, I'll bring him to see you."
Nora clapped her hands and nodded, as happy as a kid.
Then she seemed to forget about it and stared blankly at the old toy car in her hand.
Seeing Nora like this, Isabella felt a dull ache in her heart. She looked up at Leon and felt he was also a pitiful person.
Leon pushed Nora back to her room, and Isabella followed slowly, holding her waist.
Back in the room, Leon carefully combed Nora's hair, washed her feet, and handed over the clothes and food he brought to Nora's caregiver.
Seeing this, Isabella's eyes suddenly felt a bit sore.
She felt sorry for Leon but also resented him.
If he had told her earlier about this situation, she wouldn't have left him. She would have married him and adopted a kid.
Isabella suddenly remembered that when she first got pregnant, Leon once suggested she abort the kid, then they would get married and adopt one later.
At that time, Isabella thought Leon was crazy. How could anyone want to abort their own kid and adopt someone else's?
Thinking about it now, Isabella understood Leon's thoughts.
On the way back, Isabella sat in the back seat of the car, silent, her eyes blankly staring at the scenery passing by outside the window, feeling extremely desolate.
Seeing Isabella fall silent, Leon reached out to hold her hand, just about to say something.
Unexpectedly, Isabella suddenly pulled her hand away.
"Isabella, can you really not forgive me?" Leon looked at her, full of sadness.
"How can I forgive you?" Isabella said coldly.
Hearing this, Leon had no words. He rubbed his face hard with both hands and then slumped back in his seat.
Isabella's heart was filled with mixed emotions. She couldn't focus on her relationship with Leon. She felt like there was a ticking time bomb beside her, not knowing when it would explode. If it did, it would be devastating.
Isabella touched her swollen belly. Every day, she had been looking forward to the birth of her baby. But now, she didn't want it to be born soon because its future was so uncertain.
