Chapter 642 Eavesdropping

But Maria still refused, "Susan, I'm being paid for my time, I have to do my job wholeheartedly. It's all my duty, so I can't accept any extra compensation from you."

"I know you have a great lawyer now and definitely don't lack money, but I'm afraid George might come after me for shortchanging you!" Susan stood up with a smile.

Hearing this, Maria hesitated for a moment, then smiled slightly and said, "George is a reasonable person. He wouldn't sue someone for benefits I don't deserve, especially not you. That's simply not possible!"

Susan had meant it as a joke, but Maria took it seriously.

Instantly, Susan felt uncomfortable and realized that today's Maria was not the same as before. She was now George's wife, and it seemed that their friendship couldn't continue as it used to.

Although she felt sad, Susan still used a smile to hide her awkwardness. "Let's talk about it later. Do you have time tonight? We can give you a farewell dinner. My treat, of course!"

Upon hearing this, Maria frowned and politely declined, "Sorry, Susan, I have something to do tonight. Maybe another time, and I'll treat everyone."

"Alright then." Susan didn't insist and just nodded.

"I'll go pack my things." Maria smiled and then left Susan's office.

After Maria left, Susan leaned back in her swivel chair, feeling exhausted.

More than half an hour later, Isabella suddenly pushed open Susan's office door.

"Has Maria left?" Susan looked up and leaned back in her chair.

"She just left." Isabella spread her hands and then sat across from Susan's desk.

Susan looked up at the ceiling and sighed.

"Why the sigh? Is it about Maria?" Isabella asked.

"Nothing gets past you." Susan smiled at Isabella and then said regretfully, "Thinking back to when we first started this accounting firm with Maria, it feels like just yesterday. It was tough, but we were really happy, busy with work every day. But after Maria married George, I feel like the way she talks to me today is a bit strange."

"Of course, it's strange. Her man doesn't love her, and she sees the woman her man loves. How could she not feel awkward?" Isabella said, pouting.

"So I guess we can't be friends anymore." Susan sighed. "How about we go out for Mexican food tonight?" Susan suddenly suggested.

Isabella glanced at Susan and said, "What? Are we celebrating losing a friend?"

Hearing this, Susan hesitated for a moment and then said, "How could I forget? You're in a sweet relationship now. How would you have time to hang out with me?"

"I have time today, but you have to treat me," Isabella said generously.

"How could you bear to leave Leon?" Susan teased.

At the mention of Leon, Isabella couldn't help but smile. "He and Seb went to a neighboring city for an inspection today. They won't be back until late tonight. By the time we finish our Mexican food, he probably won't be back yet."

"I thought you were ditching Leon to hang out with me." Susan pouted.

"You're already a mother of two, and I've just started to experience the joys of sex. How could you ask me to hang out with you?" Isabella's face turned a bit red, but she didn't hold back her words at all.

Hearing this, Susan immediately perked up. "Sex? You really tried it? How does it feel?"

Seeing Susan teasing her, Isabella immediately reached out and slapped Susan's hand on the desk!

"Haven't you and Seb made love? You should know better than me how it feels!" Isabella glared at Susan.

Susan was left speechless and just stared at the desk blankly.

'A business trip to a neighboring city? It seems he's been quite busy lately.' she thought.

At this moment, Isabella suddenly slapped her forehead and said, "Oh, I almost forgot. I came to tell you something I just heard."

"What is it?" Susan asked with a frown.

Isabella said, "Didn't Maria just leave? I had a package to pick up, so I went out. But I didn't expect to hear someone talking on the phone at the corner of the stairs. It turned out to be Maria's voice. She was calling George."

Hearing this, Susan stared blankly at Isabella, thinking, 'She must have heard something between Maria and George, otherwise, she wouldn't be in such a hurry to report it to me.'

Seeing Susan staring at her, Isabella quickly said, "I swear I didn't mean to eavesdrop on their conversation. It was really a coincidence!"

"I know. Just tell me what you heard!" Susan asked eagerly.

Isabella then said, "I heard Maria asking George if he would come home for dinner tonight. George probably said no, so Maria asked him to take care of himself and if he needed her to bring a change of clothes to the office. George seemed to say no again, and then Maria started to cry, saying she hadn't seen George for over a week and missed him a lot, asking him to come home when he had time. She also said she would stay home and wait for him."

Hearing this, Susan was stunned!

Although she had anticipated that George might not be very enthusiastic about Maria after their marriage, she didn't expect him to not come home for so many days, and Maria had to beg him to come back. They were newlyweds, after all.

Susan couldn't bear to think about it.

Isabella continued, "You have no idea how pitiful Maria looked. After hanging up, she cried. I guess George didn't agree to come home. Then I quickly left to avoid the awkwardness of her seeing me. I don't know when Maria left."

"George is being cruel. I have to go talk to him!" Susan exclaimed, jumping to her feet.

Maria was a very honest and straightforward girl, and Susan really sympathized with her. They had just gotten married, and there was a long time ahead. How could she endure this?

Seeing Susan about to go find George, Isabella quickly stopped her and pushed her back into her seat. "Don't make things worse, okay? It's better if you don't go. If you go, it might not help and could end up making Maria hate you!"

"I'm doing it out of kindness," Susan said.

"I know you're kind, but sometimes kindness doesn't lead to good results. Don't you know that?" Isabella frowned.
