Chapter 99 Ridicule

George's few words left Cynthia speechless, her face going pale.

George then walked up to Seb and said, "Seb, I'll explain later, but not now."

He took Susan's hand and led her to a corner with seats. Susan shot a cold glance at Cynthia and Seb before following George.

After they left, Cynthia grabbed Seb's arm and complained, "Seb, look at George, he doesn't respect me at all!"

"I think he's right," Seb replied flatly.

Cynthia was furious but held back. She whined, "Seb, you didn't want Susan, and now George has her. It's disrespectful to you. And Susan, switching sides so quickly, isn't that too much?"

"Have you said enough?" Seb's face darkened.

"I'm just telling the truth," Cynthia muttered.

Seb lowered his voice, "If you're unhappy, you can leave. Don't ruin Mr. and Mrs. Ramirez's party."

Seb then grabbed a glass of wine from a waiter's tray and downed it in one gulp. Cynthia could only grab a random drink and make small talk with some ladies.

George and Susan sat down on a sofa in a corner.

"Sorry, I didn't tell you I was Seb's ex-wife. I only found out a few days ago that Seb is your brother," Susan said.

George thought for a moment and chuckled, "I was a bit stunned, but I never asked you, so no need to apologize."

"If you think it's inappropriate for me to stay at George and Vivian Law Firm, I can quit when we get back," Susan said, holding her wine glass.

George was taken aback. "Is there a necessary connection between you being Seb's ex-wife and working at my firm?"

"Seb misunderstood us. I don't want to make things difficult for you, and it might be hard to explain to your family," Susan said, looking at George.

George smiled and patted Susan's hand. "Don't worry, Seb and I have been close since we were kids. Even though I call him 'brother,' we're only a few months apart. He knows me well, and I know him. I'll explain, and he'll understand. As for my family, we rarely gather since my grandparents passed away, so you don't need to worry."

Seeing Susan still concerned, George added, "You're crucial to my firm and hold many of our business secrets. I won't let you go. If my competitors poach you, my loss would be huge!"

Susan laughed. "Alright, I take back what I said."

To be honest, Susan enjoyed the job; the pay was excellent, and George was approachable If it weren't for Seb, she wouldn't want to leave. But seeing Seb now and then was a bit annoying.

Susan thought, ’Why should I avoid Seb? I hadn't done anything wrong. If anyone should feel awkward or guilty, it was him.' She felt relieved.

By now, most guests had arrived, and the host began to speak. Everyone wished Willard and Helen well.

Willard stepped forward. "Thank you all for coming to our wedding anniversary party. We appreciate it."

After he bowed, the crowd applauded.

Willard continued, "As mentioned in the invitation, tonight is also a charity auction. My wife and I are auctioning some of our collected paintings, antiques, and memorabilia. All proceeds will go to the Maple Valley Red Cross to help children from poor families. You can also make donations if you wish. We've arranged for someone to tally them."

The host then addressed, "Those who wish to donate can do so here. In half an hour, the items donated by Mr. and Mrs. Ramirez will be auctioned. Please support!"

Guests eagerly went to the registration desk to donate.

Susan opened her bag but realized she hadn't brought much cash. She wondered, 'Can I donate with a card?'

George, noticing, took out a check and smiled, "I've already prepared. We can donate together!"

Susan saw the check was for $20,000, with the donors listed as George and Susan. Seeing their names together felt strange. Usually, couples made such donations, but she and George were just employer and employee. It felt off.

"This doesn't seem right," Susan said.

George replied, "It's a personal donation. Don't overthink it. Just do it with a kind heart. I'll go register it. Wait for me!"

George took the check and left. Susan, though feeling awkward, accepted it.

Seeing the crowd at the registration desk, Susan headed to the restroom.

Cynthia noticed and followed her.

After using the restroom, Susan washed her hands. Looking up, she saw Cynthia glaring at her in the mirror.

Susan frowned, annoyed. What was Cynthia's problem? She had already divorced Seb and stepped aside. Why was Cynthia still pestering her?

"I underestimated you. Just divorced Seb and already with George. Are you determined to join the Anderson family?" Cynthia mocked, arms crossed.

Susan grabbed a paper towel, wiped her hands, crumpled it, and threw it in the trash. She walked up to Cynthia and said coldly, "Whether I join the Anderson family is none of your business, and you can't control it!"
