Chapter 244 Paranoia

Susan's eyes first landed on Henry, then met Dorothy's cold stare.

After half a year apart, Susan sometimes thought about Dorothy, wondering if time had softened her sister's hatred. Despite Dorothy's past cruelty, Susan still saw her as her little sister, remembering the innocent, carefree girl she once was.

Dorothy's eyes were icy, showing no joy at their reunion, with a touch of disdain evident.

Feeling Dorothy's attitude, Susan's expression also turned steely. Neither of them initiated the conversation.Just then, Catherine walked over, smiling at Henry. "Henry, this isGeorge."

She turned to George. "George, this is Henry."

Henry gave George a stiff nod.

Unaware of Susan and Henry's history, George smiled. "Hi, Henry."

"Hi, George," Henry replied.

Susan noticed the gift boxes on the floor, thinking, 'Looks like Henry and Dorothy have also brought gifts for Catherine. What a coincidence.'

Feeling awkward, Susan thought if she had known, she and George would have come another day.

George and Henry started chatting, while Susan and Dorothy sat in silence. Sensing the tension, Catherine quickly said, "Susan, Dorothy, come to my room. I want to try on the clothes you guys bought me."

"Sure." Susan nodded. Dorothy got up without a word and followed Catherine, leaving Susan no choice but to follow.

In the room, Catherine tried on a cashmere sweater. It looked elegant, clearly high-end.

"What do you think?" Catherine asked, looking in the mirror.

"It looks good," Susan said flatly.

Catherine smiled. "Dorothy and Henry bought it for me."

Then, Catherine tried on the cashmere coat Susan had brought, admiring it in the mirror. "This must be expensive. I've only seen others wear it; I don't even dare to try it on in the mall."

"Mom, we'll take good care of you from now on," Susan said, feeling emotional.

Catherine checked the price tag, exclaiming, "Two thousand dollars! That's too much!"

"Mom, it's George's gift. Just accept it," Susan reassured with a smile.

"You guys spend too much on gifts. And this gold necklace too, don't be so extravagant in the future," Catherine scolded gently, although still happy..

"Got it." Susan nodded.

Dorothy sneered, "Mom, Susan's more capable than me. She found a successful man. Henry's just a college professor with a stable salary. We may can't afford to make you happy like this!"

Hearing Dorothy's jealous words, Susan frowned, shocked that she'd say such things in front of Catherine.

Catherine quickly took off the coat and comforted Dorothy, "Dorothy, it's George's first year giving me a gift, so it's understandable it's more expensive. I don't judge your love by the value of gifts. You hurt Susan's feelings today!"

Dorothy grabbed Catherine's sleeve, pouting. "Mom, I didn't mean to hurt Susan. I just feel useless, not as good as her!"

"In my eyes, you and Susan are the same," Catherine said, hugging Dorothy.

Seeing Dorothy act all sweet with Catherine, Susan felt like she was back in the past. But now, Dorothy seemed more complicated, hiding something beneath her gentle exterior. Susan found her terrifying.

Susan wanted to leave, feeling the atmosphere was off. But Catherine insisted she stay for the family dinner she'd ordered.

When the food arrived, Catherine went out to greet the delivery, leaving Susan and Dorothy alone. Feeling bored, Susan was about to follow Catherine.

"Susan!" Dorothy suddenly called out.

Susan's heart tightened as she turned to see Dorothy stepping closer, saying, "I don't get it. Why do you have to join in when I'm giving Mom a gift?"

Susan knew Dorothy was overthinking. She responded coldly, "I didn't want to join in. You didn't tell me you were coming today. How was I supposed to know?"

Frustrated, Susan felt like Dorothy thought everything she did was aimed at her.

Dorothy continued, her tone tinged with anger,"I called Mom yesterday to let her konw Henry and I were coming today, and she said we'd have dinner together. How could you not know?"

"Mom hasn't called me in the past two days!" Susan explained.

Dorothy didn't believe her, accusing, "You're just trying to embarrass me. You bought a cashmere coat, a gold necklace, and supplements. I only got a sweater and some food. You're showing off that you found a rich man, aren't you?"

Susan looked at Dorothy in shock. It seemed like whatever she did was wrong in Dorothy's eyes.

Feeling a deep chill, Susan realized Dorothy had changed and felt deeply disappointed.

"Are you paranoid?" Susan asked, too tired to argue, her tone dripping with disdain and contempt.
