Chapter 972 The Truth Comes to Light
Upon hearing this, Leon let go of Isabella and said, "I'm really sorry!"
Seeing Leon's eyes on her, Isabella asked, "Did you get the sandwich?"
Leon suddenly remembered he had tossed the sandwich earlier. He patted Isabella's shoulder and said, "I lost it in the rush. How about we head down the street and grab some waffles instead?"
Isabella, surprisingly, nodded. "Okay."
Leon supported Isabella as they slowly made their way to the street corner.
Isabella ate her waffle quietly, feeling a strange sense of forgiveness towards Leon.
She looked up and saw Leon staring at her, not touching his waffle.
"Why aren't you eating?" Isabella asked, frowning.
Leon suddenly grabbed her hand and said, "Isabella, I need to tell you something."
"What is it?" Isabella's heart raced, unsure of what he was about to say.
Leon held her hand tightly, his eyes full of emotion. "When I heard a pregnant woman was in a car accident, I freaked out. I couldn't bear the thought of losing you. When I saw it wasn't you, I was so relieved."
Isabella stared at him. She had been terrified too when she saw the injured woman. If it had been her, it would probably be Leon who would collect her body.
Leon continued, "Since you got pregnant, I realized we were wasting time before. We should be happy together, not fighting. You have every right to be mad; it's my fault. From now on, I want to face my mistakes and cherish you, our baby, and our time together."
Isabella felt deeply moved. Leon's serious expression made her feel a bit pressured. She then asked, "You still haven't told me what you want to confess."
"After breakfast, I'll take you somewhere." Leon then called for a driver to pick them up.
"Where are we going?" Isabella asked, curious.
"You'll see," Leon said, keeping it a mystery.
Half an hour later, a luxury car pulled up.
Leon helped Isabella into the car, and they drove towards the outskirts of Maple Valley.
Nearly an hour later, they arrived at a beautiful area with mountains, flowing water, and lush greenery.
Leon helped Isabella out of the car. She saw a building ahead that looked like a high-end nursing home.
"Why did you bring me here?" Isabella asked, puzzled.
Leon looked at the nursing home and said, "I brought you to meet someone."
"Who?" Isabella asked, confused.
"You'll see," Leon said, then helped Isabella walk towards the nursing home.
The nursing home was top-notch, with great facilities and professional staff. Isabella couldn't help but wonder who Leon was bringing her to meet.
Leon led Isabella to a spacious, bright room on the first floor.
The room was well-equipped but pretty bare. An elderly woman with graying hair and a face full of wrinkles sat in a wheelchair. She looked to be in her sixties.
Leon let go of Isabella's hand, walked over to the elderly woman, held her hand, and smiled. "Mom, I'm here to see you."
Isabella was shocked.
She looked closely at the elderly woman and noticed a resemblance to Leon.
'Is this Leon's mother? Isn't Leon supposed to have grown up in an orphanage? How could his mother still be alive?' Isabella thought.
He said he had something to confess. Could it be about his mother? Isabella was full of questions.
"Who are you?" the elderly woman asked, staring at Leon blankly.
"I'm Leon. Don't you recognize me?" Leon asked patiently.
The elderly woman lowered her head, muttering to herself while holding a small, worn but clean toy car.
Leon tried talking to her again, but she just kept muttering.
Isabella looked at Leon, puzzled.
Leon then pushed the elderly woman and said to Isabella, "Let's take her for a walk, shall we?"
"Okay." Isabella nodded.
Leon wheeled his mother out to an open lawn, then turned to the still-confused Isabella and said, "This is my mother, Nora. She's been living here for ten years."
Isabella asked, "Didn't you say you grew up in an orphanage?"
"I lived in the orphanage for three years, then moved to a boarding school," Leon replied.
"What illness does your mother have?" Isabella asked, looking at the mentally impaired Nora.
"She has schizophrenia, inherited from my grandmother. It got worse after some trauma, and as she aged, she became like this," Leon said, looking at Nora with pain in his eyes.
"Inherited schizophrenia?" Isabella was stunned, staring at Leon.
"Yes." Leon nodded.
Isabella stared at Leon in shock. "Then you..."
"I'm perfectly fine so far," Leon said, spreading his hands.
Hearing this, Isabella's heart filled with fear.
She started to understand why Leon had insisted on her aborting the baby. He was afraid this terrible mental illness would be passed on to their kid.
Thinking of this, Isabella's heart raced, and her legs gave way, causing her to collapse onto the lawn.
"Isabella." Leon tried to help her, his brows furrowed.
"Don't touch me!" Isabella shouted, tears streaming down her face.
Isabella's mind was racing, thinking more and more, and becoming increasingly terrified.
Seeing Isabella's reaction, Leon looked at her with pained eyes and said, "You probably guessed it. I insisted on not having the baby because I was afraid it would inherit the illness."
