Chapter 538 Troubles
Right then, Susan grabbed Rylee's hand and noticed it was ice-cold.
"Rylee, you can't keep this under wraps forever. Andrew's gonna find out eventually," Susan gently reminded her.
Susan was already stressing about Rylee and Andrew's marriage. Now, with Rylee unable to have kids and knowing how self-centered Andrew was, she was even more freaked out. Right now, Andrew was leaning on the Anderson family, so he wouldn't mess with Rylee. But if he ever hit it big, he'd definitely ditch her.
Seeing how clueless Rylee was, Susan couldn't help but worry.
Hearing Susan's words, Rylee frowned and said, "I gotta keep this hidden as long as I can. I can't tell him now. If he finds out, he'll definitely divorce me. Andrew's family has had only one kid for three generations. When we were in Averlake, his mom would call me every day, bugging me to have a child. And Andrew loves kids. If he knows I can't have children, he'll definitely leave me."
At this point, Rylee couldn't hold it in anymore and started bawling.
Seeing Rylee's shoulders shaking as she cried, Susan felt awful and tried her best to comfort her. But in situations like this, a few comforting words wouldn't do much; Rylee had to come to terms with it herself.
Seeing Rylee so emotional, Susan stayed with her in the café for most of the day. It wasn't until the evening, when Rylee felt a bit better, that Susan, still worried, put her in a taxi.
Two nights later, Susan worked late at the office and then had dinner with Isabella before heading home.
By around nine o'clock, the villa was super quiet, with just a couple of dim wall lamps lit in the living room.
At this time, Hayden and Spring were already asleep.
Susan gently pushed open the door, looked at them, kissed their little cheeks, and then quietly closed the door and went upstairs.
As soon as she opened the master bedroom door, Susan was hit by a cloud of smoke and started coughing.
Looking up, she saw Seb sitting at the head of the bed, wearing a bathrobe, with a cigarette between his fingers. Smoke was curling up over his head.
Susan frowned as she walked in and saw the ashtray on the bedside table overflowing with cigarette butts. She couldn't help but raise her voice. "Why are you smoking so much?"
After saying that, Susan walked to the window and opened it all the way. It was already the end of the year, and the freezing cold wind rushed in, making her shiver.
The New Year was just around the corner, and the office was on holiday. The streets outside were filled with New Year's vibes, with lights and decorations everywhere. But the house was filled with gloom. Susan knew that this New Year would be hard to enjoy, so she felt super down.
At this moment, Seb finally spoke, "Today, those my dad's old pals all got back to me, saying that Dad's made up his mind and they can't change it. They told me to think of another way."
Hearing this, Susan wasn't shocked because Todd was a man who stuck to his guns. He must've really made up his mind this time.
For some reason, Susan felt a bit of secret joy hearing this news. She admitted she was a bit selfish. She hoped Catherine could find her own happiness. Besides, Todd and Carol were always at each other's throats, which was a total buzzkill for the family vibe. But seeing Seb's troubled look, she felt a bit guilty and worried. If Todd and Carol got divorced, Todd and Catherine's affair would be out in the open.
Susan then turned and sat in front of Seb, looked at his furrowed brow, hesitated for a moment, and said, "Seb, you've seen how Mom and Dad have been living all these years. It's not good for two people who don't love each other to stay together. Maybe if they get divorced, they can live the lives they want. It could be a good thing."
Before Susan could finish, Seb suddenly snapped at her, "A good thing? Getting divorced at their age is a joke and will mess up our family's unity. How will Rylee and I face people? Besides, it's Dad who wants the divorce, not Mom. Do you get that?"
Susan's face turned pale after being yelled at, and she lowered her head without saying anything.
Seeing Susan's expression, Seb thought she was feeling wronged and sighed, regretting that he had taken his anger out on her.
He then stubbed out the cigarette in the ashtray, put his arm around Susan's shoulder, and said gently, "I'm sorry!"
Actually, Susan was feeling anxious and scared because what she had just said was selfish.
She could understand Seb's feelings. He was in his thirties and definitely couldn't accept the reality of his parents getting divorced. Moreover, the Anderson family was well-known, and this would be a huge scandal.
"Maybe I didn't think it through," Susan said, not daring to look at Seb, afraid he would notice her unease.
Seb held her hand in his palm, kissed her cheek, and said, "I know you mean well. It's not your fault. I just lost control of my emotions."
"So, what are you gonna do since Dad is so determined?" Susan asked.
Seb frowned. "Dad has already told Mom to think it over. If she still doesn't agree to the divorce after the New Year, he will file a lawsuit. I haven't figured out what to do yet. Let's wait until after the New Year."
"How are we gonna spend the New Year?" Susan asked, looking troubled.
Seb thought for a moment and replied, "I don't think Mom and Dad will sit down for a meal together anytime soon. How about we have lunch with Mom on New Year's Eve and then have dinner with Dad in the evening?"
Hearing this, Susan nodded. "That's a good idea."
"I need to visit some senior executives and political and business leaders in the next two days. You'll have to handle the New Year prep at home. Remember to buy new clothes and supplements for both Mom and Dad," Seb instructed.
Hearing this, Susan smiled and said, "Don't worry about it. You go ahead with your work. I'll go shopping tomorrow and buy you a new outfit too."
"Do as you like," Seb said, not in the mood for jokes.
