Chapter 223 Unreasonable Request
When Catherine heard this, she was shocked, and even Susan was left speechless.
Susan immediately snapped, "No way! I bought this gold bracelet at the mall for over three grand. How could it be fake?"
Susan was furious. Dorothy was clearly insulting her. She wasn't rich, but she wasn't desperate enough to buy a fake bracelet as a gift!
"Don't believe me? Check it yourself and see if I'm wrong!" Dorothy shot back.
Susan opened the red velvet box and took out the gold bracelet, inspecting it carefully. It looked similar but was lighter and the color was off.
She realized it was indeed fake as she remembered the one she bought at the mall was different. But where did this fake one come from?
Glancing up at Dorothy, who sported a smug grin, it became evident that Dorothy was the mastermind behind this deception!Dorothy, with a triumphant look, asked, "So, is it fake or not?"
"Susan, what's going on?" Catherine asked, stepping forward with a frown.
Susan angrily walked up to Dorothy, holding the bracelet in her face, and coldly asked, "Dorothy, this isn't the bracelet I bought. The one I got was real gold, and I included the receipt in the box. Now the receipt's gone. Where did you put it?"
She was shocked by Dorothy's attempt to embarrass her, feeling a mix of heartbreak and fury.
Dorothy didn't back down. She stood up, knocked Susan's hand away, and the bracelet fell to the ground.
"You’re my sister. If you needed money, you could've told me. Even if you bought Amanda a cheap gift, I wouldn't blame you. If you wanted to save face, you could've asked me for money to buy a decent gift. Why give a fake bracelet? My in-laws' relatives immediately recognized it as fake. My mother-in-law and father-in-law were there, along with many guests, all laughing at us. Do you have a grudge against me?" Dorothy pushed Susan.
Susan stumbled and almost fell.
She stared at Dorothy in disbelief. She never thought Dorothy would stoop so low.
Today, all of Henry's relatives and friends were there, including his parents. Susan instantly understood Dorothy's plan. Dorothy wanted Henry's family to see her as unworthy.
Susan sensed Dorothy's apprehension about a potential romantic connection between her and Henry, knowing that Henry's family's opinion held significant weight.Reflecting on this, Susan grasped the depth of Dorothy's cunning and ruthlessness. The realization that her own sister could be so malicious sent a chill down her spine.
Dorothy then grabbed Catherine's hand and started crying. "Mom, our family and Henry's family aren't a good match. I've been doing my best in the Thompson family these past two years. Luckily, my in-laws are open-minded and haven't looked down on me. But what Susan did today made them embarrassed. They didn't say anything harsh for Amanda's sake, but I felt utterly humiliated. What was Susan thinking?"
Even Catherine started to believe Dorothy. She turned to Susan and said, "Susan, how could you do such a thing? I know you're short on money. You could've told me. I still have the money you used to give me every month. I could've afforded a small gold bracelet!"
Susan stepped back, looking at Catherine with pained eyes. "Mom, you believe Dorothy? You think I bought a fake bracelet for Amanda?"
Catherine's face darkened. "Would Dorothy falsely accuse you of something like this? She has to maintain her reputation with her in-laws."
Seeing Dorothy crying in Catherine's arms, Susan found it almost laughable.
Even Catherine chose to believe Dorothy. Susan felt utterly defeated and hurt.
"Exactly. I have to maintain my reputation with my in-laws. Why would I frame you? Mom, I can't even show my face there now. Henry's relatives must be gossiping about this. My in-laws, although open-minded, must be angry. I'm afraid it will affect my relationship with Henry," Dorothy cried, holding Catherine's hand.
Worried, Catherine asked, "What should we do? It wouldn't be good if it affected your relationship."
"There is a way to make amends, but it depends on whether Susan is willing," Dorothy said, hesitating and then looking at Susan.
Catherine quickly asked, "What way? Tell us. Susan has always cared for you. This time, she was just under financial pressure and made a mistake. If there's a way to make amends, she'll do it."
Susan looked coldly at Dorothy, unsure of what trick she was playing.
Dorothy, holding Catherine's hand, looked up and replied, "Mom, my in-laws don't know that Susan is living at home with a child. I think if Susan could bring a gift and apologize to my in-laws, I could speak on her behalf and explain her difficulties. I believe my in-laws are reasonable people. They will accept Susan's apology and won't blame our family!"
