Chapter 43 Showing Off Love

Susan stared blankly at the so-called wedding ring in Seb's hand. It was a silver band encrusted with tiny diamonds that sparkled like stars. Even without a big rock, she knew it was worth a lot.

"Let me put it on for you," Seb said softly, taking her hand and sliding the ring onto her finger.

Susan's heart started racing. She looked up at Seb, who was holding her hand, and saw him give her a gentle smile—something she'd never seen from him before. It gave her goosebumps. 'Right, we were acting. He was helping me get back at Amelia. How could I be so foolish?' she thought.

Soon, Susan's hand was interlocked with Seb's, and she smiled coyly, "I thought I lost the ring. I was worried all day."

"It's my fault. I should have told you earlier," Seb said gently, a stark contrast to his usual stern demeanor.

Their act was so convincing that no one around them doubted it. Everyone believed they were truly married.

James was the first to react. He stepped forward with a fawning smile and said, "Susan, how could you marry Mr. Anderson—no, Seb—without telling me? I wasn't prepared at all."

Seeing James act like a different person, Susan responded coldly. 'How could I have such an unworthy father?' For the first time, she felt ashamed of having James's blood in her veins.

At this point, Amelia finally faced reality. Pale and flustered, she shot Susan a venomous look before storming off in a huff.

"Amelia!" Sophia knew they had lost today. She didn't bother to argue further and turned to chase after Amelia.

Susan observed Sophia and Amelia leaving, her gaze cold and amused. Despite years of conflict with them, she had never emerged victorious. Yet, a few words from Seb had swiftly brought about their downfall, illustrating the insignificance of individuals against power and wealth.

Susan glanced at James and said coldly, "Your wife and daughter have left. Aren't you going to chase after them?"

"How can you talk like that? I'm your father," James said, lacking confidence.

Susan sneered and then stared at James, questioning, "Where were you when Dorothy and I couldn't afford tuition? Where were you when we had nothing to eat or wear? Where were you when we were bullied? Do you think being a father is that easy? It comes with responsibilities and duties. Dorothy and I have been fatherless for fifteen years, so don't ever call yourself my father again. It's laughable, utterly laughable!"

Susan's words left James speechless. He began to sweat and quickly unbuttoned his collar.

Catherine didn't want James to be embarrassed. She pushed Susan aside and said, "Susan, what are you saying?"

Then she smiled at James. "James, Susan is being immature. Don't take it to heart. It's getting late and we should all head home."

Knowing it was pointless to argue with Catherine, Susan turned and walked out.

James forced a smile and said to Seb, "Seb, let's have a proper chat next time."

"Sure," Seb nodded and then followed Susan out.

Susan and Catherine got into Seb's Bentley.

Leon was driving, and Seb sat in the front passenger seat. Susan and Catherine sat together in the back.

Catherine looked around the luxurious car and smiled at Seb in the front. "Seb, this car is so fancy. It must belong to your boss. Won't you get in trouble for using it to drive us? Maybe Susan and I should take a cab instead. We wouldn't want to affect your job."

Seb was puzzled by her words and looked at Susan, who was momentarily speechless, unsure how to explain to Catherine.

At this point, Leon turned and smiled at Catherine. "Mr. Anderson is the boss. This car belongs to him, so you and Mrs. Anderson can sit however you like."

Leon’s words left Catherine stunned. She frowned and looked at Susan for an explanation.

Susan quickly said, "Mom, Mr. Johnson is telling the truth. This car belongs to Seb."

Catherine was taken aback. "Susan, didn't you tell me Seb was just an employee? That his family was from a remote area and couldn't afford a house? How is he suddenly a boss with such a fancy car? What's going on? Why did you lie to me?"

Susan was at a loss for words, regretting her past fabrications. Now, no matter what she said, it would be wrong.

Seeing Susan's dilemma, Seb smiled and said, "Mom, don't blame Susan. It's my fault. I was afraid you wouldn't accept my status and think I wasn't serious about Susan, so you wouldn't agree to our marriage. If you want to blame someone, blame me."

Catherine's accusatory look softened into a gentle gaze. "I know you're defending her. Susan must have lied to me. Whether you're rich or not, seeing how well you treat Susan now, I have no reason to object. Just treat her well in the future, and I'll be at ease. Susan has suffered too much with me since she was a child."

As she spoke, Catherine suddenly started to cry.

Susan quickly handed her a handkerchief. "Mom, why are you crying?"

"I'm just happy," Catherine said, taking the handkerchief and wiping her tears.

"Mom, please don't cry. Otherwise, Susan won't forgive me when we get home," Seb even managed to crack a joke at this moment.

The joke made Catherine burst into laughter, her mood greatly improved. Seeing this, Susan gave Seb a grateful smile. She thought, 'Seb not only charms young women but also knows how to win over older ones!'

Back at the Wilson residence, Seb solemnly presented Catherine with a gift, holding it with both hands. He said seriously, "Mom, I originally planned to visit you in a few days, so I didn't prepare a proper gift today. This is just a small token of my appreciation. Please accept it."

"How can I accept this? As long as you and Susan are happy, that's all that matters. I can't take it," Catherine politely declined.
