Chapter 539 You Must Be With Me

The next morning, Susan fed Spring, gave Hayden his homework, and grabbed her bag to head out.

"Mom, where ya goin'?" Hayden ran up and latched onto Susan's leg.

Susan grinned, ruffled Hayden's hair, and said, "It's almost New Year's. Gotta hit the mall and grab some stuff for the party."

"Then I want a toy," Hayden whined, putting on his best spoiled-kid act.

"Alright, I'll get you a toy and a doll for Spring too," Susan said, glancing at Spring who was playing with Mary.

"Yay!" Hayden cheered, clapping his hands.

Before heading out, Susan peeked at Todd's bedroom and saw the door was shut.

While slipping on her shoes, Susan asked Kathy, "Hey Kathy, where's Dad?"

"Mrs. Anderson, Mr. Todd Anderson went out after breakfast," Kathy quickly replied, hurrying over.

"Did Morgan go with him?" Susan asked.

Since Todd was still not very mobile, Seb had hired a professional nurse, Morgan, to look after him.

"Mrs. Anderson, since it's almost New Year's, Mr. Todd Anderson gave Morgan a break. He went out alone. I was worried and wanted to follow, but Mr. Todd Anderson said he could walk two miles with no problem and just wanted some fresh air, so he didn't let me tag along," Kathy said with a smile.

Hearing this, Susan nodded. "If he's not back by noon, give him a call."

"Okay," Kathy nodded.

Only then did Susan leave the house, feeling more at ease.

With New Year's coming up, decorations were everywhere. The fancy neighborhood of Maple Valley was all decked out with lights.

Watching people come and go in the community, a tall man in his late fifties, wearing a black cashmere coat, hesitated in front of a high-rise building.

In the golden sunlight, he kept pulling out his phone, but no matter how many times he called, the other person's phone was always off.

After a long pause, Todd finally couldn't hold back and walked into the lobby of the building.

He had already found out that Catherine was now living at Dorothy's place and had the exact apartment number.

He had planned to wait until the divorce was finalized to find Catherine, but since divorce was a lengthy process, he wanted to talk to Catherine first. He was afraid that showing up out of the blue would make Catherine mad, so he hesitated downstairs for so long.

But after weighing it for a long time, he couldn't wait anymore. Even if Catherine got mad, he had to talk to her.

After the doorbell rang twice, someone came to open the door.

"Weren't you taking Amanda to buy clothes? Why are you back so soon..." Catherine stopped mid-sentence when she saw who it was.

"Catherine?" Todd's eyes widened when he saw her.

"What are you doing here?" Catherine snapped, but her eyes were locked with Todd's, filled with longing.

At this moment, Catherine was wearing a blue and white floral housecoat, her hair neatly tied back. She never wore makeup, but her features were delicate and her skin was well-maintained, making her look very pleasant even in her fifties.

"Can I come in and talk?" Todd asked, looking a bit awkward as he glanced inside.

Catherine hesitated for a moment but then stepped aside. "Yeah, come in."

Todd walked in, and Catherine shut the door behind him.

The place was spotless.

Catherine quickly fetched a pair of slippers and set them in front of Todd.

Todd bent down to change his shoes but struggled a bit since his legs were still stiff.

Though he just frowned slightly, Catherine immediately noticed.

Without a word, Catherine half-squatted, helped Todd take off his shoes, and slipped on the slippers. She moved with the ease of someone who had done this a thousand times.

"Thanks," Todd said, his eyes locked on Catherine.

His intense gaze made Catherine blush. Feeling a bit flustered, she rubbed her hands and said, "I'll get you some water!"

"No need. I'm here to talk, not for water," Todd said, grabbing her arm gently.

"Don't do that." The touch sent a jolt through Catherine, making her shiver. She stepped back, putting some distance between them, making Todd feel a bit awkward.

Todd looked around and asked with a smile, "No one else home?"

"Dorothy took Amanda to the mall," Catherine replied quickly.

"Oh, right, your granddaughter. I should've brought a gift," Todd said, feeling a bit guilty.

Catherine lowered her head. "They just left. They probably won't be back before you leave."

It was clear she didn't want Todd to meet Dorothy.

Todd definitely got it. She didn't want the kids to see them together.

Catherine's heart raced as she met Todd's gaze.

To hide her nerves, she turned and walked towards her room. "Let's talk in my room."

Catherine walked to her room, sat on the edge of the bed, and looked out at the blue sky and white clouds. In a resentful tone, she asked, "Didn't I ask Susan to give you a message? Didn't she tell you?"

"Susan told me, but did you ask for my consent?" Todd frowned.

"Do I need your consent to not want to see you?" Catherine laughed bitterly.

Todd walked up to her, looked down for a moment, and then said, "Catherine, I came today to make it clear. I'm definitely divorcing Carol, and I want to be with you!"

Catherine looked up, her eyes sharp. "Todd, you're being too pushy. Your divorce with Carol is your business, but whether I want to be with you is my decision."

Suddenly, Todd grabbed her, holding her arms tightly. "As long as you have feelings for me, I have to be with you!"

"I've already decided to cut ties with you. I won't have feelings for you anymore. You should leave. I don't want to see you again!" Catherine said, pushing Todd away.
