Chapter 44 Take Her Back
For a moment, Seb and Catherine were both refusing the gift. Seeing this, Susan just grabbed it and shoved it into Catherine's hand. "Mom, this is from Seb. If you don't take it, you're basically saying you don't see him as your son-in-law."
Catherine reluctantly accepted it. "Alright then."
But when she opened it, she was stunned. "Is this twenty thousand dollars? No, this is too much!"
Susan hadn't noticed earlier, but she didn't expect Seb to give Catherine so much money. She quickly masked her surprise and said, "Mom, it's already good enough that you didn't ask him for money. Just take it!"
Susan thought to herself, 'This is probably my "bride price," right? Twenty thousand dollars, and it's a buy-one-get-one-free deal, really not much.'
"You always speak without thinking," Catherine scolded Susan.
Seb looked at Susan and said, "Mom, that's exactly what I love about Susan."
Hearing this, Susan felt she couldn't take it anymore. They were just putting on a show, but Seb was going too far. She got goosebumps all over.
Susan felt like she was sitting on pins and needles, her face full of discomfort, while Seb kept a slight smile on his face, occasionally glancing at Susan, leisurely sipping his coffee.
After a while, Catherine said, "Seb, since it's your first time here, stay for dinner. I may not be a great cook, but my food is decent."
Before Seb could speak, Susan quickly said, "Mom, Seb has an appointment tonight. We've already agreed on it, right?" She winked at Seb.
Seb smiled slightly and nodded. "Mom, let's try your cooking next time. Tonight's appointment is important and can't be postponed."
"Alright, next time then," Catherine said, a bit disappointed.
Susan was about to see Seb off when he suddenly said, "Mom, since Susan and I are married and my place is ready, should I take her back today?"
Hearing this, Susan looked at Seb in shock. 'What was he saying? Taking me back without even asking me first?' she thought.
Seeing Susan glaring at him, Seb smiled at Catherine and said, "Mom, I know you'll miss Susan, but she'll visit often. My place is big, and you can stay there too."
Catherine withdrew her reluctant gaze from Susan, took both Seb and Susan's hands, and placed them together. "Susan has to grow up someday. Getting married and having children is natural. I have to let go. Just take care of each other and live well."
Catherine's words brought tears to Susan's eyes. She leaned into Catherine's arms, half-jokingly saying, "Mom, I don't want to leave. I want to stay with you and Dorothy forever."
Seb looked at Susan, who had never shown this side of herself before, with a hint of tenderness in his eyes.
"No woman stays unmarried. Go pack your things," Catherine said, tears welling up as she quickly turned to her bedroom.
Half an hour later, Susan, carrying a simple luggage bag, left with Seb.
As soon as they exited the building, Susan complained, "Why didn't you ask me if I wanted to leave before dragging me out of the house?"
Seb glanced at the slightly exasperated Susan and kept walking. "You're my wife now, so naturally, you should live with me."
Seeing how domineering he was, leaving no room for discussion, Susan followed behind him, saying, "I'm warning you, I have many bad habits. Don't blame me if you can't stand them."
"In school, my dorm was full of people with bad habits, and I got used to it. I doubt you'll be worse than those guys," Seb said, suddenly turning to look at her.
Susan didn't expect him to turn so suddenly, and due to inertia, she bumped into his chest, letting out a small cry. "Ouch!"
"Sweetheart, we're not home yet. If you want to throw yourself into my arms, wait until we're inside," Seb joked, a smile playing on his lips.
His words made Susan blush. She was about to hit him when he took her luggage and wrapped an arm around her waist, leading her out of the neighborhood.
Seb's warm, strong hand on her waist made Susan feel dizzy. The usually sharp-tongued Susan forgot to scold him, her steps unconsciously following his.
At that moment, Susan noticed the neighbors in the old neighborhood were secretly watching them, especially Seb. This time, Susan walked proudly, letting Seb hold her.
The neighbors probably knew about her pregnancy and had been gossiping about her being unmarried and pregnant. Catherine had silently endured a lot of those harsh words.
This time, Susan openly left the neighborhood with Seb, proving to herself and her family that she could live well and had married a successful, handsome man like Seb.
Susan glanced at Seb, who was holding her waist with one hand and carrying her luggage with the other. She was flooded with numerous thoughts, 'Seb had come to support me, publicly acknowledged me as his wife, warned Sophia and Amelia, restored my dignity, showed utmost respect to mom, and even respectfully took me home. Did he want to live a good life with me and grow old together?'
Thinking of this, Susan's heart raced. She quickly lowered her head to hide her excitement. She had never thought she would develop feelings for Seb. Could there really be some unspoken emotions between them?
Leaving the neighborhood, Seb removed his arm from around Susan, who frowned and gazed up at him.
Seb's face had returned to its usual calm, the smile gone. He explained, "I saw Catherine watching us from the window."
"What?" Susan quickly turned to look back at the neighborhood, but they were too far from her house to see anything.
