Chapter 187 Pain

Seb's grip tightened around Susan's neck, making it impossible for her to breathe. She stopped struggling, realizing it was pointless. She was beyond tears, clenching her teeth, and slowly, resentment towards Seb grew in her heart.

No matter how much Seb tortured her, Susan never gave in. She just bit her lip and stayed silent.

The car sped smoothly through the darkening night, filled with Seb's heavy breathing.

Over an hour later, the black car pulled over. Seb stood under a large tree, about ten feet away.

He held a cigarette, the smoke rising slowly under the starlight. His eyes were fixed on the car door, his expression a mix of frustration, regret, and irritability.

Soon, the car door opened, and Susan, dressed in men's casual clothes, ran out. She shot a resentful glance at Seb, grabbed her bag, and fled in a panic.

As she ran, tears streamed down her face. Her clothes were ruined earlier, so she had to wear the men's clothes she bought for George.

Watching her disappear into the night, Seb forgot to extinguish his nearly burnt-out cigarette. The red ash burned his fingers, but he didn't seem to notice.

Leon quietly appeared behind Seb.

"Mr. Anderson, is this really the right thing to do? If you don't tell Ms. Wilson the truth, you're both in pain," Leon advised.

Staring in the direction Susan had left, Seb stubbornly said, "She'll get over this. The unbearable pain should be mine alone. I don't want her to endure it."

"But..." Leon tried to continue.

Seb cut him off, "Enough. I've made up my mind. We're heading back to Maple Valley!"

Seb turned, got in the car, and Leon sighed before starting the engine. The car sped away.

Susan sat on a bench by the street, her eyes empty as she watched the cars pass by.

The employee dormitory was nearby, but she didn't dare go up, fearing her colleagues' questions. Her hair was disheveled, and her neck was bruised—anyone could tell what had happened.

Even though it was a hot summer, Susan felt cold inside. She hugged herself, scanning her surroundings with a sense of lonely sadness.

Suddenly, a question hit her.

Earlier, Leon had parked the car less than three hundred feet from the dormitory. Did Seb know where she was staying? Was it a coincidence?

Frowning, Susan thought it couldn't be a coincidence. Seb must have been tracking her; otherwise, he wouldn't have found her so easily.

She knew she couldn't stay in Lindell Harbor any longer. Seb wouldn't let her go easily. She had to leave.

She needed to quit her job, pack her things, and leave immediately, not giving Seb another chance.

She sat there until ten o'clock, estimating her colleagues would be asleep, then returned to the dormitory.

Luckily, everyone was already in bed, either reading or on their phones. Taking advantage of their distraction, Susan slipped into the bathroom, showered, and changed into modest pajamas before getting into bed.

That night, she tossed and turned, unable to sleep. When she finally dozed off, she had continuous nightmares, waking up in a cold sweat.

"Susan!" Someone grabbed her arm. She cried out and sat up, eyes wide open.

"Susan, did you have a nightmare?" Morgan asked, concerned.

Seeing it was Morgan, Susan wiped the sweat from her forehead and forced a smile. "Yeah, just a nightmare."

"I'll get you some water," Morgan said, pouring a glass and handing it to her.

Susan took a few sips. "Thanks."

Morgan took the glass back, and Susan looked at her. "Morgan, I'm not feeling well. Can you ask Ms. Green for leave on my behalf tomorrow?"

"Sure, don't worry about it," Morgan nodded.

Susan knew it would take days to process her resignation, and she feared Seb might harass her again. She needed to leave Lindell Harbor ASAP.

The next morning, after Morgan and the others left for work, Susan started packing.

She left the dorm with her suitcase, took a bus, then a taxi, and wandered around a mall before heading to the train station. She suspected someone might be following her. Seb always found her too easily, so he must have had someone tracking her. Of course, this was just her suspicion.

Looking up at the train schedules, Susan felt lost. Where should she go? Back to Maple Valley? No, that was Seb's territory. But where else? She had no family or friends elsewhere, always relying on Catherine and Dorothy.

After thinking for a while, she decided to buy a ticket for the next train, wherever it was going. She believed she could survive in a new place.

There were many people in line for tickets. Just as it was almost her turn, her phone rang.

Though the screen was cracked, she could still answer the call.

"Mom?" Susan answered.

"Susan, come back to Maple Valley quickly. Dorothy is about to give birth!" Catherine said urgently.

"Mom, isn't the due date still two weeks away?" Susan asked, hesitating.

"Dorothy fell and went into early labor. The doctor says she needs a C-section. Come back quickly!" Catherine's voice was choked with tears.

Hearing this, Susan didn't hesitate. "Mom, I'll be back right away. You and Henry keep an eye on things!"

"Got it, got it," Catherine repeated before hanging up.

After the call, Susan put everything else out of her mind. She quickly bought a ticket back to Maple Valley and rushed back.

Dorothy was young, Catherine was namby-pamby and though Henry was reliable, he hadn't lived with Dorothy for long. Everything depended on her.
