Chapter 60 The One Who Married Me Is Not You
The woman in front of her didn't have any of the arrogance that a mistress should have. Now, the funny thing was that maybe she, Susan, had become the mistress between Cynthia and Seb.
Even Cynthia's voice was so gentle that Susan could see why Seb was so attached to her.
"Miss Phillips, right? Just get to the point. I have things to do," Susan said, not wanting to waste time on small talk.
Cynthia lowered her head, staring at her coffee cup, struggling to speak.
Susan frowned, and Cynthia finally looked up with tearful eyes.
"Mrs. Anderson, I'm sorry. I know I shouldn't have come, but Seb and I are really in love. We can't live without each other. Please, let us be together," Cynthia pleaded.
At that moment, Susan felt like Cynthia was the victim and she was the intruder.
Despite her doubts, Susan knew she had to stand her ground.
"Go to Seb. If he wants to divorce me and marry you, he can," Susan said, expressionless.
Cynthia wiped her tears. "Seb is loyal. Now that you have his child, he can't divorce you. Let me be the bad guy."
"What do you mean? You want me to ask Seb for a divorce?" Susan suddenly saw Cynthia's true colors. Her demands were outrageous.
Cynthia kept playing the victim, dabbing her tears with a handkerchief. "I know it's a lot to ask, but is your marriage happy? Do you feel Seb's love?"
"That's my concerns!" Susan snapped, disgusted with Cynthia.
'She could've just taken Seb away. Why come here to humiliate me?' Susan thought.
"I see you're independent. Are you really willing to live with a man who loves someone else?" Cynthia's words cut deep.
Susan knew the truth, but hearing it from Cynthia was different. Her face turned red, then pale. Usually sharp-tongued, she had no comeback.
Cynthia apologized, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hurt you. But it's true, isn't it?"
Susan's eyes turned cold. She realized Cynthia's cunning. Despite her weak appearance, Cynthia's words hit hard. She was a formidable opponent.
Susan stayed silent, and Cynthia continued, "Did Seb tell you what he was doing during the week he was away?"
"What are you getting at?" Susan wasn't about to fall into Cynthia's trap.
Cynthia smiled, looking a bit embarrassed. "I've been living in Averlake for the past two years. I'm pretty clumsy and made a lot of mistakes there. Seb went to clean up my mess."
Susan was stunned, her heart a whirlwind of emotions. No wonder Seb said he was on a business trip to Averlake. Prosperity Group had no business there. He went for Cynthia, and she had completely believed him.
But thinking about it, Susan had no reason to blame Seb. They were together because of the baby.
"If you two love each other so much, why didn't you stay together back then?" Susan knew it was a foolish question, but she had to ask.
Cynthia turned to the large glass window, recalling the past. "Our families have been friends for generations. We grew up together, were classmates in high school and college. Naturally, we got together, and both families were thrilled. We were well-matched in social status."
The term "well-matched" made Susan uneasy as she realized she and Seb were far from it. Unexpectedly, Cynthia and Seb were childhood sweethearts.
Cynthia continued, "We were planning to get married after graduation. But then my family had a disaster. My father made a mistake in the military and got fifteen years in prison. My mom had a mental breakdown. I had to drop out of school, and our marriage was called off. The Anderson family couldn't be associated with us. Later, to treat my mom, I went to Nyxonia to seek help from relatives. Seb and I lost contact until I returned from Averlake half a month ago."
Susan didn't know if Cynthia's story was true, but it was clear Cynthia and Seb had been in love, separated by circumstances. They must have reconnected recently, as Seb's recent behavior indicated.
"But didn't Seb tell you he was already married?" Susan's question felt weak even to herself.
"Of course, Seb never lies to me. He told me he was married and that you were pregnant. But he said he still loves me and will divorce you after you give birth," Cynthia replied.
Although Susan wasn't surprised, hearing it from Cynthia still hurt.
"Did Seb ask you to come to me?" Susan stared at Cynthia.
Susan believed Seb wouldn't stoop so low as to make her and Cynthia sit down to discuss his future.
"Of course not. Seb couldn't bring himself to say it, so I came," Cynthia said.
At this point, Susan laughed, though her smile was bitter. She said solemnly, "Miss Phillips, the person who married me is Seb, and the child in my belly is his. So if there's any talk of divorce, he should come to me. I can't discuss this with you!"
Cynthia wanted to say something.
But Susan didn't give her a chance. She stood up and grabbed her bag. "Sorry, I have something to do. I have to go."
With that, Susan turned and walked out, ignoring Cynthia behind her.
